Vernon Elliott was born in London, England in 1912, to a musical family. At a young age Vernon learned the bassoon, which would dominate his scores in later for Smallfilms productions. Beside being a founder member of the Philharmina Orchestra, he was also a regular player at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, a music teacher and writer. As an ardent fan of jazz, he would perform this form of music in his spare time.
His long-time association with Oliver Postgate and Peter Firman of Smallfilms came via a meeting with the Musical Director of Associated Rediffusion Television, Steve Race. He was asked to help Oliver Postgate write a theme to a new series he was developing, Ivor The Engine.
After completing the work on Ivor The Engine, Vernon Elliott would also compose for Noggin The Nog, The Clangers, The Pogle's, The Pingwings and The Seal Of Neptune.
His scores and themes for The Clangers, The Pogle's and Bagpuss would be released many years after his death by Trunk Records in the mid-2000's.- Director
