Leichhardt Expedition from Moreton Bay to Port Essington, 1844-1845

This map show's Leichhardt's route from Moreton Bay to Port Essington. Each marker represents a camp site. Clicking on a marker will show the date of the camp and name (if known), and the associated text from Leichhardt's expedition journal will be displayed to the right of the map. Clicking the 'Next' or 'Prev' button (at the end of each journal entry) will take you to the next or previous day's journal entry respectively.

The map is a Google Map and can be zoomed by using the map's zoom facilities (i.e. the slider, '+' and '-' symbols on the left of the map) or using the scroll wheel on your mouse.

At the base of each journal entry is a list of other relevant journal entries for that day. These entries are from the journals of other expedition members or Glen McLaren's 'Retracing Leichhardt' field notes. Clicking on the journal title will show the entry in the right hand side of the page, replacing the entry already there. Clicking on the 'Compare' link to the right of the journal title will show the associated journal's entry on the left-hand side of the screen, replacing the map. This allows two entries to be compared side by side. Note that some journal entries will cover multiple days, so carefully read the texts when dates at the top of each entry do not match exactly.

This map has been created by the National Centre of Biography, Australian National University.
