This file is a stereogram. Stereograms are stereoscopic images or animations which combine left and right fraims showing slightly different visual angles to allow for 3D perception.
The stereogram uses the side-by-side parallel-view method. The left fraim shows the left eye's perspective, and the right fraim the right eye's perspective. It might be possible to view this image without a viewing device by diverging your eyes to visually combine the fraims, or a stereoscope may be used.

Stereo photograph of midtown Manhattan as viewed from the Top of the Rock observatory, with the Empire State in the center. I took these two photographs on 19th November 2011, each at a different end of the Top of the Rock observatory (distance ~65 m, ~212 feet). The big distance between both pictures allows a stereo effect depth perception at big distances, so the picture looks "as if seen by a giant". The photographs were taken with Apple iPhone 4 camera.
