Summary

Description BR Riddles Standard Class "8P" 4-6-2 No.71000 "Duke of Gloucester" hammering across the Somerset Levels on the Bristol Temple Meads - Paignton "Torbay Express" 08/10. The Standard Class "8P" was the most economical simple-expansion engine ever built with a maximum steam consumption of 12.2lbs per ihp/hr. Only the French Chapelon compound-expansion Class 240P 4-8-0 and 141P 2-8-2 classes were more efficient (with 11.4lbs and 11.2lbs respectively) but these were complex, high maintenance machines. Probably the most economical German design was the compound Class "04" 4-6-2 at 12.6 lbs (also complex and maintenance intensive) and the most economical American loco was the Pennsylvania RR Class "T1" 4-4-4-4 Duplexi at 13.4 lbs (controversial and tempramental machines).
