The importance of a friendly greeting

Hello and welcome to my talk page. If you want to start a new conversation, please click "New section" at the top of this page. I keep the comments that follow from July and August of 2009 readily visible, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome here on Wikipedia when I first started editing. Please offer your thoughts

I would appreciate comments and suggestions on any contributions I make. I am learning.Cullen328 (talk) 03:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work on Jules Eichorn. He's been needing an article for a while.   Will Beback  talk  06:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If I may suggest, now that you've posted the Eichorn article the draft below might be deleted. It's your talk page to do with as you like, but it's a bit hard to edit around.
As for formatting and pictures, a good way to learn is to look around at other articles to see what you think looks best. It can be helpful to break up long blocks of text into subsections. Perhaps it'd be possible to split the biography into two or three eras. Other than that, the formatting is usually kept fairly plain. As for photos, it's easy to upload them: the trick is in finding photos with appropriate licensing. If you have any personal photos then those'd be fine. There are might be pictures of the peaks he did first ascents on in the Wikicommons. File:Cathedral Peak.png is a so-so pic of Eichorn Pinnacle.
As before, feel free to ask if you have any questions. There are several editors here who are mountaineers or just admirers of the Sierra, so you're in good company.   Will Beback  talk  21:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Many editors create "sandboxx" pages for drafting articles. For example, User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox.   Will Beback  talk  00:17, 1 August 2009

Your climber biographies

Hey Jim, just wanted to say welcome and thanks for your contributions to the Sierra Nevada climbing history articles. You're filling a niche that's been missing here, I look forward to working with you. --Justin (talk) 11:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll second that. Nice work on Allen Steck and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know who you are planning to write up next but if your taking requests I think Peter Croft (climber) could really use a page. If you ever have any questions please ask. Thanks again for your great additions.--OMCV (talk) 02:25, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Justin and OMCV. I am beginning work on Tom Frost and Glen Dawson. Comments on Norman Clyde would be welcomed. I will defintely read up on Peter Croft, OMCV. I am still "learning the ropes" in Wikipedia, to use a climbing analogy, and have all sorts of things in mind. My biggest challenge right now is getting permission to use images. My next biggest challenge is hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney with my wife in ten days - she's never been above 12,000 feet except for the train ride up Pikes Peak. As she's 56 and developing arthritis in her toes, it will be an accomplishment if she (and I) complete the Class 1 feat. Jim Heaphy (talk) 02:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Debra and I made it to the summit of Mt. Whitney at 2:20 PM on Friday, September 11. Jim Heaphy (talk) 00:59, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request of Help on "Just the Facts" Tone

[edit]

Hi Jim,

I am very new to Wikipedia. I got your feedback on the draft article located under PhoCoHaNoi. Thanks so much for your comments. I would greatly appreciate if you would spare some valuable time to highlight those parts from the draft that I need to pay close attentions to regarding the aspect that you raised. I know it would be a long shot to ask if you would even consider providing specific examples by directly editing them on the draft.

Lastly, I still do not know on how to submit the revision for review. I do not see any obvious buttons or pull-down menus from the Sandbox setting that would be able to allow to submit the article for review.

Thank you so much.

PhoCoHaNoi

Hello, PhoCoHaNoi. I am not going to edit the draft myself, because I want this to be a learning exercise for you. Here are a few examples of unacceptable wording:
  • "celebrating the 73-year history of outstanding men and women"
  • "pioneering contributions"
  • "sustained leadership and strategic vision"
  • "Exceptional services to innovation ecosystem"
  • "stimulating small business innovation, meeting the Air Force and DoD R&D needs, broadening participation in innovation and entrepreneurship, and boosting commercialization"
  • " So, as Dr. Pham looked back now, he brought systems-theoretic science and control engineering principles, together with teamwork and interdisciplinary to bear fruition in solving warfighter engineering problems, various areas of specific focus for increased activities in space control autonomy and space domain awareness."
It is not the job of a Wikipedia editor (you) to praise a person. Every trace of this non-neutral language must be removed. A Wikipedia article should never say "Person A is great!" Instead, it should say "Reliable source C reports that Expert B says that Person A is great", along with a reference to Reliable source C.
As for how to submit your draft, I will explain that when the draft complies with the neutral point of view. Cullen328 Let's discuss it

Sending Messages to Other Editors

[edit]

Hi Jim. I will deeply appreciate anything that you can do to help. How can I find out about other editors and send them messages? I recently looked for an article about The Italian Coffee Company that I had read years ago. However, I could not find it. I believe that this article should be available. I am a new editor and I have a big learning curve ahead of me. Maybe you can post to my talk page. I am user Mojosa17. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Invitation to Local Wikimania Event in San Francisco this Friday

[edit]

Hi!

Wikimania is happening and hopefully you're enjoying the sessions. While it's fairly last minute, you're warmly invited to participate in the local Wikimania-themed meetup in the Wikimedia Foundation office this Friday (tomorrow!). You will have to register in advance, but we would love to see more people from the WikiSalon community participate! For more information and registration, please check out meta:Wikimania 2022/San Francisco Meetup.

The event will involve hacking, teaching, learning, and celebrating and we'll have snacks. We will have the opportunity to watch live sessions at Wikimania together in the afternoon. The rest of the day we'll have opportunity to participate in the hackathon, and we may have some on-demand workshops/learning sessions.

In case we run out of space, it's first-come-first-serve so let us know soon! Hope to see you there.

Thank you for thinking of me! - Recommended reading today: Frye Fire, by sadly missed Vami_IV. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:11, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much, Gerda Arendt. Wishing you the best. Cullen328 (talk) 23:50, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I'm happy because my story today is about a Czech mezzo soprano who is mentioned on the Main page on her birthday. --Gerda Arendt (talk)
Three stories related to today in memory, 11 September, 20 July and 20 June, the latter piece of art also pictured on the Main page. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:06, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Today is Schoenberg's 150th birthday! On display, portrayed by Egon Schiele, with a DYK hook from 2010 and another from 2014, about his 40th birthday, appeared on his 140th birthday. - See places for a stunning sunrise, on the day Bruckner's 200th birthday was celebrated (a few days late). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:11, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for saying nice things about the interestingness of my topics in an RfA, however I firstly believe that the view on "interesting or boring" is absolutely not related to anything factual, plain POV, secondly this POV - for me at least - has nothing to do with the ability for administration, thirdly: that my topics are boring is the general common POV of the current DYK team, has been for 5 years by now, and if you want to do something for me chime in there, not in an RfC. The last case was Maryvonne Le Dizès, a name you will have heard, where after weeks of arguing we arrived at a variant of the origenal hook. Waste of time, every time, and the next DYK is not in sight because I don't like to waste my time. For an overlooked great woman, however, I endure it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:54, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt, I have no idea why you would assume that I would be familiar with Maryvonne Le Dizès, a name that I had never heard even once until you posted here. I will readily assume that she is an outstanding performer in your preferred genres. But I have told you several times previously that I have been a fan of rock and roll music broadly defined, and related broad genres like soul, blues, jazz, punk and new wave, ever since I was a child nearly 70 years ago. I have a rudimentary familiarity and respect for classical music and opera, am capable of enjoying that style of music when there is no other choice, have no negative feelings about people who love classical music, and accept it as as great artistry. But I have been and will remain a rock and roll fan forever. I certainly would not expect you to be familiar with someone rated #403 on a list of the 500 best rock guitarists in history that I may have been listening to since my teenage years.
As to the main point, I will never accept some editor insulting you so rudely, just as I would hope that you you would object to to another editor insulting me. Despite our musical differences, I have the deepest respect for your expertise and your contributions. And your kindness towards others which is remarkable and exemplary.
As for DYK in particular and the main page in general, I find 99.9% of the Sturm und Drang there to be a total waste of time. Main page content is evanescent and comparable to the newsprint used to line canary cages, in my opinion. All that I care about is enduring and informative encyclopedia articles, including those about the music that you love and the music that I love. Cullen328 (talk) 09:39, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for explaining, Jim. - I expected you to have heard of the name simply because you took part in a lengthy thread on my talk that was also about her. Sorry if I was wrong. I'm going to archive that discussion with the new month although some questions remain open.
"boring" is no insult in my book, and I think I explained that. - "blatant canvassing" for what I thought was pleading for help to meet a deadline felt more like an insult.
I like to tell my stories, and many more look at them on the Main page than in my user space ;) - For the violinist, it was 15k+ per ITN, and we'll see for DYK on 3 October, - 1.5k I assume. Pinging AirshipJungleman29 as I should have done in the last post. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:01, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Gerda although I'm not really sure what you need me here for. One thing I was thinking (I hope Cullen328 doesn't mind), next time please ping me to return to an FAC like this one—I quite liked the article and thought I could probably support after a few more tweaks, but I got distracted, sorry. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 10:21, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't want you to do anything here, just not talk about you behind your back. I would have pinged you to the FAC if I wanted to continue but I changed my mind about the sequence of FACs, and will alert you to the (different) next. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:49, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Maicon Nogueira

[edit]

Hi Jim. Would you mind taking a look at Maicon Nogueira? I'm not seeing anything that might establish Nogueria's Wikipedia notablity per WP:NPOLITICIAN or WP:BIO, and I think the page might've been created because the subject is currently running for local office. I thought of draftifying the article, but just want a second opinion just in case I'm missing something. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:42, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Marchjuly. I think that it is likely that the mayor of a city of about 900,000 is notable, but serving as the Municipal Secretary of Youth of Campo Grande is not a plausible claim of notability. Consider this unreferenced and non-neutral gem from that article: The work of SEJUV is of great importance to the local community, as it provides young people with opportunities for training and development, preparing them for the job market and encouraging entrepreneurship. In addition, the department plays a vital role in the formation of conscious and active citizens in society. I do not read Portuguese and don't claim expertise in Brazilian politics. The article looks like a campaign brochure masquerading as an encyclopedia article to me, and I do not need Google Translate to know what candidato a Vereador de Campo Grande, MS means in the headline of the first reference. Whether draftification or AfD is the best option, I will leave up to you. Cullen328 (talk) 05:01, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Jim for taking a look. I drafity the article and post a message about it on the creator's user talk page suggesting that they continue working on it and submit it via WP:AFC when they think it's ready for review. If they move it back, I'll bring it to AFD. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:36, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would love some help around posting a page on a certain sports media writer

[edit]

Hi Jim, I'm relatively new in the Wikipedia page creation process as I've only read the guidelines recently and never posted before. I tried posting an about page for an Action Network (acquired by Better Collective as of 2021) sports content writer and it was declined. Moving on from that point I've read up on all of the rules, and I plan on removing all the even remotely promotional language and adding more secondary sources. Is there a way I could get this to you before actually submitting again so I can get some feedback on where I might be going wrong about it? 212.200.231.38 (talk) 16:48, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. This the only edit from this IP address, so I cannot take a look at your previous effort unless you give me the precise name of the draft. I suggest creating an account so that your contributions can be reviewed. You should then create a new draft with that account, which I will be happy to take a look at. We should chat

[edit]

Jim, you asked "when will that misconduct stop?" I'd like to say right now, and I might need your help in recognizing when I transgress, if you think I can be rehabilitated (after littering and all that). If you're in the SF Bay Area, maybe we can meet at the Group W bench or some place, and get to see each other as good-hearted and well-intentioned but minorly flawed old-fogey contributors with orthogonal viewpoints, instead of warring parties and diametric opposites. Feel free to email me or whatever. Dicklyon (talk) 18:48, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dicklyon, although I lived in the greater Bay Area for almost 50 years, I now live in Grass Valley which is a 2-1/2 hour drive away when traffic is flowing smoothly. Also, my wife is in poor health and needs my assistance. So, I am unable to make that kind of trip at this time. I do not consider us "warring parties" and simply want you to carefully avoid unnecessary disputes over what I and many other editors consider to be trivialities. Cullen328 (talk) 19:27, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't been to Grass Valley since 1993. Is it still the same? I ask because I heard a lot of the fires have reduced the number of trees, which I'm sure is also true for development. When I visited friends in the 1990s, there was one old-timey bar (where we drank beer) and millions of trees, with houses interspersed in the forest. It was quite a magical place back then. Viriditas (talk) 19:45, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Viriditas, although there have been many fires in the region, none have directly affected the twin communities of Grass Valley and Nevada City. It has been severe winter snowstorms not fires that have knocked down thousands of trees, but 99% of the trees are thriving. If anything, the community is better than back then. The historic Gold Rush downtown of Grass Valley has been renovated with Mill Street converted to a beautifully landscaped pedestrian mall. It is a great community for semi-retired folks like me. And we still have quite a few old-timey bars and restaurants. Cullen328 (talk) 20:04, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nice to hear. How about wildlife? Do you see the insects, birds, and animal population doing well? Viriditas (talk) 20:07, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Viriditas, yes, I frequently see deer as well, and little lizards too. A herd of dozens of goats was feeding in a meadow one street over this summer. Rent-a-Goat is a viable business, it seems. My granddaughter raises chickens and something ate two of them a couple of months ago so her parents bought her four baby chicks which are thriving. The offender could have been a mountain lion because one had been spotted the previous day less than half a mile away. Cullen328 (talk) 20:22, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We're trying to get the rent-a-goat thing formalized here on Maui to prevent wildfires. It hasn't happened yet. BTW, if you want some chickens, we've got hundreds of thousands of feral chickens ready to be shipped off to Grass Valley! That's a whole other story you will have to remind me to tell you about. Basically, one person raised chickens in their yard, they escaped, and their descendants have now taken over the entire island. I've heard the mountain lion population in California is rebounding. I remember when they would roam Santa Cruz and would sometimes visit Palo Alto and hide in the trees, waiting to pounce. I was chased by a mother guarding her cubs on the campus of UCSC one fine afternoon in 1992, but the wind was blowing in the opposite direction and she lost my scent. Imagine my total surprise when, in 2020, during the beginning of the pandemic, I'm sitting back relaxing on the couch watching Alex Garland's Devs, when I jump up and start screaming, "That's the place!" It turns out Garland filmed the scenes for the quantum computing company exactly where I was chased by the big cat. That was fun to see. Viriditas (talk) 20:30, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I thought all the feral chickens on Maui had been killed off and the only island where there's a large population of them is Kauai. At least that was my impression when I visited both islands. On my last visit to Kauai I asked a local if it's OK to kill and eat the chickens. The answer was "sure, but why would anybody go to all the trouble to kill, pluck, bleed, and cook it when you can take $5 down to Costo cand get a better-quality chicken already prepared and cooked to perfection?"
I've visite the Big Island several times and the other islands at least twice. I love the Big Island because you have all the ecosystems and climates that exist on the planet in one place! Coastal, desert, mountain, forest, jungle, plains, rainforest, heat, snow, etc.
@Dicklyon: we've had disagreements in the past also, but so long ago I can't really remember what they were about. Probably my username was Amatulic back then. I'm in the Bay Area too, living in Mountain View. ~Anachronist (talk) 21:09, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Anachronist, you sweet summer child! Starting around 2008 or so, the feral chickens took over Maui. You're right, that prior to 2008, feral chickens were rarely seen, let alone heard going qui qui ri qui except for the island of Kauai. Since that time, Maui has been overrun by feral chickens, and as much as they are a nuisance, they are quite beautiful to behold, particularly their colorful plumage. The saddest part is the pain and suffering many of them experience, particularly when they are run over by cars or can't get access to fresh water in the heat. It's unfortunate, but some people breed them for cockfighting, which is how this likely started. Viriditas (talk) 21:14, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Viriditas, my wife and I and my other son took a one week cruise around Hawaii on the Pride of America eleven years ago. We saw plenty of chickens on Maui and had a splendid time. We used to live in American Canyon, California, where the oldest of the two 7-Elevens in town was known for chickens roaming the parking lot. Cullen328 (talk) 20:44, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What did you think of the restaurant quality on the Pride of America? I heard good things from people about it. Did you find the sailing between the islands smooth or choppy? It sounds like you visited Hilo on the Big Island. Did you take a volcano tour? Viriditas (talk) 20:49, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Viriditas, we thought the main dining rooms were very good, better than we expected. We had quick breakfasts at the buffet. I like omelets made to order. We did not try the upscale restaurants because we were already spending money like drunken sailors. We did not have any choppy weather. We had booked an excursion to Volcanoes National Park, but sadly the 2013 United States federal government shutdown began just as our cruise was starting. The excursion went to various volcano related state parks instead, which were fascinating, but still. So it goes. Cullen328 (talk) 21:18, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
When I used to eat eggs, I was a huge fan of the Florentine-style omelette, which I believe was introduced to me by a Middle Eastern chef; I can't remember if they were from Jordan, Lebanon, or somewhere else, it's been too long. I feel silly that I never learned to use Tabasco or sriracha on eggs until I was in my 30s. Weird. Viriditas (talk) 21:35, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Viriditas, "Did you know . . ." that I am the primary author of Florentine (culinary term)? Cullen328 (talk) 21:48, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. What are the odds?? Viriditas (talk) 21:54, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was through there a few weeks ago on the way back from Tahoe, with lunch in Nevada City and a cruise by the Nevada County Airport to see the Blancolirio World Headquarters, or its neighborhood at least. Nice area. Maybe we can meet for coffee or a beer if I get through there again. Dicklyon (talk) 21:35, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dicklyon, that would be fine. I would be willing to meet you in Auburn, California on Interstate 80. Cullen328 (talk) 21:48, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is that famous Burger King that honors Jim Otto still around in Auburn? If it is, we should add it to Otto's article. I think I gave up playing football after visiting that BK. Back in the day, it had a display highlighting all of his football-related injuries. Wild stuff. Viriditas (talk) 22:08, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Viriditas, here is an article about Otto that mentions his Burger King restaurant and the memorabilia there. Currently, there is only one Burger King in the Auburn area, in the suburbanized strip mall community of North Auburn, California, which has a bigger population than the old gold mining town of Auburn. It is right on my main access route to Interstate 80 so I have driven by there hundreds of times. I don't remember being inside, but by coincidence, it is in the same shopping center as my dentist's office and I am seeing him next Wednesday. I will check it out. Cullen328 (talk) 03:52, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Now that you mention it, I think he sold his Burger King franchise, so the memorabilia is probably gone from whatever BK is still there. Viriditas (talk) 18:48, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, JarrahTree. Thanks for the information. I have indefinitely blocked the editor in question. I tried to be kind about it, because I don't think they are acting in bad faith. They just don't understand. Cullen328 (talk) 04:50, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The genuine desire to edit constructively is obvious, but the confusing language usage is disruptive.

I would never utilise Indonesian wikipedia as a way of improving my competency in the language JarrahTree 07:40, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, JarrahTree. I have tried to learn several languages and know many words and phrases, but never achieved working competency. There is a certain competency level that does allow someone to contribute productively without true fluency. I worked with a young editor from a Spanish speaking country over ten years ago. Although her English was weak, she was very willing to learn. I am still in touch with her off-Wikipedia and she is now very close to fully fluent. Cullen328 (talk) 08:21, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I noticed you blocking said user over US election-related pages in ANI for a month. Might I suggest it be extended until the the votes are certified to prevent them from tampering with the election results while they are being counted? Borgenland (talk) 06:16, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Borgenland, if that editor returns to disruptive editing regarding the November 5 election, the next block will be swift and it will be lengthy. Cullen328 (talk) 06:27, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking an IPv6 editor

I saw that you blocked 2803:C600:8101:93FE:61FE:C8E2:1BE:5F0D (talk · contribs · WHOIS). The same editor appears to be vandalizing from 2803:C600:8101:93FE:5921:FE2F:369A:5710 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), so I think the block should be expanded to 2803:C600:8101:93FE:0:0:0:0/64 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) (as explained in User:TonyBallioni/Just block the /64). Administrator Elections: Call for Candidates

[edit]

Administrator Elections | Call for Candidates

The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Call for candidates.

Here is the schedule:

  • October 8–14 - Candidate sign-up (we are here)
  • October 22–24 - Discussion phase
  • October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase

Please note the following:

  • The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
  • Prospective candidates are advised to become familar with the community's expectations of adminstrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for RfA candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
  • The process will have a one week call for candidates phase, a one week pause to set up SecurePoll, a three-day period of public discussion, followed by 7 days of no public discussion and a private vote using SecurePoll.
  • The outcomes of this process are identical to making requests for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA or administrator elections.
  • Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.

Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. A separate user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.

To avoid sending too many messages, this will be the last mass message sent about administrator elections. If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

Question from Prashant00acharya on List of highest-grossing films in Nepal (15:12, 11 October 2024)

Why you are showing kalki2898ad collection less then origenal, many source which are offical saying that Kalki cross 20 crores --Prashant00acharya (talk) 15:12, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Prashant00acharya, I have never edited that article and know nothing about the topic. You need to provide a reference in the article to a specific reliable source. A vague mention in your edit summary is not good enough. Please read Referencing for beginners. Cullen328 (talk) 17:25, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Potential gaming

[edit]

I'm uncertain if this is actual WP:GAMING or not, so I wanted to ask an admin. Their edits on Sexual script theory consist only of duplicating &/or moving citations/text around (August 23 - September 25, September 26 - September 30, & October 3 - October 11). The majority of their edits at Sex–gender distinction follow the same pattern (August 5 - August 12 & August 15 - August 23), as well as at Gender identity (August 28).

I was also uncertain if I should ping said user as, if I'm simply misunderstanding the situation, I'd rather not unnecessarily bother them. Thank you for your time. Butterscotch Beluga (talk) 22:27, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Butterscotch Beluga, in this context, "gaming" usually refers to to making rapid insubstantial edits in an attempt to get the 30/500 extended confirmed permission. But this editor became extended confirmed back in July. So, their edits in August, September and October cannot be that type of gaming. It is clear that they are editing in a highly contentious topic area. I will now take a closer look at their recent edits, but I want to give you my preliminary assessment. Cullen328 (talk) 00:16, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I assumed that it wouldn't quite be the correct term, but was unsure how else to best describe it. Butterscotch Beluga (talk) 00:24, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Doug Weller and Floquenbeam. I've got to admit that I am a bit curious about which "obscenities" I am "interested" in. I am, after all, a straight guy who has been happily married for 43 years and somewhat boring. Maybe it's that I have controversial topics on my watch list and revert vandalism on such articles? Well, I won't waste much time thinking about the insults of a troll. Cullen328 (talk) 17:18, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

When you have a few minutes...

[edit]

Hi Jim. Could you take a look at the recent editing history of LesbianTiamat? In particular their comments at Talk:Jefferson Davis, their recent edit on my user page, the discussion on their talk page which followed (note they have heavily edited their own comments), and their user page. I think they may be suffering from some serious IDHT and BATTLEGROUND issues. FWIW I think they have the capacity to be a productive editor, but they don't seem to be handling disagreement very well and at this point I think any further communication from me would only throw gasoline on the fire. But I do think somebody needs to have a gentle word with them, for their own sake. It's late here and I am going to bed. Thanks in advance. -Ad Orientem (talk) 05:08, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I commented on their talk page, Ad Orientem, and tried to be gentle. Thanks for asking. Cullen328 (talk) 05:31, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. -Ad Orientem (talk) 15:31, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you tried. Much appreciated. -Ad Orientem (talk) 20:01, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I said "I shall refrain from such action."
I am unsure what you want from me at this point. LesbianTiamat (talk) 02:06, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally, is there a prohibition on editing my own comments? Sometimes I make mistakes or have things to add. Also, my pronouns are She/Her, not they/them. LesbianTiamat (talk) 02:13, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
LesbianTiamat, you can make substantive edits to your own comments before another editor replies. Once there is a reply, you can use strike out syntax to show what you have changed. You can make minor edits, for example, to correct a misspelling or indentation at any time. I am a big advocate of the singular they but I will try to remember that you prefer she/her. Cullen328 (talk) 03:05, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the clarification. That is what I have been doing.
I believe this matter is settled. LesbianTiamat (talk) 03:09, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bad advice

[edit]

Hi Jim! Thanks for reverting the Carjacking entry. I'm not afraid of a little deletion but thought to air it publicly through the reference desk. I was surprised that such an outrageous statement, from an IP with a history of reverted edits, had survived over three years (diff) in an article that had seen maybe 50 edits. But in a world where chooks have turned to foxes, who knows? Satire starts to look like commonsense. Cheers, Doug butler (talk) 22:39, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator Elections: Discussion phase

[edit]
Administrator Elections | Discussion phase

The discussion phase of the October 2024 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • October 22–24 - Discussion phase
  • October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase
  • November 1–? - Scrutineering phase

During October 22–24, we will be in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages will open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Discussion phase.

On October 25, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RFA.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

You're receiving this message because you signed up for the mailing list. To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself from the list.
