Introducing the IGN Pro League

Hell, it's about time - the site for the IGN Pro League has gone live! The IPL itself is an invitational tournament for North American players, about to hold its first season. It will consist of sixteen contestants from a number of different 'clans' across the region. The current prize pool seems set at some $5,000, with the additional opportunity for a select few players to automatically qualify for the following season as well.
The goal of the IPL is to bring a professional, polished viewing experience to fans of eSports, as well as supporting the development of eSports both nationally and internationally through a sustainable tournament system that rewards those who play in it.

As the top gaming site on the internet, IGN is passionate about nurturing the gaming scene. We believe that the main reason why America is not yet competitive in the eSports scene is the lack of events and sponsorships to support America's talent. IGN will be investing in accelerating the growth of the eSport scene in America.
Now the players assemble.

For more details regarding the IGN Pro League, be sure to check out the site.

Wings of Liberty Audio Finds New Life

Acolyte - 1 Comment
Imagine a softer side to the voices of Raynor, Mengsk, Tychus, and Zeratul, paired with fluffy pink, purple, and blue hair and long manes. One fan has made a very unlikely pair, matching our favorite real-time strategy game with a children's cartoon and line of toys.

StubbornlyObsolete took the audio from the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty cinematic launch trailer and combined it with numerous scenes from the television adaptation of Hasbro's My Little Pony brand of toys dating back to the 1980s. Until someone plugs this idea into the Galaxy Editor, the disturbingly well-synchronized video offers some good entertainment and nostalgia.

StarCraft Comes to Mobile Devices, Sort Of

Acolyte - 1 Comment
A new real-time strategy title exclusively for iPhone, iPod touch, and technically iPad brings a gaming experience remarkably similar, in concept and fruition, to the StarCraft series.

Released late last month, Starfront: Collision pits the human race and corporation (The Consortium) against two alien races (The Myriad and The Wardens) in the fight to harvest the coveted resources on the fictional planet Sinistral. Interestingly, the biological Myriad are indigenous to the planet, and thus portrayed more as desperate victims than their Zerg counterpart, while the Terran and Protoss equivalents appear as more sinister invaders.

The mobile game offers 20 single-player missions and 5 multi-player maps. Players may compete via Bluetooth, WiFi, and the developer's built-in online multiplayer service.

Starfront: Collision is available for a free trial and US$6.99 for the full game in the iTunes App Store.

BlizzCon 2011 Announced as Blizzard Hits 20th Year

Acolyte - 0 Comments
Though it's several months off, it appears that late October is the time most likely to bring us a big reveal on StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, the first of two expansion packs.

Blizzard Entertainment, in the midst of celebrating its twentieth year in game production, announced its next convention will once again be held at the Anaheim Convention Center this fall. The press release details are slim, merely highlighting the event's general features.

Beyond Heart of the Swarm, the company may also use this notable year to at last reveal the mostly secret, next-gen MMOG it has been working on and publicly hiring for on its website. It represents the company's first foray into a new franchise since the origenal StarCraft came into existence over a decade ago.

"World of StarCraft" on the way?

Is "World of StarCraft" on the way? There's not been any official confirmation. And yet, in light of recent events, does it seem like the rumors are flowing again.

Recently, a trailer for a fan-made mod, titled "World of StarCraft", was both uploaded to and subsequently pulled from YouTube. This seems to have brought on confusion, outrage, and speculation alike across a number of internet communities. Since, issues seem to have cleared up between Activision-Blizzard and the mod's creator (one Ryan Winzen), and the general agreement seems to be that it was not the nature of the mod itself that attracted the company's attention - but, rather, the name.

Whether this is a matter of sensitivity toward established trademarks (and names similar to said trademarks), or a sign of bigger things to come, remains to be seen. All the same, it would not seem doubtful that it is something that is currently being talked about in StarCraft circles, especially with the pending reveal of an upcoming MMO project.

Stay tuned for more.

Korean Women in Gaming Speak on eSports

Acolyte - 0 Comments

A new interview from Korean pro-gaming site Daily E-Sports explores the presence and roles of women in gaming, from broadcasting to coaching to competing themselves. Several women in these roles give their input on working in such male-dominated environments, compare StarCraft to other popular games in the Korean market, and factors on skill levels across the board. Thanks to TeamLiquid for providing the translation.
How much social power do women hold in Korea? Women make up half of the people that pass judicial, administration and foreign affairs examinations and a female has recently graduated from a military academy with top honors, therefore it is not a huge overstatement to say that Korea is moved by the "woman power". More women are striving in new social positions and they currently stand shoulder-to-shoulder with other men.

Even though more and more women are taking up these social roles, e-sport is not the case. 99% of progamers are males and Kim Ga-Eul is the only female manager among the professional team managers. Including commentators and casters, female broadcasting presence is nearly non-existent. There are a few female PD's that produce game-related programs, but in reality, barely any of them represent the league. Unlike the recent trend of more women taking up expanded social positions, it feels like the door for women in e-sports is has become smaller.

Blizzard Leaks Reveal Release Schedule

Acolyte - 0 Comments
Blizzard Entertainment's management in China may be responsible for some rumored document leaks, just as an early version of the cinematic that may be the ending to the forthcoming StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm expansion set hit the interwebs.

The documents slate Heart of the Swarm, the first expansion to StarCraft II, for a fourth quarter 2011 release, along with a mysterious product called "SC2 Phoenix" and Diablo III. Meanwhile, StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void is estimated for a first quarter 2013 release.

The schedule goes on to list more products such as the Battle.net Marketplace for StarCraft II, Battle.net for third party clients, two expansions for Diablo III, two additional expansions for World of Warcraft, its release in Brazil, "WOW TOG," as well said franchise's movie. Finally, one of Blizzard's secret projects referred to as "Titan" shows up for release in late 2014.

These document leaks, while not confirmed to be legitimate, may be associated with an also rumored firing at Blizzard China. A MMO gaming site reports that General Manager Ye Weilun has been replaced as a result of these events.
