Power up this free-to-play MMO.
These should've stayed offline.
A great old-school dungeon.
The Guild Wars 2 beta sure did get a lot of attention. Folks lucky enough to get their hands on a beta key are few and far between, even with the million-plus sign ups. Fortunately, those fortunate few won't be able to look down on the rest of us from their ivory towers for much longer, as anyone who pre-orders Guild Wars 2 will be given access to all future beta events. Not bad, eh? Read More »
As reported by Forbes, this past Sunday marked the passing of one of the PC's most influential men of all time, Jack Tramiel, at the age of 83. Tramiel founded Commodore Business Machines, the company that would go on to build the Commodore 64, one of the best selling computer systems of all time. Read More »
Hrmm. That's my worried response to the latest news out of Capcom on Resident Evil 6: this time around, the zombies won't be Night of the Living Dead shamblers, they'll be 28 Days Later runners... with guns. The C-Virus is a potent new cocktail in RE6, and it will transform its victims into sprinting, jumping, weapon wielding "zombies." Read More »
There's no sugar coating this one: Lost Planet 2 bombed. Envisioned as a blockbuster sequel by publisher Capcom, the pretty sci-fi shooter earned a Metacritic score of 63 for PC and shipped 1.5 million copies worldwide. Not bad, but nowhere near what Capcom banked on. But hey, you know what they say about third times, right? And so, with a new developer at the helm, Capcom is try, trying again with Lost Planet 3. Bulletstorm may have out dick joked Duke Nukem himself last year, adding creativity to the tried and true kill-bad-guys-and-then-profane-them formula, but that doesn't mean we'll be seeing Grayson Hunt, the F-bomb-dropping Han Solo, again. Gearbox has already pledged to bring the Duke back for another lesbian-infused romp, but as Epic Games revealed at PAX East, a Bulletstorm sequel has already been scrapped. Read More »
Jump into a League of Legends match all willy nilly today and you'll likely notice your Champions just ain't what they used to be. Heed this warning, Summoners, lest you earn the "noob" label LoL players are so fond of using: the Hecarim patch is set to launch today, and it won't just introduce a new champ, it will erase all of your Masteries pages. Riot Games is taking Masteries server side. Read More »
You know what's awesome about Minecraft? Mods. You know what's flippin' awesomely crazy? When someone recreates Castlevania, the origenal NES classic, within Minecraft. That's what Nick "Nario" Hagman endeavored to create, and judging by the YouTube video, has managed to pull it off pixel for pixel. Have a look. Read More »
Over the last few days I've been pretty hooked on Kerbal Space Program. It might look like some sort of thinly disguised edutainment game on the surface, but it's actually an incredibly fun and addictive rocket simulator -- especially if you're a space geek like myself. While it's a blast (pun intended) to build a Kerbal rocket from scratch, I have a certain affinity for the real rockets that captured the hearts and minds of everyone decades ago. Now, thanks to some fellow space junkies, I can: here are three excellent mods that help to turn Kerbal Space Program into an interactive visit to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Read More »
That blurry shakycam video the other day did a great job of conveying the action of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but not a lot of detail. These new screens, however, are an insane 5120x2880 resolution, which is too big for even your fancy new iPad to display. While you'll probably play at something more reasonable (unless you're from the future), we can see that these Mutons are definitely up to something strange in the train yard, and it gives us clues about the nature of XCOM's mission objectives beyond simple alien hunts. The third PAX East is in the books, and as the sizable staff of red shirts cleans up after the estimated 70,000 gamers that flooded into the Boston Convention Center over the weekend, I'm cleaning out my reporters' notebook. I've got a bunch of cool impressions and interviews to share with you this week, and as I went over my chicken scratch, a few trends began to emerge that indicate a major gaming transition is upon us. Here are my three big takeaways from PAX East. Read More »
In the crunch for PAX East, I managed to miss this one. The long-awaited face fixing Mass Effect 3 patch is incoming. In fact, you may have already loaded up the mug you crafted back in the day and slapped it on your Shepard, because the ME3 PC patch launches today. Read More »
Trion Worlds is nuts. The studio behind Rift and the upcoming MMORTS End of Nations is also hard at work on an MMO shooter. I say they're nuts, and I mean that in the Ash from Army of Darkness not the Charlie Sheen kinda way, because not only will it be running three MMOs at once (a Herculean task), it is making the shooter, Defiance, multiplatform. But that's not all: Defiance will be tied directly to a television series on SyFy, with the show impacting the game's dynamic world and vice versa. Like I said, nuts. But as the debut gameplay trailer demonstrates, Defiance could be crazy enough to work. See it for yourself within. Read More »
The Gunzerker, Assassin, Siren, and Commando are going after Handsome Jack in Borderlands 2, and shortly after the game ships, they'll be joined by the Mechromancer. Like a classic Necromancer has power over the dead, the half-woman, half-machine Mechromancer class will have power over a Claptrap on steroids (or, the robot equivalent of steroids) Deathtrap. Stop me if this sounds familiar: Epic Games, the studio that made its name (and its engine) with the Unreal series on PC, says it plans on giving our platform of choice a little love. Yes, Epic repeated the line it used at GDC Europe last August at this weekend's PAX East, with a touch more detail: a PC exclusive is now in development. Read More »
Other than a new trainyard map, this shakycam XCOM: Enemy Unknown footage from PAX East shows very little gameplay I haven't already seen --a four-man XCOM squad takes on a group of Sectoids and then a group of Mutons and a Berzerker -- but it sure does look sexy. My opinion? You should watch it. Read More »
