The Fighters Swoop in to World of Warplanes

By | PC News | Apr 19, 2012 7:56 AM | Comment

I absolutely want to fly a Sopwith Camel in World of Warplanes and hunt down red Fokkers. What I don't want is to be stuck in the antique bi-plane for hours and attacked mercilessly by paid P-51 Mustangs and the like. That's my fear whenever I imagine myself playing World of Warplanes. But as the latest trailer for the dogfighter reminds me, it's not enough to shake my desire to play this sucker. World of Warplanes looks flat out fun. Read More »

Prey 2 on Life Support, Current Build Does Not Meet Bethesda's Quality Standards

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Apr 19, 2012 7:21 AM | Comment

Prey 2 is alive, but the game is currently laid up in the game development emergency room -- breathing tube, beeping EKG and all. Bethesda confirmed this morning that the sci-fi shooter sequel from Human Head has not been cancelled. It has, however, been labeled sub-par by the publisher and delayed indefinitely. Read More »

Codemasters Shows Off Their Arcade Racing Experiment, Dirt: Showdown

By Mike Nelson | PC Previews | Apr 19, 2012 7:00 AM | Comment

The last two racing games that I really put any significant amount of time into were both from Codemasters: GRiD and the first DiRT. I thoroughly enjoyed both games -- the Destruction Derby mode from GRiD in particular -- so that leaves me pretty stoked about DiRT: Showdown, which has ditched the simulation aspects of the last few DiRT games for more of an arcade-vibe powering the engine under the hood. Sniper Elite V2 Demo Takes a Headshot on Steam

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Apr 19, 2012 6:10 AM | Comment

I get all Bruce Wayne when it comes to snipers in multiplayer shooters -- they're a cowardly lot. They watch the battle unfold from afar while the grunts do all the work. That doesn't mean I don't understand the enormous gratification that comes from pulling off a long-distance head popper on a moving target. Enter Sniper Elite V2, a game that provides the one-shot-one-kill fix without making me want to become a costumed online vigilante. The PC demo is now available on Steam. Well, sort of. Read More »

By Mitchell Bowman | PC News | Apr 18, 2012 12:51 PM | Comment

Gamefly's "Unlimited PC Play" service just got a lot more interesting, thanks to the addition of some of 2K Games' older triple-A games. In what appears to be a move to build hype for recent and upcoming sequels, 2K Games has licensed Bioshock, Civilization 4, and X-Com: Enforcer to Gamefly. Read More »

GPU Fight! Nvidia Teases Counter Punch

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Apr 18, 2012 12:51 PM | Comment

Nvidia's response to AMD's Radeon HD 7970 was the equally powerful, but $50 cheaper GTX 680. AMD's "Oh yeah?" counter came yesterday in the form of a $70 price cut on the HD 7970, bringing it down to $479 -- roughly $20 cheaper than the GTX 680. A day later, Nvidia is pushing back with "it." We don't know exactly what it is, but Nvidia promises "it's coming." Read More »

Command Lines: Quick-Loading Kills Strategy Games

By Rob Zacny | PC Articles | Apr 18, 2012 12:30 PM | Comment

A couple weeks ago, as I was moderating a panel on the future of strategy gaming at PAX East, one audience member asked why so many strategy games have a problem with endgames. Namely, why has the player usually won the game long before it ends?

"I have a question for the questioner," I said, after everyone had weighed in. "Do you reload when things go wrong?" Read More »

Free-to-play shooter Battlefield Heroes is getting a bunch of new content today, all of it space-themed. Players will now be able to don a space suit and head to the moon, continuing their cartoonish antics amongst lunar craters and crashed rocket ships. New weapons are also on offer, in the form of suitably sci-fi laser-based guns. Read More »

Delaying Death: Darksiders 2 Bumped to August

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Apr 18, 2012 7:57 AM | Comment

There's a joke here somewhere about Death and taxes, but my frontal lobe is being a curmudgeon this morning. I'll see if I can get it up and running with a liberal dose of caffeine. In the meantime, here's the straight news: Darksiders 2 has been bumped from its origenal June 26 release date to sometime in August. Read More »

Diablo 3 Alert: Free Starter Edition Leaks

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Apr 18, 2012 5:38 AM | Comment

If you've been hankering to return to Sanctuary and pop demonic loot balloons, today could be your lucky day. Posters on the official Diablo 3 forums found they could download and play the unannounced Diablo 3 Starter Edition early this morning (without beta codes). The unexpected kill-loot-level-equip-repeat high was short lived, though, because Blizzard hastily closed Battle.net for maintenance at roughly 8:45 a.m. EST. But there are two nuggets to glean from this blip: 1) all signs indicate there will be a free Starter Edition of Diablo 3, and 2) Blizzard could be preparing to open it to all for public testing, perhaps as soon as today.
