Melbourne is a great guy's city because it has tons of world-class appeal with very little pretense. It's a snapshot of modern urbanity and sophistication, but without the accompanying cultural baggage of a European capital or the aggression of  Sydney. Check out the "laneways" or old covered commercial arcades for great food and endless options for shopping and people watching. This being Australia, there are plenty of opportunities to party and the nightlife vibe is generally laid-back, even if the venue is design-y and expensive.
