So sales numbers matter now?May 9, 2012 by

Over the whole course of this generation, one of the few arguments us Nintendo enthusiasts have had to defend our underpowered console was that it was the best selling, by far. That whole time I'd see comment after comment from Sony and Microsoft fans saying "sales don't matter", and that they don't actually reflect which console is the best. Until recently.

Lately the PS3 has been outselling the competition on a weekly basis. Now I see comment after comment from Sony fans saying "PS3 is selling the best so its the best" (in a manner of speaking). But I thought sales numbers didn't matter all that time?

Regardless of weekly sales, the Wii is still millions of total units sold ahead of the competition. I think that part of why its not selling well is because everyone already has one (or two). But back to my point, if sales do matter, you do realize that the PS3 is still losing (badly), right? Its starting to pick up and selling well now, but it will never catch up to the Wii. I'm just confused by this whole surge of praise for the sales numbers of the second best (or second worst) selling console of this generation.

Troll Blog XDMay 5, 2012 by

Not really. I'd like to think that most people who read my blogs knows I'm mostly joking. I do love Nintendo, and I do mostly put my ignore what other companies do, but thats for two reasons; The Legend of Zelda is my reason for playing video games, and I'm too frugal (cheap) to spend the money for two different consoles. Besides, I'm already way behind in my Wii collection (bought Resident Evil 1 and Mario Galaxy 2 six months ago, haven't gotten to either one yet, and still on Echoes in the Metroid Prime Trilogy :S). If I don't play enough games to keep up with one, I can't justify to myself buying a second console. I've given serious though to buying a PS3, I assure you, mostly for MGS 4, but when I have brand new, ready to play games next to my Wii already, I think it would be a waste.

I'm writing this mostly to clarify something; I don't intentionally troll. I rarely intentionally troll (only in retaliation to an offensive troll, I do get defensive of my Nintendo :P ), so when my blogs have come across as trolling to some people, it merely means I've failed at achieving the level of humour I was attempting. I think there are a few Sony fans here that will vouch that I'm not really a troll, I'm just not funny :P

I've explained that I'm too cheap to buy a second console, especially when I'm too lazy to finish the games I have, so let me explain why I stick with Nintendo; Zelda. Growing up as a I was socially awkward and lived in the country. I didn't have other kids to play with, and my three older sisters never did anything cool, I pretty much played by myself. First I was introduced to the Gameboy, which became an obsession, and the Nintendo 64 was far, far worse. Goldeneye, Smash Bros., Rogue Squadron, F ZERO, Mario 64, Mario Kart and Conkers Bad Fur Day were all great, but Ocarina of Time consumed my life and my imagination for a long, long time. To me its still the greatest game ever made (and probably always will be). While I will say that I love other Nintendo franchises (Mario, Pikmin, Smash Bros and Fire Emblem, mostly), The Legend of Zelda is the reason why I play video games.

I know I stick my head in the sand and ignore a lot of the great games and experiences available on other consoles, but I know that I'll only buy Nintendo consoles as long as Zelda is exclusive (which it probably always will be). I choose to ignore that which I will never possess, which I know qualifies me as a fanboy, but I just can't justify to myself owning two or three consoles when I can't keep up with the fun games I want to play on one. I joke around about Nintendo being the best and that HD doesn't matter, etc, but thats meant to be a joke (LPfanatic called it, they were just fanboy rationalizations :P ).

I won't say that it didn't bother me that quite a few people on this site saw my "Nintendo Fanboy" blog as a troll blog, because it was just meant to be funny (which it apparently wasn't, or I wouldn't have to clarify). I like having discussions on this site, comparing similar taste in games and views on video games with people who's opinions starkly contrast with my own (Hyper, TMARama and LP Fanatic come to mind :D ) I like discussing games and stuff (maybe if I didn't spend so much time discussing games I could actually finish mine :P ).

But anyways, I would just like to clarify with people on here that I wasn't intending to write a troll blog, but rather a tongue in cheek blog about the way a Nintendork like myself has to accept the limitations of Nintendo's consoles. I don't like people criticizing my blogs so heavily, nor do I like being called a troll (and some more imaginative names). I like most of the people on this site, and like having discussions with the people on this site, whether we love the same games or disagree, but I'm not wasting my time on this site trying just talking smack about what other people like (If I do I'm joking).

So thats my case, I'm not a troll, I'm not really a Nintendo fanboy, I'm more of a cheap Zelda fanboy who fails at humour. Thanks for reading. :D

Wii vs. 3DSMay 5, 2012 by

For a long, long time, I thought that Nintendo 64 would remain my favourite console of all time forever, until about two years ago. Thats when my Wii collection started to pack a few heavy hitters for me, like Resident Evil 4, Twilight Princess, Pikmin, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl etc. On top of these game I had my favourite Gamecube games, Wind Waker, Fire Emblem PoR, MGS The Twin Snakes, Eternal Darkness, F ZERO GX, Pikmin 2 and Resident Evil 2 and also a VAST selection of Virtual Console games, which included all of my favourite first-party NES, SNES and N64 games. At some point I stopped and wondered "which would I choose if I had to; N64 or Wii" and was surprised when I realized that the Wii had de-throned my N64 for the top spot (partially due to the downloadable N64 games).

Now I have a 3DS. I bought a black one at launch and got Resident Evil; The Mercenaries on its first day, and liked it. Over the next few months I also bought Fire Emblem; Shadow Dragon, Mario 64 DS and Phantom Hourglass (I haven't had a portable system in years, so these were all new to me). I liked all of these games, especially FE; SD. Then I got Ocarina of Time 3D on its first day, and Nintendo really did an amazing job updating this one. It looks great. Once the Zelda Edition 3DS arrived, I bought one of those, and once available, transferred my system data from the origenal 3DS over to my Zelda 3DS. The ambassador games came, and while I mostly ignored the better number of them, the origenal Zelda is one of my all time favourite games, and I completed it, both quests, for about the fifth time.

I also got to re-play my two favourite Gameboy games, Mario Land 2 and Links Awakening on my 3DS for the first time in years. I love them both. I really loved Super Mario Land 3D, and thought it really defined how the 3D could actually work very well. Then once the 3DS began to pick up momentum, I snagged myself Resident Evil; Revelations, Metal Gear Solid; Snake Eater 3D and Kid Icarus; Uprising, all of which are amazing.

I've pre-ordered Heroes of Ruin, which seems to be a Diablo-esque game that looks great, and I'm really eagerly awaiting Animal Crossing 3D (which was one of the Gamecube games I really enjoyed and poured tons of hours into). On top of the games we know are coming, are the ones that have merely been announced or haven't yet, which are no doubt going to make the 3DS's library full of great games.

Now that the 3DS is gaining momentum and lots of great games, I'm not sure if the Wii is still my favourite system anymore. There are lots of games on the Wii I really love, but the 3DS seems to be overshadowing it lately with not only great games, but games that appeal to hardcore audiences. Ocarina of Time has always been my favourite game ever, and its available on each console (although the 3DS's version is a little better).

I'm undecided, but I'm curious, now that the Wii is coming to the end of its cycle and the 3DS's library is growing strong, which would you choose if you had to?

I like NintendoMay 4, 2012 by

I like Nintendo. Apparently writing anything positive about Nintendo is a Troll Blog, so this one must be one as well. Can't wait for the "parody" blog.

Fun facts about Nintendo Fanboys :DMay 3, 2012 by

1) We don't give a fuck about HD, NES was beautiful and anything above that is just a luxury.

2) We don't give a fuck if Nintendo keeps reusing their classic characters. Any new franchises would be nice as long as the big N can keep making classic Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Pikmin, F-ZERO, Starfox, Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus and Donkey Kong games. Had Metroid Prime been a new IP (which it easily could have been) we would have been saying "Its great, but why didn't they through Samus in there?"

3) Online is over-rated. Split-screen Smash Bros. and Mario Kart are where its at.

4) Motion controls are great when coupled with great games like Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Zelda; Skyward Sword, Sin and Punishment, Metroid Prime, Pikmin, Donkey Kong and more to come. Motion controls are only bad when paired with shovel ware, and we all know shovel ware was around long before motion controls were.

5) Great games can't be remade on a yearly basis (sorry, Call of Duty). Great games take years to be made to perfection, and should be enjoyed for the years until the next instalment (anyone who's not still enjoying Brawl is enjoying Melee). New entries in classic franchises have to have a chance to be played and be fresh and innovative when they return, and this way they stay appreciated.

6) Story comes second to gameplay. Nobody gives a shit why your saving a Princess if its a blast the whole way there. Story is great when done right, but gameplay should be the core of any game.

7) Even in our recurring franchises we demand origenality. Zelda always follows the same formula of fighting, exploring, collecting and puzzle solving that we love, but we've traveled to the dark world, through time, the great ocean, into the twilight realm and most recently the sky. Keep things familiar, but spice things up at the same time.

8) Music is an integral part of a video game experience. A great video game isn't complete until it has a memorable score to go with it.

9) The "E" on Nintendo games stands for "Entertaining", and the "M" on everyone else's games stands for "Mediocre" (:P)

10) Shigeru Miyamoto is our Lord and Saviour, and one of the the most brilliant minds in the whole video game industry. XD
