Rotterdam is known as one of the major seaports in the world. During the Second World War almost the complete centre of the city was destroyed. After the war the city was reconstructed in a modern way, and modern architecture is now one of Rotterdam’s trademarks.
Although the first high rise building in Rotterdam was already built in 1898 (Het Witte Huis), the high-rise boom since 1990 is responsible for the current skyline. In recent years Rotterdam is very successful with the construction of residential towers.
