A Look Back: Chris Kanyon
by Devon Givens Contributor Written on April 03, 2010 According to recent reports, Christopher Klucsaritis, better known by his ring name, Kanyon, has been found dead. He was 40 years old.
His wrestling career started in late 1994 as a jobber in the WWE. After his friend James Mitchell saw potential in him, Kanyon began training with the Fabulous Moolah in South Carolina and Afa in the Wild Samoan wrestling school.
He would also start his career in WCW as a jobber before being repackaged as Mortis, a character based on Reptile and Scorpion. He would start a feud with Glacier and lose at Uncensored. After the match, Wrath debuted and formed a team with Kanyon, which would be quietly dropped in late 1997.
In 1998, he asked Raven if he could join Raven's Flock. He was told he could be a member if he could defeat Diamond Dallas Page for the WCW United States Title. After he failed to defeat him, Raven executed a DDT on the entrance ramp, which would ignite a feud between the two.
Kanyon would later abandon the Mortis persona and adopted a new nickname dubbed by Mike Tenay, "The Innovator of Offense," due to his unique wrestling technique, which included multiple moves executed from a fireman's carry position. He formed an alliance with Saturn, but that was short-lived, as he turned on Saturn and joined the Flock.
The Flock soon disbanded after Saturn defeated Raven at Fall Brawl, and Kanyon would later take time off his career to work as a stunt coordinator and stuntman for The Jesse Ventura Story .
He returned in 1999, and formed a stable with Bam Bam Bigelow and Diamond Dallas Page as the Jersey Triad. They started a feud with Saturn and Chris Benoit, defeating them at the Great American Bash.
The three would later receive a special dispensation by WCW president Ric Flair to defend titles as a three-man unit, otherwise known as the Freebird Rule. The rule would later be overturned by Sting, who was Flair's replacement. They dropped the title at Road Wild to the Harlem Heat on August 14.
The Jersey Triad would soon disband, and Kanyon would take time off once again to begin work for the WCW-produced film, Ready to Rumble . He served as a stunt coordinator and the stuntman for Oliver Platt.
Kanyon returned in late 1999 and was repackaged as Chris "Champagne" Kanyon, who would be accompanied by J. Biggs, his "agent," and two former Nitro Girls, Baby and Chameleon. He claimed that he had been accustomed to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, and began to indulge in luxuries such as champagne, women, and very expensive cars. The character would soon be removed by then-WCW booker, Kevin Sullivan.
Kanyon worked as scout for WCW and hired Jimmy Wang Yang and AJ Styles
from WWA4 who set up a special show for Kanyon to scout them. Kanyon
thought they were awesome and recommended them to WCW and they were immediately hired.
Kanyon returned to the ring in April 2000, when Vince Russo replaced Kevin Sullivan. He teamed with Page again, although the partnership would soon come to a close when Mike Awesome threw Kanyon off the Triple Cage onto the entrance ramp at Slamboree.
Kanyon would soon turn on Page at the Great American Bash, costing him his Ambulance against Mike Awesome. He would soon side with the New Blood faction and began to imitate Page, changing his ring name to "Positively Kanyon", and began wearing a long blonde wig. He also began using the Diamond Cutter, and dubbed it the "Kanyon Kutter."
He would start a tirade in WCW, delivering the Kutter to various backstage employees, including "Mean" Gene Okerlund and Buff Bagwell's mom, Judy. This led to a short feud with Buff Bagwell, and at the following pay-per-view event, New Blood Rising, he lost to Buff in the Judy-Bagwell-on-a-Forklift match. He would leave WCW again shortly afterward.
Kanyon returned yet again in 2001, attacking DDP and reigniting his feud with Page again. Page would soon defeat Kanyon in a rematch the following night on Nitro. He then began a feud with Ernest "The Cat" Miller, and began a small gimmick change, which involved his wearing a long black leather jacket and new entrance music. The feud would soon be dropped due to the WWF's (now WWE) purchase of WCW in March 2001.
In July 2001, Kanyon made his second return to the WWE as part of the Alliance. He would soon receive the United States Championship from Stephanie McMahon at the request of Booker T. It was then during this time that he would frequently asked the rhetorical question, "Who betta then Kanyon?"
He reformed with Page again to help him attack the Undertaker backstage on RAW. They later defeated the APA, (Acolytes Protection Agency) for the WWF Tag Team Championship. Their reign was short-lived, however, as they would drop the titles to the Brothers of Destruction, (Kane and Undertaker) at SummerSlam. Kanyon went on to lose the United States title to Tajiri, on September 10, 2001.
He later suffered an injury during a dark match, facing Randy Orton. He underwent surgery and was sidelined during the remainder of the "Invasion" angle. After recovering, he suffered yet another injury, this time at the hands of Lance Cade in Lima, Ohio. He gradually recovered again and returned to OVW in late 2002.
He returned in 2003 and became a part of the feud between Big Show and The Undertaker. He emerged from a large crate, dressed as Boy George, and began singing, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" before being viciously attacked by The Undertaker. He would then wrestle on Velocity, under his "Who Betta then Kanyon?" persona, and lost to Rhyno. He was released on February 9, 2004, after not being used in any major storylines.
Although he made an appearance in TNA Turning Point 2005, he retired in 2006 and joined Tha O Show , as a regular columnist, claiming that Bret Hart admitted to him that Vince McMahon and Pat Patterson were all in on the Montreal Screwjob.
