Inside scoop from Saturday at Skills Competition

NASHVILLE -- NHL benches are typically sacred areas, reserved for teams; for coaches, players and trainers. Occasionally they'll let a broadcaster on the bench for an interview, but it's normally a place where strategy is discussed, trash talk is expected and conversations are kept private.
None of that was true Saturday at Bridgestone Arena during the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition. The benches were littered with people, from players' kids to reporters from the major networks, to NHL and NHLPA representatives.

NASHVILLE -- Nashville Predators defensemen Shea Weber and Roman Josi, goalie Pekka Rinne and forward James Neal got to experience the 2016 Honda NHL Skills Competition in front of a raucous home crowd at Bridgestone Arena on Saturday.
It erupted with cheers as the Predators were announced in introductions before the start of the competition, and the fans kept that energy going throughout the night.

The unlikely NHL All-Star got a rousing ovation from the Bridgestone Arena crowd and even pulled off a spin-o-rama in the Discover Shootout on Saturday.

NASHVILLE -- Washington Capitals goalie Braden Holtby grew up watching a generation of NHL goaltenders who were phenomenal stick-handlers.

Weber repeats as hardest shot champ

NASHVILLE -- Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber won the AMP Energy NHL Hardest Shot for the second consecutive season with a shot of 108.1 mph.
Weber fell short of the 108.5 mph shot he had in 2015 in Columbus, but his 108.1 mph shot was the runaway winner. Weber's first attempt was 105.3 mph. He got a loud ovation from the Nashville fans when his name was announced.

The 2016 champ says that's not the case.
New York Islanders captain John Tavares was the best of the sharpshooters Saturday at the 2016 Honda All-Star Skills Competition, helping the Eastern Conference to a 3-2 win in the event.
West defeats East in Skills Challenge Relay

NASHVILLE -- The Western Conference defeated the Eastern Conference in the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Challenge Relay competition at Bridgestone Arena on Saturday.
The timed relay event involved 14 skaters and two goalies from each team and consisted of four relays with five challenges each: One Timers, with three shooters and one passer per team; Passing, with one passer per team; Puck Control, with one skater per team; Stick-Handling, with one skater per team; and Goalie Goals, with one goalie per team.
East dominates shootout, wins Skills Competition

NASHVILLE -- The Eastern Conference dominated the Western Conference in the Discover Shootout, the final event of the Honda All-Star Skills Competition at Bridgestone Arena on Saturday.
The Eastern Conference won the Skills Competition 29-12, which allowed it to choose the order of play in the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game on Sunday (5 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports). Captains Jaromir Jagr of the Florida Panthers and John Tavares of the New York Islanders chose to play first.

Larkin sets fastest skater record
19-year old rookie breaks Gartner's 20-year mark

NASHVILLE -- Detroit Red Wings rookie forward Dylan Larkin is the fastest skater in the history of the NHL All-Star Skills competition.
Larkin, 19, took advantage of the opportunity he earned Saturday night to best the record held by Mike Gartner, finishing his lap of the Bridgestone Arena ice surface in 13.172 seconds during the Bridgestone Fastest Skater competition that opened the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition.
