PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins got a significantly different result in their third series with the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in three years.

After being eliminated by the Rangers in each of the past two postseasons, the Penguins controlled much of the Eastern Conference First Round series on their way to a 4-1 series victory. Pittsburgh was particularly impressive in Games 4 and 5, winning by the combined score of 11-3.

PITTSBURGH -- The New York Rangers knew what was coming. They couldn't stop it.

The Pittsburgh Penguins steamrolled into the Stanley Cup Playoffs as winners of 14 of their last 16 games while averaging four goals per game. The Rangers thought they had a great chance to slow down the Penguins with their experience, their goaltender and their history of knocking them out of the playoffs the previous two seasons.

Seven skaters who played for the Penguins against the New York Rangers in Eastern Conference First Round last season were on the ice Saturday at Consol Energy Center, helping Pittsburgh eliminate the Rangers in five games, reversing the result of last year.

Lundqvist played a significant role in eliminating the Pittsburgh Penguins from the Stanley Cup Playoffs the past two years. On Saturday, he allowed four goals in the second period and watched from the bench in the third while the Rangers struggled to a 6-3 loss to the Penguins at Consol Energy Center and a 4-1 series defeat in the Eastern Conference First Round.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins became the second team to advance to the Eastern Conference Second Round with a 6-3, Game 5 win against the New York Rangers at Consol Energy Center on Saturday. The Penguins defeated the Rangers 4-1 in the best-of-7 first-round series.

The Penguins, who lost to the Rangers in five games in the first round last season, have to wait until Sunday at the earliest to find out who they will play next, the winner of the series between the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins kept history from repeating itself.

A second-period surge gave the Penguins a 6-3, Game 5 win against the New York Rangers that ended their Eastern Conference First Round series at Consol Energy Center on Saturday.

Bryan Rust scored the first and fourth goals of the second period less than 14 minutes apart to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 6-2 lead against the New York Rangers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference First Round at Consol Energy Center on Saturday.

Rust broke a 2-2 tie at 5:21 of the period. Matt Cullen scored at 9:26 and Conor Sheary at 16:18 before Rust got his second at 19:01 for the 6-2 lead.

The New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins had a back-and-forth first period in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference First Round series at Consol Energy Center on Saturday.

PITTSBURGH -- New York Rangers defenseman Dan Boyle is scratched against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference First Round at Consol Energy Center on Saturday (3 p.m. ET; NBC, TVA Sports, SN360).

Boyle, who previously told NorthJersey.com he will likely retire at the end of the 2015-16 season, may have played his final NHL game, should the Rangers be eliminated from the playoffs Saturday.

Pittsburgh leads the best-of-7 series 3-1.
