AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — After the first package exploded on an Austin doorstep, police assured the public that there was no wider threat, no signs of terrorism. The idea of a serial bomber striking random strangers never came up.
The March 2 blast killed Anthony Stephan House, a 39-year-old man with a background in finance and an 8-year-old daughter. Investigators didn't rule out that House may have mishandled homemade explosives.

The president of the Austin chapter of the NAACP is calling on investigators to release the recording of what the authorities have referred to as the dead bomber's confession.
Nelson Linder said Friday that the public should get to hear the entire 25-minute recording so that everyone can learn more about the suspected bomber, Mark Anthony Conditt.
PFLUGERVILLE, Texas (AP) — The mother of a man who lived with the suspected Austin bomber says her son was handcuffed, taken into custody by SWAT officers and held overnight before police found the suspect who blew himself up.
When a law enforcement official described a cellphone recording left by the Austin serial bomber as "the outcry of a very challenged young man," the remark caused an outcry of its own.
Because the bomber was white, some people almost immediately questioned whether the same level of compassion would have been afforded a person of color.
