Weekend estimates: Death on the Nile wins Super Bowl weekend

The studios are in a cautious mood this morning, projecting a steep fall-off at the box office on Sunday thanks to the Super Bowl, and little upside from Sunday being the day before Valentine’s Day. That leaves the studio estimates somewhat behind what our model predicted on Friday morning, but still sees relatively solid debuts for Death on the Nile and Marry Me, at $12.8 million and $8 million respectively. Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to power ahead and will hit $759 million in total domestically by the end of the day today, per Sony’s prediction. Weekend predictions: Death on the Nile headed to welcome weekend win

In this week’s update to our annual market prediction, I mentioned how important the performance of Death on the Nile will be to gauging the key “older” demographic (in industry terms, “anyone over 25”). So its $1.1 million in previews (which includes some early access screenings on Wednesday, as well as regular Thursday previews) is a welcome sign, and points to a weekend win. Despite three new wide releases entering theaters this weekend, last week’s widest release and box office winner, jackass forever, once again tops our chart, bringing the location count to 3,653 as it enters its second weekend. After taking in a solid $28 million in its first six days, this week the slapstick comedy will have to contend with a range of genres arriving to the big screen, including an action film, a thriller, and a romantic comedy just in time for Valentine’s Day. 2022 market prediction: studio shifts pull expected box office down $200 million from last month

The Omicron variant dampened audience enthusiasm for going to movie theaters in January and the beginning of February, but Scream out-performed expectations and jackass forever hit its target, which was enough to make up for a modest debut by Moonfall and poor performances from Redeeming Love and The King’s Daughter. All of which meant that moviegoers fought our model to a draw overall—box office is running about 3% behind where we expected it to be this time last month. Weekend estimates: jackass forever posts healthy $23.5 million

jackass forever was the hot favorite to win going into the weekend, and it’ll win in some style, as it appears to have gained momentum as the weekend has progressed. On Friday morning our model predicted an $18.1-million opening weekend for the stunt-reality-comedy movie. Paramount projected a $20.7-million weekend on Saturday morning once they’d seen Friday’s numbers, and have now upped that to a projected $23.5 million this morning. While that’s not huge by the standards of the franchise (Jackass 3D opened with over $50 million back in 2010, for example), it’s a very respectable figure by pandemic standards, and a welcome increase in business for movie theaters that have lacked new content in recent weeks. Moonfall’s $10-million debut is more disappointing, but also a little ahead of where things looked based on its modest Thursday previews. More...
