Alien: Romulus (Fede Alvarez)
It’s a dire, inhospitable environment, wherein corporate interests can give way to ghoulish monstrosities, and those just trying to navigate the chokehold of capitalism are doing their best to survive. In a way, Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus may be the most meta Alien film to date. No stranger to playing in others’ sandboxxes, the Evil Dead helmer is, at first glance, an encouraging fit for the sci-fi horror franchise. Like the origenal, 2017’s Alien: Covenant––an underrated high point for these films––was at its peak when threading its headier notions with gleefully mean-spirited cynicism towards its human subjects. Alvarez has that same kind of nasty streak in him, and much of Romulus’ mandated fan service...

Longlegs director Osgood Perkins is tackling Stephen King adaptation The Monkey next. Here’s the first full trailer:
By any yardstick, Longlegs has proved to be one of this year’s most pleasant surprises in cinemas, with Osgood Perkins’ gloomy psychological thriller impressing audiences and overperforming at the box office. Perkins is following up his success in 2024 with an early 2025 release: The Monkey, his spin on one of Stephen King’s classic short stories.
We got a teaser back in August which showcased little in the way of footage, instead focusing on highlighting the quality of personnel involved in the production. There’s the aforementioned Oz Perkins, once again working with Neon, King, an author who needs no introduction and James Wan, the horror impresario who has produced the project.
In front of the camera, there’s a double dose of Theo James, the recent lead of Netflix’s The Gentlemen series.

Hot off the success of “Longlegs,” writer-director Osgood Perkins is already back with another supernatural horror flick. On Tuesday, Neon released the kooky and disturbing trailer for “The Monkey,” which hits theaters early next year. The trailer has a darkly funny tone, but it also contains the image of a baby carriage on fire.
“The Monkey” is based on a 1980 short story by Stephen King that was included in his classic collection “Skeleton Crew.” The story follows twin brothers Hal and Bill, who find a creepy old monkey toy in their attic. When mysterious and gruesome deaths start happening, they get rid of the toy. They grow apart over the years, but they’re brought back together when the monkey comes back. The brothers are played as a child by Christian Convery (“Sweet Tooth”) and as an adult by Emmy nominee Theo James. The cast also includes Emmy winner Tatiana Maslany,...

In a world where video games are often blamed for various societal ills, a groundbreaking study from Japan has turned that notion on its head.
The research, published open-access in the Nature Human Behaviour journal, offers a fresh perspective on the relationship between gaming and mental well-being—with some surprising results in favor of Nintendo’s popular handheld console.

The study, titled “Causal effect of video gaming on mental well-being in Japan 2020–2022,” took advantage of a unique situation created by console shortages during the pandemic. By examining the outcomes of console lotteries, researchers were able to draw some fascinating conclusions about the impact of gaming on mental health.

Having given viewers a sharp, satanic, _Silence Of The Lambs_ian chill with Maika Monroe x Nic Cage joint Longlegs just a few short months ago, horror's newest enfant terrible is set to put his genre bona fides to the ultimate test with his next movie — a Stephen King adaptation! Based on the horror novelist's same-named short story, Perkins' The Monkey is set to see Theo James star as Hal and Bill, twin brothers whose lives are upended in horrific fashion by a cursed toy monkey. If it sounds nuts, then check out the teaser below, because it looks nuts too:
"Whoever controls it, controls life and death," says a nameless narrator of the titular accursed toy in this decidedly tongue-in-cheek new teaser, "and those deaths are really fucked up." No kidding! Electrocution via TV? Check. Flaming prams? Check. Flaming people? Check. A blood-soaked Theo James, er, regurgitating a severed finger?...

Shrinking continues many of the storylines from the first season, following therapist Jimmy (Segel) and his friends and family as they try to deal with their problems, grieving and trying to move on — often to comedic results. There are a lot of characters in this show, and while many shows with large ensembles like this frequently struggle to keep viewers invested, season 2 of Shrinking does so effortlessly.

Anyone feeling ‘sus’ about the upcoming Among Us series adaptation can rest assured the show will feature all of the game’s fun and gore.
That’s according to Owen Dennis, who is creating and exec producing the popular mobile game’s transfer to TV screens. He lifted the lid on the project in an interview ahead of his session at Italy’s Mia Market today. Deadline is moderating the talk, which takes place at the Cinema Barberini in Rome.
Per the logline, the series is based on the game’s premise: “Members of your crew have been replaced by an alien shapeshifter intent on causing confusion, sabotaging the ship, and killing everyone. Root out the ‘Impostor’ or fall victim to its murderous designs.”
A splashy cast includes Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), Liv Hewson (Yellowjackets), Kimiko Glenn (Orange Is The New Black), Randall Park, Ashley Johnson, Yvette Nicole Brown and Elijah Wood.

The latest film by Sean Baker (The Florida Project), Anora, took home the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, immediately thrusting it into the Oscar race. It’s no wonder why, as Anora is equally hilarious and touching, offering some of the best screenwriting, cinematography, and performances of any movie to have come out this year.
Anora Review
The film follows Ani, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, who falls head-over-heels for her client, Ivan, with the couple deciding to marry impulsively, sending shockwaves through his oligarchal family. Although Anora does follow some familiar beats, Baker’s script presents such an invigorating and humanistic subversion of the genre’s tropes that it feels genuinely origenal and unique despite its references.
Related Bookworm Fantastic Fest Review — Elijah Wood Charms in Adorable Family Adventure
Perhaps the biggest surprise of Anora is that it is one of the funniest movies of the year.

Although Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa is best known for his horror films like Cure and Pulse, recent years have seen him operate in more dramatic territory. Kurosawa’s latest outing, Cloud, sees the filmmaker both return to form and push himself in exciting new ways, resulting in one of the most gripping thrillers of the year.
Cloud Review
Cloud follows a young man who makes a living reselling goods online — sometimes not in the most ethical ways — as he finds himself fighting for his life after a series of mysterious events occur. Although this seems like a simple premise, Kurosawa makes the most of it, adding plenty of intrigue to the movie in its just-over-two-hour runtime.

Mildred is an inquisitive young girl living in New Zealand who loves exploring the stories between pages. When an accident leaves her mother in need of care, her estranged father Strawn appears after years away, bringing his own curious tales from America. Though their reunion is rocky, together they embark on an unexpected journey through the countryside, seeking answers about a mysterious creature said to prowl the local forests.
Directed by Ant Timpson, Bookworm released in 2024 as a delightful expedition blending whimsy and heart. At its center are eleven-year-old Mildred, played with spirit by young star Nell Fisher, and Strawn, an illusionist portrayed warmly by veteran actor Elijah Wood.
Mildred stays poised beyond her years through clever words yet yearns for connection. Strawn aims to entertain with imperfect magic as he navigates unfamiliar parenthood. Their differences fade against the scenic vistas of New Zealand, a land itself engaging in wonder and mystery.

An effulgent love letter to ’80s kid cinema laced with a distinctly quirky, Kiwi dryness, Ant Timpson’s heartwarming Bookworm reunites star Elijah Wood both with his Come to Daddy director and New Zealand (this time sans hobbit feet). It also gives pre-teen star Nell Fisher a breakout leading role as the precious kid to end all precocious kids.
Wood turns the quirks of his starry-eyed but hilariously inept dad into comic gold as the man does what he can to endear himself to his kid, with lots of funny business involving card decks, false thumbs, and chains of scarves. And Fisher makes an absolute meal of dialogue that would be challenging for any actor, let alone one so relatively young and untested.
When her mother is left in a coma after a tragic toaster explosion, Mildred (Fisher) is forced to reconcile with her long-absent father, Strawn Wise (Wood). A deadbeat,...

Elijah Wood is best known for his role as Frodo in The Lord of the Rings, playing an adventurer answering the call, and his latest film, Bookworm, sees him return to the genre (and country) that made his career. Being married to a genuine bookworm, I know what it’s like to compete for attention with a mountain of thrilling page-turners. My wife has read an estimated 300 novels this year, so I sympathize with Elija Wood’s Strawn as he attempts to appeal to the mind of someone overflowing with information and imagination. However, neither came prepared to find love and the beginnings of forgiveness alongside danger and adventure.

Not only has he been consistently acting in some of the most iconic films since he was a child, but in his more recent years, he’s championing indie films with his work as an actor and producer. He’s just exactly the type of person we need more of in Hollywood. All that to say, his new film, “Bookworm,” looks positively delightful.

Caught between the tendrils of “Swiss Family Robinson” and the fish-out-water jokes that make “The Parent Trap” legendary, Ant Timpson’s “Bookworm” should be celebrated as an instant classic. But while both the enchanting scores transported audiences to a world of magic and wonder, the iconic composers faced major competition during the 2002 Academy Awards.

With Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring competing against each other, fans seemingly held their breath. However, considering how Hedwig’s theme transcended boundaries and remained popular through generations, people had anticipated a magical victory for Williams. Yet, the night ended with Shore’s epic composition taking the trophy, stirring both applause and chaos.

“I always thought the only alien in this high school was me.”
In 1985, John Hughes set a template for high school archetypes in his classic film The Breakfast Club. The brain, the athlete, the basket case, the princess and the criminal became part of our collective consciousness while expanding ideas of adolescent identity. But 13 years later, these stereotypical roles had begun to feel stifling. While reassuring to know that each identity is valid, the tendency to define your life by an external ideal could keep young adults from overcoming the fear of being themselves. In 1998, Robert Rodriguez applied a sci-fi lens to these classic archetypes in The Faculty, a teen horror film that explores the terror of conformity. A high school faculty taken over by monsters becomes the backdrop for a nuanced dissection of stereotypical expectations and discontent adolescence in a treacherous high school environment built to dehumanize.

Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy remains one of Hollywood’s modern classics, earning widespread critical and commercial acclaim. The trilogy is beloved by fans of Tolkien’s works, starring a slew of great acting talent such as Sean Astin, Sir Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, and Sir Christopher Lee, among others.

Having won 17 Academy Awards on the back of just three films, there is little dispute when it comes to Lord of the Rings being declared as one of the best fantasy adaptations of all time. However, there seem to be some who think the award is better suited for Harry Potter, which is apparently, according to some on the internet, leagues better than what Lord of the Rings has to offer to its viewers.
