Sometimes, when watching a movie like Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black, you grade them on a curve. This depends on the aspirations of the filmmaker(s) and the intended audience. After all, can you grade pornography in the same way you would evaluate Citizen Kane? Before you mock my point, remember that Roger Ebert used to review them, ensuring Russ Meyer received his due.
This brings us to another entry from the uber-successful filmmaker Tyler Perry. To put it politely, his latest film, Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black, has something for everyone. The truth, however, is that the movie is wildly uneven. Perry’s script morphs from a thoughtful story about a woman dealing with divorce into Sleeping with the Enemy territory.

With the news that CBS is currently in “accelerated development” on a new daytime soap opera geared towards the African American audience, daytime soap icon Victoria Rowell, who portrayed Drucilla Barber Winters on “The Young and the Restless” off and on from 1990-2007, is happy to see change happening both on-screen and behind the scenes when it comes to the future of daytime dramas.
In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, Rowell said, “Change is Possible! Believe it!” while linking to a news story on “The Gates,” a new soap being spearheaded by the first and only Black woman ever to hold the position of head writer/co-head writer of a daytime drama series, Michele Val Jean, and follows a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community.

To be eligible, a film must be at least 10 years old and carry what the library considers to be “cultural, historic or aesthetic importance,” in consultation with National Film Preservation Board members and other experts.

Do you see her? The Black mother wiping her son’s inner eye on a Harlem corner? It’s the late ’90s and she’s piecing her life back together after a prison stint. What about the mother positioning an infant for a photo? She works at a studio, tucked in a Bay Area mall, trying to make ends meet before the birth of her third child. Or the Black mother lounging in her living room during a party? Guests, drunk on liquor and a good time, buzz around her as a young girl plays at her feet.
These women are the central figures of three revelatory dramas released this year. In A.V. Rockwell’s A Thousand and One, Savanah Leaf’s Earth Mama and Raven Jackson’s All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, which opens in limited release Nov. 3, Black mothers assume more complex roles than the ones Hollywood usually affords them.

Angelica Ross is accusing Ryan Murphy of ghosting her over an “American Horror Story” season idea.
Ross, who appeared in Seasons 9 and 10 of the anthology series as well as Murphy’s “Pose,” tweeted emails allegedly sent by Murphy that suggested the executive producer was interested in an all-Black season of “AHS.”
An email claimed to be from Murphy in July 2020 to Ross reads, “Remember your idea about a ‘Horror’ season starring Black women? Well I’m doing it. Not sure of the story yet, but we will start a writers room in the fall.”
Murphy lists Keke Palmer and Gabourey Sidibe as potential co-stars and asks Ross to suggest another name to round out the foursome. Ross suggested Debbi Morgan and Angela Bassett, along with Halle Berry, Kerry Washington, and more actresses to co-star.
Ross then explained that Murphy “left [her] on read” in a TikTok video, also noting she followed...

Angelica Ross, known for her work in “Pose” and “American Horror Story,” said Ryan Murphy left her “on read” about a seemingly scrapped season of “AHS” that would feature a cast led by Black women.
Ross posted screenshots of emails sent between herself and the prolific producer dating back to July 2020 on Monday, in which Murphy seemed to confirm the existence of the season and asked Ross for guidance on which other women should lead the installment.
“Remember your idea about a Horror seasons starring Black women? The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.
“Beef” tied with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for the most nominations among all non-regular series programs with 13. It’s presently in the lead among Gold Derby voters in the limited series race with 16/5 combined odds. Its star Ali Wong is also in first place among limited lead actresses,...

Lifetime delivers another engaging biopic.
The network has delivered more than a few of them, and Keyshia Cole: This is My Story was not only executive produced by the R&b singer, but she starred in it as well.
The film had the task of serving as both a biopic of Keyshia's life, specifically capturing her ascent to fame, while also serving as a tribute to her late mother, Frankie.
It was a fitting biopic to follow the Mary J. Blige double feature of Real Love and Strength of a Woman. The timing of all three couldn't be better falling within Black Music History month. And both women did a strong job with their first projects they executive produced for the network.
In many ways, the pacing of the film was frenetic, sailing through her adolescence so quickly it barely covered ten minutes of the film and jumping all...

James St. Patrick is gone but definitely not forgotten. His spirit lives on via his son Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) as is evident in the trailer for Season 3 of the hit Starz series Power Book II: Ghost, above.
The show returns with new episodes on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day.
The trailer shows Tariq really coming into his own as part of the underworld and finding comfort in spaces his father did. Like the strip clubs and nightclubs that conjure up memories of being at Truth, wheeling and dealing, in the flagship series Power.
The young St. Patrick even has his own “Tommy” by his side, Brayden (Gianni Paolo), and they’re looking to make Wall Street-level money. Method Man’s Davis MacLean has stepped out of the courtroom and into a bigger role in Tariq’s life. With the guidance of a smart and diligent attorney, the sky is the limit.

Tucker’s back on Y&r with a new mysterious connection to Diane. Pic credit: CBS
Who is Tucker McCall on The Young and the Restless? That’s a question many Y&r fans are asking as the character resurfaced with a new face and new drama.
It’s been a while since viewers of the hit CBS daytime drama have seen Tucker on-screen.
The character left Genoa City for Hong Kong in 2013, leaving behind his mother, Katherine (Jeanne Cooper), and son Devon (Bryton James).
Now Tucker’s back in town thanks to Diane (Susan Walters), although she’s definitely not happy about his return.
Although they did have one-night stand years ago, Tucker showing up in Genoa City has nothing to do with their tryst but rather one of Diane’s many deep dark secrets.
Before what brings Tucker back comes to light, it’s time for a little refresher on the character.

One Shot is a series that seeks to find an essence of cinema history in one single image of a movie. The mirror reflects a curious and alarming scene: in the foreground, Mozelle, a young woman, and Eve, a little girl, gaze wide-eyed at the men standing behind them. One of the men holds a gun to the chest of the other. The shot embodies the seamless ambition of Kasi Lemmons’s directorial debut Eve’s Bayou (1997), the tale of the Batistes, a haunted Creole family plagued by the careless philandering of their patriarch. Eve (Jurnee Smollett) has already caught her father making love to his mistress—a poorly kept secret in any case—but by now rage has eclipsed heartbreak as she helplessly watches her family unravel. Her aunt Mozelle (Debbi Morgan) seeks to impart upon the child an unconventional lesson in grace by revealing her own past infidelity: she had planned,...

Our Kind of People‘s finale ended with a cliffhanger, but fans won’t get to find out if Leah lives or dies — Fox has pulled the plug on the sexy and soapy drama.
Created by former mixed-ish showrunner Karin Gist and executive-produced by Empire’s Lee Daniels, Our Kind of People spotlighted the Black, rich and fabulous who call the Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard home. Chicago Med alum Yaya DaCosta starred as Angela, an ambitious but kind social climber and single mother who came to the Bluffs to find out the identity of her biological father and launch her hair care line.

It almost felt like an episode of The Bachelorette when not one but two men proposed to Angela on Tuesday’s Season 1 finale of Our Kind of People.
We’ll get to whom she chose in a bit, but first, let’s unpack all of the wacky things that happened along the way. For starters, Taylor broke up with Nikki to be with Lauren, causing Nikki to act super emotional and borderline insane. What’s even crazier is that Taylor didn’t say why they needed to break up before Nikki stormed off and wondered if she would ever love again.
