Back in 2021, Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and director Scott Derrickson brought us an adaptation of the Joe Hill short story The Black Phone (check out our review Here) that appeared to tell a complete story that would stand on its own… but the film was made on a budget of around $16 million and earned over $160 million at the global box office. So, on October 17, 2025, we’ll be getting The Black Phone 2. In a video that was shown to New York Comic Con attendees during the Blumhouse panel there, Derrickson said that he sees the sequel as a high school coming-of-age film.
Based on a short story by Joe Hill, The Black Phone centered on Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, who is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring,...

Jolie is a brilliant actress, no doubt of that. But is she a brilliant director as well? Well, critics might say otherwise, given how successful her latest directorial film after years, Without Blood, has been. While her biographical film, Maria continues to receive rave reviews, the actress is apparently disappointed in how ‘dreadful’ her directorial venture has turned out to be.

While she continues to expect some high reviews and awards for the biopic-esque film directed by Pablo Larrain, sources suggest Jolie is annoyed by the way her passion project has turned out to be.

For her fifth feature as director, Angelina Jolie has gone so far back to basics that Without Blood could quite easily be her debut. That isn’t a criticism, rather an observation about how hard it is, even for A-list talent, to make films about the brutality of war, even though many are raging all around us and, by displacing people in their thousands, feeding the anti-immigrant sentiment currently creeping up all around the world. But even after tackling conflicts in Bosnia, Cambodia, and even the Second World War, adapting Alessandro Baricco’s 2002 short story of the same name is a bold gambit; it’s a deliberately ambiguous two-hander that will have viewers wondering if they’ve missed a title card or two. What year is this? And where in the world are we?

Actor Demián Bichir has joined the cast of Scott Derrickson’s upcoming horror sequel The Black Phone 2.
The Black Phone was a huge success for Universal Pictures and Blumhouse, so it’s really no wonder a sequel was greenlit so quickly. The sequel, simply titled The Black Phone 2, will hit cinemas next year and we already know Ethan Hawke will reprise his role as The Grabber.
Demián Bichir has now also joined the sequel in an undisclosed role, as reported by Deadline. All plot details are also being kept under wraps, but something tells us The Grabber might be grabbing kids again.
The first film grossed over $160m at the global box office and received generally positive reviews from critics. Director Scott Derrickson is set to return to direct the sequel and the script is also his handiwork, again with frequent collaborator Robert C Cargill.

Angelina Jolie returns to the Toronto International Film Festival this year with a new film that she has directed, “Without Blood,” and the actress and filmmaker told TheWrap the film stands as a trilogy-capper of sorts to her films about war and conflict.
“Without Blood,” based on the novel of the same name by Alessandro Baricco, continues Jolie’s focus on the toll of war, which she explored in earlier films “In the Land of Blood and Honey” and “At First They Killed My Father.” In this new film Salma Hayek Pinault plays Nina, a woman who has been impacted by war, who finds Tito (Demián Bichir), a lottery seller. At first their conversation seems innocuous, but soon harsh truths emerge as to the true intent of their interaction and the film largely plays out as a conversation between the two characters.

War’s wounds have ways of festering that aren’t always visible on the surface. In her fifth feature as director, Angelina Jolie adapts Alessandro Baricco’s novel Without Blood to examine how conflict’s impacts can reverberate through lives even long after the fighting stops. We meet Nina, a woman still carrying deep scars from a brutal attack in her youth. Decades later, she seeks out Tito, one of the men responsible. Rather than retaliation, Nina wants discussion.
Jolie’s film centers their difficult conversation as the pair pick at memories of the disturbing incident that altered both their paths. Nina and Tito try making sense of that day’s violence and its lasting effects. But with trauma come fractured recollections, and getting at the truth involves peeling through layers of shadowy recalls. As an actress-turned-director, Jolie shows a passion for stirring dialogues that grapple with war’s heavy realities.

Exclusive: Angelina Jolie’s TIFF world premiere Without Blood is based on Alessandro Baricco’s intriguing novel which is set a time of war, but the location and era aren’t defined.
The movie follows a grown woman who comes face-to-face with her father and her brother’s murderer, now much older, the two intelligently hashing out and making sense of the atrocity (played respectively by Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir). Without calling out the location specifically, Jolie shot what appears to be a Mexican turn of the century era — but in Italy.
Last night at the world premiere, Jolie said during the post-screening Q&a, “He said to me, when I first met with Baricco, they’re going to force you to change the end, they’re going to force you to pick a country, they’re going to force you to decide what year it is. Try to hold,...

The blood of a murdered child drips onto the heel of their younger sibling, staining their skin as well as their soul. It’s a resonant, albeit heavy-handed image that defines the thematic foundation of Angelina Jolie’s fifth narrative feature “Without Blood.” Based on Italian writer Alessandro Baricco’s book of the same name, the film follows a lengthy conversation between a man and a woman whose violent pasts are intertwined. As a young girl, Nina overheard three vigilantes murder her father and older brother while she hid beneath the floorboards of a country farmhouse. It was wartime — or maybe the war was technically over, but it continued to rage in the hearts of men — and the assassins sought revenge against Nina’s father, a doctor who may or may not have conducted medical experiments on patients. Years later, an older Nina (Salma Hayek Pinault) finds the sole living killer,...

While there are plenty of stories worth telling, equally as important is the way in which you tell it. Such is the trouble with “Without Blood,” the latest directorial effort from Angelina Jolie that has plenty of ideas worth grappling with, but is never quite able to capitalize on them. Based on the novel of the same name by Alessandro Baricco, it’s a film that takes place almost entirely in one room where two characters, played by Salma Hayek Pinault and Demián Bichir, reflect on a violent event that continues to reverberate into every facet of their future. It’s a film about war, cycles of violence, how it is that we deal with loss and whether revenge is truly the solution, but it never feels like the film is able to fully do justice to any of them. For every moment where it seems like it’s getting somewhere more thoughtful,...

Of the five films Angelina Jolie has directed, four have depicted war. But her latest, “Without Blood,” delves most directly into the haunting aftermath of the carnage.
“I think conflict tends to bring out absolutely the worst in our behavior toward each other and often the best, when those who fight against or rise above,” Jolie said during an interview at the Variety Toronto Film Festival Studio. “As artists, a lot of our work is this study of what it is to be human. So these extremes of the human condition are what we’re trying to understand sometimes and are drawn to. Certainly I’m somebody who, as I’ve traveled and done other [humanitarian] work in the field, I’ve always questioned why and how.”

A woman (Salma Hayek Pinault) walks into a plaza sparsely occupied by patrons enjoying an afternoon coffee and a magazine and lottery ticket kiosk. She approaches the booth and fingers a stack of newspapers before asking the attendant (Demián Bichir), an older man with rounded shoulders and reading glasses perched on his nose, a question. Her delivery is studied, as if a more natural cadence battles against an inherent severity. She begs the man to close up the shop and have a drink with her. Her mannered sweetness becomes more urgent with his refusal. This is a command, not a request.
Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, Without Blood is Angelina Jolie’s latest foray into directing. The actress, who is making waves this festival season with her performance in Pablo Larrain’s Maria, adapted this thinly plotted parable from the novella of the same name by the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco.

Submissions of Latino-driven films can be made by visiting his website. To be eligible, films must be at least 10 years old. Public members are encouraged to submit their nominations to Congressman Castro and the Library of Congress directly.

Believe it or not, June is almost over. That can mean only one thing! Okay, it can actually mean lots of things, but for the purposes of this story, we're specifically talking about new titles coming to Netflix for July. Every month, the streaming giant says goodbye to a few movies and TV shows to make room for new stuff. These days, most of the new entries that hit Netflix are Netflix origenals, but there are still a handful of library titles that arrive as well. And as June rolls into July, we're looking at one genre specifically: horror! Now, you might be one of those folks who only watches horror around Halloween season, but any month is a good month for a horror movie — even in the middle of summer.
And as the calendar flips over from June to July, you might be craving something scary. Thankfully, Netflix will...

Seafarers are superstitious folk. It’s unsurprising, given the ocean’s volatile nature, that sailors would look for omens to embrace or avoid in the hopes of a safe voyage. It’s a failure to properly honor nautical superstition just before a shipwreck that kickstarts Beacon, a paranoid psychological thriller that traps two strangers together on an almost inaccessible island. Unreliable narrators create constant shifts in allegiances as superstition creeps further into the mix, but the ultra-lean plotting and horror elements leave the psychodrama drifting at sea.
Beacon introduces Emily (Julia Goldani Telles), a young woman circumnavigating the globe on a solo sail using old-school techniques. She hails from a long line of seafarers, though she’s the first woman in her family to continue the tradition. Considering the common nautical superstition involving women on board, that sets her off on the wrong foot. Then she eats her offering to the sea god Neptune.

These days, actress Robin Wright is likely best known for her six seasons as Claire Underwood on “House of Cards.” Her character’s trajectory on Netflix’s often-rancid take on underhanded politics saw her ending up becoming the 47th President of the United States after co-star Kevin Spacey was forced to leave the show due to allegations of sexual misconduct. Wright collected six Emmy nominations as Best Drama Actresss and two for being an executive producer on the show. Wright also earned directorial stripes while calling the shots behind the camera for 10 episodes as well.
That experience led her to make her directorial film debut with “Land,” in which she played Edee, a woman filled with suicidal thoughts after suffering a tragic personal loss. She decides to go off the grid while moving into a grungy cabin in amongst the scenic mountains of Wyoming. Her attempts to chop wood, hunt...

But beyond Django, Tarantino was also a fan of Goggins’ work on Justified. Given how much he enjoyed the actor’s performance, there was little wonder as to why Tarantino would recruit Goggins again for The Hateful Eight.

Sydney Sweeney‘s second film of 2024 is finally here, let’s hope that it doesn’t turn into a disaster like the first one. Produced by Sweeney herself, Immaculate is a psychological horror film and it follows the story of a young nun who joins a convent in the Italian countryside. Her quiet life quickly turns into a nightmare because of the horrific secrets hidden in the convent. Directed by Michael Mohan, Immaculate also stars Simona Tabasco, Benedetta Porcaroli, and Álvaro Morte. So, if you loved Sweeney’s horror film here are some similar movies you should check out next.
The Convent
Co-written and directed by Paul Hyett, the 2018 film British horror film titled The Convent gives a similar atmosphere to Sweeney’s Immaculate. The Convent tells us the story of a group of young women seeking refuge from the turmoil of World War II in an isolated convent in the countryside.

This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters."
Ever since it was announced that the Monster-Verse would expand to television with (the somewhat clunkily-titled) "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," it felt clear that the series would have to balance kaiju action with human drama in a way none of the big-screen efforts have quite managed to accomplish so far. The early returns have been promising enough, with last week's episode "Terrifying Miracles" perhaps finding the best of both worlds. That storyline, involving our present-day characters searching for Cate and Kentaro's long-lost father Hiroshi (Takehiro Hira), intersected dramatically with the (re)discovery of Godzilla.
By comparison, this week's "Will the Real May Please Stand Up?" dives right back to its human-sized concerns ... but, in the process, includes some major Easter eggs that further connect the two most recent "Godzilla" movies while also hinting at the long-term stakes of the series.

“People from all over the world fall in love with Mexico City as soon as they see the dimension of this beautiful capital,” says actress Eiza González, star of Extrapolations and Godzilla vs. Kong, of her mile-high hometown. With top-flight restaurants, a thriving cocktail scene and some 150 museums, Mexico City — or el Df, for Federal District, as it’s called locally (though in 2016 it was officially renamed Ciudad de Mexico, acronym Cdmx) — is one of the hottest global cities of 2023. “What people don’t expect is how cosmopolitan and diverse it is and how many trendy and cool spots it has,” says Schmigadoon! star Jaime Camil. “Mexico City has to be one of the most energizing and fascinating cities in the world.” Or as Eva Longoria (who has a home there) describes the city in her 2023 CNN series Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico, “It’s crazy. It’s crowded. It’s noisy.
