In search of male desire in a twee world.
Here’s a thesis: with the singular exception of his animated adventure story, Fantastic Mr. Fox, the movies of Wes Anderson are fundamentally about nice, fiery desire. But while a number of his movies explore this through the conventional terrain of the heterosexual relationship and its discontents — The Royal Tenenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom come to mind — others explore more curious expressions of desire, leaving Anderson’s plain and plaintive ladies behind. Shared aesthetic characteristics, from the constantly reprised Cornell boxes to the carefully referenced dead Eastern European novelists, are subject of much ruthless discussion among Anderson acolytes. And, considering Anderson’s diligent cooperation with turning a collection of essays and interviews into a $35 coffee table book, that seems to be the dissection that Anderson embraces. But what are those other, male-centric movies actually about? Most critics, when forced to give something like a serious and meaningful answer, will...

A Los Angeles jury has ordered Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling to pay $17.3 million to actress Robyn Cohen to compensate her for a fire in a West Hollywood apartment. The verdict, which includes $15 million in punitive damages, was handed down Tuesday. Sterling owned the building, and Cohen was one of his tenants. On Sept. 28, 2009, the actress, who has had roles in The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou and Burned, heard a noise. She claims she then stopped reading scripts for the Starz TV series Gravity and went into the hallway, where she discovered smoke.

Because of his incredibly high ranking on the "Awesome" scale, Bill Murray has had the luxury in recent years to act in only movies that he really wants to be in. Luckily for us, a good number of those films have been for director Wes Anderson, playing roles in every one of his films since starring in Rushmore back in 1998 (though his Darjeeling Limited role was criminally short). Apparently, however, artist Casey Weldon wasn't satisfied seeing Murray only playing characters like Herman Blume, Raleigh St. Clair, and Steve Zissou. So he decided to start replacing the other actors. On Weldon's personal blog he has posted six prints of what Bill Murray would look like if he played Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) in Rushmore, Chas, Margot and Ritchie Tenenbaum (Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson) in The Royal Tenenbaums, Anne-Marie (Robyn Cohen) in The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, and Francis...

Pay-for-view channel Starz has announced that Gravity won't be back for a second year. The show completed its run last week after just 10 episodes.
Gravity is a dramatic comedy that follows a group from an eccentric out-patient program for suicide survivors. Co-created by Eric Schaeffer and Jill Franklyn, the cast includes Schaeffer, Ivan Sergei, James Martinez, Krysten Ritter, Rachel Hunter, Robyn Cohen, Seth Numrich, and Ving Rhames.
Starz had high hopes for the series but it just never caught on. The season (now series) finale attracted an invisible 0.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 54,000 viewers. To no surprise, Starz has admitted that neither Gravity nor Party Down will be returning for another round.
In a statement, Stephan Shelanski, Starz' executive VP of programming, said, "After careful consideration, we've decided not to continue on with subsequent seasons...

How to: Submit to an AgentWhen you're ready to submit your headshot and résumé to agents in order to find representation, pick up a copy of Call Sheet, published by Back Stage, to see what agencies are looking for and what kind of performers they represent. Many agencies now have websites, which may even list specific guidelines and the agency's clients. Look at those client rosters and see where you might fit in or help fill an agency's needs.Nancy Moon-Broadstreet, theatrical agent, the Geddes Agency, Los Angeles: "Find out what kind of business they do and where their clients work. If you see someone who has three clients that are kind of like you, then maybe that's not the office to press for. They clearly have the same taste, but you would be fourth on the list, so maybe you should look for somebody who doesn't have anyone like you.
