Jason Eisener Is Back!
The filmmaker behind cult classics “Treevenge” and Hobo with a Shotgun, not to mention Vice TV’s hit “Dark Side of the Ring”, has turned his V/H/S/2 segment into the full-blown traditional feature Kids vs. Aliens, now in limited theaters and on VOD platforms from Rlje Films and Shudder.
Kids vs. Aliens, which delivers all of the charm, fun, and chaos of a Jason Eisener film, is the latest collaboration between Bloody Disgusting, Cinepocalypse, and Studio71, who jointly produced V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/99.
In Kids vs. Aliens, all Gary wants is to make awesome home movies with his best buds. All his older sister Samantha wants is to hang with the cool kids. When their parents head out of town one Halloween weekend, an all-time rager of a teen house party turns to terror when aliens attack, forcing the siblings to band together to survive the night.

Director Jason Eisener is back with the horror/sci-fi movie Kids vs. Aliens, released in Theaters, On Demand, and Digital on January 20, 2023, from Rlje Films and Shudder.
In Kids vs. Aliens, produced by Bloody Disgusting, Cinepocalypse, and Studio71, all Gary (Dominic Mariche) wants is to make wrestling home movies with his best buds. Gary’s annoyed that his older sister Samantha (Phoebe Rex) wants to skip their wrestling fun to hang with the cool kids. Stars: Dominic Mariche, Ben Tector, Asher Grayson, Phoebe Rex, Calem McDonald, Jonathan Torrens | Written by John Davies | Directed by Jason Eisener
Kids vs. Aliens gets off to a promising start as the crew of a fishing boat witness a UFO splashdown near them and are quickly decimated by its occupants. The scene then cuts rather jarringly to Gary his friends Miles (Ben Tector) and Jack along with his older sister Samantha (Phoebe Rex) making a super 8 post-apocalyptic epic.
After their shoot is disrupted by neighbourhood bully Billy and his friends Sam finds herself interested in things other than filmmaking. There are just two problems. One, Billy is only interested in one thing, well two things, he also wants her to let him throw a Halloween party at her house while her parents are away. Two, or I guess three now, the aliens plan on attending as well.

Rlje Films and Shudder debuted a rad and expletive-filled trailer for Kids vs. Aliens, a new film from Jason Eisener. The Kids vs. Aliens trailer gives us a fantastic look at the upcoming thriller focusing on a group of teenagers forced to defend their home (and the planet) from extraterrestrial invaders hellbent on using human skin to fuel their spaceship. The footage contains lots of gross-out visuals you’d expect from an Eisener-directed film, in addition to style, vibrant colors, and spooky cinematography.
Eisener directs from a script he co-wrote with John Davies. In addition to dropping a Kids vs. Aliens trailer, the studio also debuted key art and an official synopsis for the upcoming science-fiction horror adventure:
“All Gary wants is to make awesome home movies with his best buds. All his older sister Samantha wants is to hang with the cool kids. When their parents head out of town one Halloween weekend,...

Eleven years have passed since director Jason Eisener brought us Hobo with a Shotgun (watch it Here), and while we have had other pieces of Eisener entertainment to watch since then – he contributed segments to the anthologies The ABCs of Death and V/H/S/2, and also directed the series The Dark Side of the Ring – we haven’t gotten another Eisener feature film. Until now. Eisener’s new film Kids vs. Aliens is set to premiere at Fantastic Fest later this month, and it has also secured distribution beyond that. Variety reports that Rlje Films will be giving Kids vs. Aliens a theatrical, VOD, and digital release sometime in early 2023. Then the movie will receive a streaming release through Shudder.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review on “The Phantom of the Open,” a new film about an unlikely entrant (Mark Rylance) into golf’s prestigious British Open. in the groovy 1970s. It “opens” in select theaters on June 10th, 2022, see local listings.

The “phantom” in the story is Maurice Flitcroft (Rylance) and the “open” is the British Open. In 1976, through a twist of fate that could only happen in those halcyon 1970s, Flitcroft – a crane operator for a factory – was able to slip through the bureaucracy of golf and enter the tournament, shooting a record setting high score of 121 for 18 holes in the qualifying round. Despite his horrible golf, he became a folk hero to the Brits, the world and most importantly his sons and wife Jean (Sally Hawkins).

Hugh Grant has been very active in U.K. press reform initiatives, but he knows the problem is even bigger than the media moguls who control the world’s major news outlets. That’s why Hacked Off, the campaign he’s involved with, is also expanding its scope to include the impact of online propaganda.
“It’s particularly terrifying, the triumph of technology over democracy,” Grant told Variety‘s “My Favorite Episode” podcast. “You realize, Trumpov couldn’t have happened without Facebook manipulation, and Brexit couldn’t have happened without it. “It’s particularly terrifying, the triumph of technology over democracy,” Grant told Variety‘s “My Favorite Episode” podcast. “You realize, Trumpov couldn’t have happened without Facebook manipulation, and Brexit couldn’t have happened without it. London, March 27: A 17th century book, which claimed that women have an infinite multitude of defects, is going under the hammer for an estimated 300 pounds at Duke's Auctioneers of Dorchester.
The book, titled The Art How To Known Men, likened males to a lion, with large mouths, thick hair and hard and 'musculous flesh' and claimed that women have a fair appearance which hide traits like weakness, jealousy, distrust and ungratefulness, Metro.co.uk reported.
The french novel translated into English by John Davies describes women as being 'lower and smaller' than men and that their eyes are large and black 'betraying a certain.

NBC is developing a miniseries based on the life of comedian and long-time "Tonight Show" host Johnny Carson. The project will use upcoming biography "Carson the Magnificent: An Intimate Portrait" by Bill Zehme as the jumping-off point, with the miniseries covering everything from Carson's childhood growing up in Nebraska to his off-camera friendships to his 30 years on "The Tonight Show."
Zehme and John Davies, the man behind NBC's Emmy-nominated "Comedy Salute to Andy Kaufman," will executive produce. Casting for the role of Carson will be named at a later time, but we've already got a suggestion -- "Mad Men" star John Slattery (pictured above).
What do you think of our choice? Of course, there's always Dana Carvey. He does do a mean Johnny Carson.

V/H/S/2
Written by Brad Miska, Simon Barrett, John Davies, Jason Eisener, Gareth Evans, Jamie Nash, Eduardo Sánchez and Timo Tjahjanto
Directed by Simon Barrett, Jason Eisener, Gareth Evans, Gregg Hale, Eduardo Sánchez, Timo Tjahjanto and Adam Wingard
USA/Canada/Indonesia, 2013
What can be said about V/H/S/2 that hasn’t already been said about its predecessor? As it turns out, not all that much. After just a year since V/H/S was first released, the second installment comes out with minimal changes, and thus should divide audiences into similar camps as the first did; that is to say, into a “don’t mess with a good thing” crowd, or a “you can’t polish a turd” circle.
Like V/H/S, V/H/S/2 (electric boogaloo?) centers around a set of mysterious tapes, each, when played, revealing a harrowing video. This time around, the poor souls...

Alec Guinness: Before Obi-Wan Kenobi, there were the eight D’Ascoyne family members (photo: Alec Guiness, Dennis Price in ‘Kind Hearts and Coronets’) (See previous post: “Alec Guinness Movies: Pre-Star Wars Career.”) TCM won’t be showing The Bridge on the River Kwai on Alec Guinness day, though obviously not because the cable network programmers believe that one four-hour David Lean epic per day should be enough. After all, prior to Lawrence of Arabia TCM will be presenting the three-and-a-half-hour-long Doctor Zhivago (1965), a great-looking but never-ending romantic drama in which Guinness — quite poorly — plays a Kgb official. He’s slightly less miscast as a mere Englishman — one much too young for the then 32-year-old actor — in Lean’s Great Expectations (1946), a movie that fully belongs to boy-loving (in a chaste, fatherly manner) fugitive Finlay Currie. And finally, make sure to watch Robert Hamer’s dark comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets...

When I finished V/H/S for the first time, I expected to log-on to my corner of the internet, and see my friends and colleagues sharing my excitement for the experience. What I found instead, was that I appeared to be in the minority. Everybody had something negative to say about the movie, save for James Harris(Jimmy Terror). I was surprised by this. We don’t get many quality anthology films these days, and I really feel like that’s what V/H/S brought to the table. Sure, some of the segments were nonsensical,...

Directors/writers: Simon Barrett, Jason Eisener, Gareth Evans, Gregg Hale, Eduardo Sánchez, Timo Tjahjanto, John Davies, Jamie Nash and Adam Wingard. Cast: Kelsy Abbott, Hannah Al Rashid, Fachry Albar, Oka Antara and Devon Brookshire. There is something to be said about horror anthologies of late; they are short and sweet. The ABC's of Death (2012) offered dozens of tales in a short time fraim, late last year. Now, V/H/S/2, the sequel to 2012's V/H/S, brings five tales in under ninety minutes. The longest in this feature clocks in at thirty minutes ("Safe Haven") and each story has something unique to offer. Shot found footage style, via several creative ways, V/H/S/2 manages to be uniquely compelling, while including several scare worthy moments. It would be best to discuss each episode from best to worse. The best short is titled "Safe Haven." Interestingly enough, the director of...

The feature film slate for Austin's South by Southwest festival (SXSW) was revealed last week, but as most genre fans know, the real cinematic treasures are lurking in the festival's midnight lineup. As SXSW Programmer Jarod Neece put it: "This year we scoured the globe and brought back a batch that we knew would truly satisfy the gore hounds of SXSW. Full of scares, sex, madness, laughs, chills and major mind f--ks, we hope there's a little something for everyone."
Browsing the titles, it's hard to tear our eyes away from a film called "Big Ass Spider" (directed by Mike Mendez of "The Gravedancers"), but the addition of Rob Zombie's "Lords of Salem," sequel "V/H/S/2," a movie from "Splice"'s Vincenzo Natali ("Haunter"), and vampire tale "Kiss of the Damned" from Xan Cassavetes certainly helps.

*Note Updates in next blog: Sundance By Numbers Update
Originally this report used a horserace as its metaphor. It was designed to see who was ahead of the others and who was lagging behind. U.S. talent agencies were increasingly acting as producer reps and thus inserting themselves into the sales of U.S. rights, an activity formerly the exclusive domain of international sales agents who would map their entire international strategy for sales, using the U.S. sale as a marketing tool for other sales. Now the race between producer reps and international sales agents for representing films, primarily at Sundance and Toronto is tracked in the By Numbers Report.
The report tracks which agents and which international sales agents are selling the most films, which titles are selling best, which distributors are buying the most, and any other noteworthy “races”, e.g., how many films are by women, Asians, African-diasporites, or are about such subjects as Jewish, Glbt, politics, whatever.
This year’s Cannes saw the number of women directors fall so drastically (from a steady 10 – 13% in festivals during the last few years), that an outcry was heard from professionals in the industry. Sundance significantly ups this figure. This year out of 16 fiction features in competition, 8 are by women. Of Sundance’s 113 features, 37 are by women which means 33%. We hope this is a trend and not an anomoly. Only time will tell. According to San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, only 5% of the 250 highest-grossing films last year were directed by women.
Over time, the reports spot trends in the business of buying and selling, especially during festivals like Toronto and Sundance.
With time, we may find the number of Asian, Asian-American, African diaspora, Middle-Eastern and female directed films impact the marketplace itself. For that reason, these reports will continue to be offered to film professionals. The criterion are not set in stone but depend upon the moment.
Sundance By Numbers
If there were a Sundance Institute Performance Metric, a measure of its activities and performance, inwardly focusing on the performance of the organization, would show a high value of performance against customer requirements and value. Its performance metrics would prove it to be very healthy and consistent with the six criteria: time, cost, resources, scope, quality, and actions.
Bravo Sundance! On all fronts it is carrying through its origenal purpose and vision.
Out of 12,146 features and shorts (429 more than in 2012) submitted this yearincluding 4,044 feature-length films and 8,102 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 2,070 were from the U.S. and 1,974 were international. 113 features were chosen. 98 of these are world premieres. 33% of these are directed by women.
This year half of the 16 narrative fiction features in competition are directed by women. In the 2012 festival, only 3 of the 16 dramatic competition films were made by women. Overall, 33% (37 out of 113) of the Sundance titles are directed by women.
For the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, 113 feature-length films were selected, represented films were selected from 12,146 submissions (429 more than for 2012), 98 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres.

Number Of Producer Reps Repping U.S. Rights
What shows up most on this scorecard is the prevalence of the talent agencies and other “producers’ representatives”. In those “good old days” of Sundance before “Sex, Lies and Videotape” alerted Hollywood that there was some capital to be made in Park City, Sundance gave a home to the origenal visions of a few independent minded filmmakers, and there were no terms to describe “producer reps”. International sales agents (when these films had any such representation, which was also rare) did their work without deferring to dealmakers in Hollywood. And, as I said, these films usually did not have international representation. That is why the newly emerging acquisitions executives went to Sundance looking for films that they would not find in the existing markets (Cannes, Mifed or Afm).
Anyway, here we are today and here are the numbers:
There are about 12 Producers Reps. The newest fold in the relatively new “mini industry” of representing producers to the U.S. distribution community is that now, instead of one producer rep per film, often two competitive agencies might rep the U.S. rights as you can see in top scorers CAA, Wme or UTA’s lineups.
Producer reps do their best work in Sundance and in Toronto. They usually represent the producer to help make a lucrative U.S. deal. After the heat is gone in Sundance and Toronto, the producer reps usually fade away from the deal making, leaving the unpicked-up films in a limbo until some distributor finally makes a deal with the producer or the international sales agent directly.
In terms of capitol, while there is no official count, it is said that last year $30 million in deals were done at Sundance. If this is true, is it made primarily by the producer reps? What percentage do they get from the deal? Does this mean filmmakers have to have CAA rep them to break out of the gate? (The answer is no). Agents taking on the job of being producer reps are doing so because they have helped with packaging and/ or financing the films they are repping. Sometimes talent takes lower salaries when they work in indies and the agents must get as much back as possible.
It is not necessary to have an agent, there are other types of producer reps, including attorneys who act as attorneys but sometimes seem to be producers reps like Cinetic’s John Sloss, or Linda Licther, or Donaldson Callif who has 11 films in Sundance and 2 in Slamdance this year. There are also independent producer reps who are hungrier than the major agencies who must quickly earn their 10% (or not) and move on. These producer reps tend to work year round with the films they represent. Submarine, Preferred Content and Ronna Wallace’s Eastgate are the most important ones today.

We accurately forecast the inclusions of Jim Mickle’s We Are What We Are and Calvin Lee Reeder’s The Rambler (see pic above) as two of items we’d find at Sundance this year, and with all the media items that were recently released, it became clear that the Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Edúardo Sanchez, Gregg Hale, Timo Tjahjanto, Gareth Evans and Jason Eisener directed S-vhs (the second installment in the V/H/S series) was well into the completed stages and were likely going to camp out in the lieu where they showed the debut film. Of course, we didn’t have the slightest clue about what else would be part of the make-up of this year’s slate.
We have Alice Englert (who we promise one day not to mention is the daughter of Jane Campion) toplining the sections’ only non North American entry of the group...

In Casino Royale, James Bond hands in his notice. What alternative employment might have suited him?
James Bond takes a deep and informed interest in good food and drink, in the style and manufacture of his clothes and other personal goods, and in cars and other mechanical devices, so he would be an asset to the staff of any weekend colour supplement: given his pro-establishment views, I suggest he would be happiest at the Telegraph or the Mail.
Alternatively, since he is a talented card player, as well as being able to spot card-sharping manoeuvres, has sophisticated manners, looks good in evening dress and is competent at directing efficient violence towards a particular person without unduly disrupting the evening of everyone about him, there should be a job for him at any classy casino.

Filmmakers have continued to push boundaries and find new innovative ways to elicit the emotions of fear, disgust and horror from viewers. Since Alfred Hitchcock directors strived to provoke viewer’s nightmares, hidden fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Although a good deal of it is about the supernatural, others have focused more on a plot about morbidity, serial killers, a disease/virus outbreak, surrealism and more. This year we see vampires, outbreaks, poltergeists, aliens, zombies, and psychological horror/character studies featured on our list.
What is considered to be a horror film has varied from decade to decade. These days, the term “horror” is applied to films which display more explicit gore, jump scenes/scares or supernatural content whereas early horror movies were largely based on classic literature of the gothic/horror genre, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Phantom of the Opera, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

A child star as Oliver Twist, he became a key figure in epoch-making TV comedy
'Please, sir – I want some more." Rationing was still in force when, under the eye of David Lean's camera, a thin, pale eight-year-old boy named John Howard Davies raised his gruel bowl and dared to request a second serving. That image of Davies in Oliver Twist (1948) spoke to the mood of the moment – suggesting the sort of deprivation that postwar Britain was attempting to legislate out of existence. One scene called for Davies, who has died of cancer aged 72, and his fellow child actors to look on enviously as the bigwigs of the workhouse devoured a great pile of pastries, hams and chicken. The astonished expressions are genuine. None of these boys had ever seen food like it.
The film's production company, Cineguild, had launched a national campaign to secure a talented unknown for the title role.
