Animal attack movies have been quite a lucrative genre for a very long time. Obviously, Jaws is the beginning and the end of the conversation but there’s so much more. Grizzlies, whales, dogs, you name it have been the focal point of horror films and will continue to be there with things like Cocaine Bear, The Meg 2, and others infiltrating theaters on a yearly basis. Most of these, of course, are fictional accounts like Stephen King giving us Cujo or any number of other on-screen animals gone wild. There are, however, the rare account that is based on a true story and today is one of those cases. Alligators and crocodiles...

Black Water is one of those rare instances where “based on true events” isn’t just a gratuitous tagline. The 2007 movie (later followed by an unrelated and more polished-looking sequel) is in fact inspired by an event from a few years earlier — near the Finniss River in the Northern Territory of Australia, two people were stranded in a tree after a massive predator killed their friend, then continued to stalk them. While that real-life account and this piece of fiction are substantially different in most respects, they both illustrate the terrifying unpredictability of “salties.”
After spending Christmas vacation with family, Black Water’s three main characters set off on a number of small adventures before returning to their humdrum lives. It’s only when sisters Lee and Grace and Grace’s husband Adam (Andy Rodoreda) go fishing in a mangrove do they encounter one of Australia’s most dangerous residents.

"You know, they'll kill you?" Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an official US trailer for the indie surveillance thriller titled Lone Wolf, from filmmaker Jonathan Ogilvie. In a near-future Melbourne marked by state corruption and constant surveillance, a group of small-time activists hatches a plan to commit a "victimless atrocity". Conrad and Winnie live above a struggling underground bookshop. Most of the film is made up of CCTV footage, and other "found footage", to show us how the government (mis)uses surveillance for their gain and misinterprets what's actually happening. A "political thriller that comments on data privacy, police powers, technology, corruption and crime's many, shady manifestations." Starring Hugo Weaving, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Diana Glenn, Josh McConville, and Chris Bunton. I saw this during IFFR and it's so bad, I was shocked by how dull and uninteresting it was - despite the setup and concept. Tread carefully. Here's the official US trailer...

A group of filmmakers including director Kimberly Townes-Gethers, producer-writer-actor Theo Perkins and executive Kirk Moore have launched Audacity Division, a banner that aims to amplify non-dominant narratives in the Bipoc space.
Its debut project is 14 Days, a short film that follows two ex-lovers (Diarra Kilpatrick and Perkins) who find reconciliation over Zoom conversations at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. The film reinforces the power of therapy and challenges the stigma associated with mental health with Bipoc communities. (See the trailer below.)
Kilpatrick’s credits include writing on The Last O.G. and a role on HBO’s Perry Mason, and is up next in USA Network’s Nash Bridges revival. She also earned an Emmy nomination for the ABC Digital Studios short-form series American Koko. Perkins’ acting credits include Lie to Me, NCIS and Raising the Bar.
The short is helmed by Ad co-founder Townes-Gethers. Perkins and Brandon Scotland are producers and Moore is executive producer. Christian Epps is the Dp. The short was shot on iPhones during the pandemic, and all the cast and crew worked remotely.
The plan is to develop 14 Days into a potential TV series. Audacity Division’s next short is Hands to the Sky, which will highlight the rising epidemic of autism in Bipoc communities in New Jersey, with an eye on developing it into a feature-length film.
“My belief is that in order to transform, change, and liberate, we can not stay still,” said Perkins, also founder and artistic director of the nonprofit Elizabeth Youth Theater Ensemble. “What we accomplished during the filming of 14 Days, the audacity that we had as artists, led to the birth of the collective.”
Here’s the 14 Days trailer:

Channel Seven will soon air the award-winning crime drama Killing Time, starring David Wenham.
Killing Time is the true story of the rise and fall of notorious Melbourne criminal defence lawyer Andrew Fraser. His clients ranged from accused cop killers to the rich and famous including international businessman Alan Bond.
At the top of his game, Fraser commanded a huge salary and lived the dream. But when his cocaine addiction spiralled into a thousand dollar-a-day habit, his judgment became unsound and he crossed the line into the criminal milieu. He was disbarred, discredited, broken financially and his marriage was destroyed.
Caged amongst serial killers and psychopaths, Fraser is forced to reflect on where it all went so wrong, and try to salvage his shattered reputation.

It seems controversy leads to awards. The two big winners at last night.s inaugural Aacta Awards were thriller feature film Snowtown and TV drama series The Slap. Both renowned for their controversial nature, the film and TV series netted four and five gongs respectively.

Director Stephan Elliott took the opportunity to deliver a serve to film critic Jim Schembri at the inaugural Aacta awards at the Sydney Opera House last night. Elliott bit back at Schembri’s review of A Few Best Men, which branded the film ‘unreleasable’. Despite Schembri’s review, the film opened with solid box office takings last weekend. In a lengthy rant, Elliott slammed Schembri for “personal attacks” within the review of the film as he lashed out at people unwilling to support the Australian film industry. Elliott told the audience that his tirade would be removed from Channel Nine’s delayed broadcast of the awards as producers had flagged this, along with several other categories, to be excluded prior to the show.

The low budget Australian film Black Water, about a crocodile terrorising a group of tourists in Northern Australia has just been released in Australia via iTunes. The film, which stars Diana Glenn (Satisfaction, Oyster Farmer) and Maeve Dermody (Beautiful Kate, the upcoming Griff the Invisible), and which was sold in 76 countries and released theatrically in the UK, Mexico, Japan, Poland and Malaysia, was almost impossible to see in an Australian cinema, apart from select screenings. It has been available on DVD for a while now, but has finally hit iTunes, where its target audience may discover this unfairly neglected, innovative gem.
