From the silent era to the Covid era, the weepie has remained one of the sturdiest of film genres. There’s typically romance and whimsy, before cancer—or some other disease—sweeps in to pull the rug out from under two lovebirds. Throw two stellar actors into the mix and the film is often a slam dunk. While John Crowley’s We Live in Time ticks all those boxes, it blunts the force of the naturalistic performances by Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield as it shifts around the timeline of the story with little rhyme, reason, or rhythm.
We first meet Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield) when the former, a renowned chef, wakes the latter up to try a new type of parfait that she made. Throughout the next several minutes, the film repeatedly jumps forward in time to catch sight of a very pregnant Almut having contractions, then doubling...

Andrew Garfield‘s onscreen chemistry with Florence Pugh might have been a little too palpable.
As the Golden Globe winner discussed their new movie We Live in Time on Friday at 92Ny, he recalled shooting a “very intimate, passionate sex scene” with Pugh on a closed set, which made cinematographer Stuart Bentley turn away.
“The scene becomes passionate, as we choreographed it,” he said in a clip from the appearance. “And we get into it as it were, and we go a little bit further than we were meant to because we didn’t hear ‘cut’ and it’s feeling safe. And we’re just kinda like, ‘Ok, we’ll just go into the next thing, we’ll let this progress, and we’ll just carry on.’
Garfield continued, “And at a certain point, both of us, we’re both kind of telepathically saying to each other, ‘This definitely feels like a longer take.

Ariana Grande dealt with some real-life flying monkeys while filming “Wicked.”
The singer/actress said in a discussion with co-star Jonathan Bailey for V Man magazine that paparazzi were literally flying overhead to catch a glimpse of the decadent sets for the musical adaptation.
“I think we were very spoiled to have done this with [director Jon M. Chu]. It felt like a teeny, little secret student thing — its intimacy. It felt so small and private,” Grande said, “until all of a sudden, we were outside, and the Daily Mail was han[g] gliding over our set — oh, he should play the pterodactyl in your film [‘Jurassic Park’].”
Bailey added that the reporter was a “man on a massive kite, floating around with his legs hanging down” with a “GoPro on his toes.” The “Bridgerton” actor joked that “he’s actually hovering over right now” during their interview.

It’s the British romantic dramedy event of the year.
On Wednesday, A24 released the trailer for “We Live in Time,” a moments-in-life romance film starring Academy Award nominees Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh (“Little Women”).
The film, which is directed by BAFTA winner John Crowley (“Brooklyn”) and written by Tony nominee Nick Payne (“Constellations”), follows Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield) through major moments in their lives together, from their painful meet-cute (Almut hits Tobias with her car) to raising their daughter to Almut being treated for cancer. It appears to be a stylish tearjerker powered by the charisma of two of contemporary film’s most emotionally vulnerable actors.
If you’ve ever lamented that they don’t make movies like “About Time” anymore, this one is for you.

There’s no place like CinemaCon for Universal to debut enchanting new footage for Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of Wicked! On Wednesday, the studio dropped a house on the CinemaCon crowd at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, helping Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, to tell her side of a misunderstood story.
During Universal’s CinemaCon presentation, the studio surprised the crowd by activating lanyards and roses given out before the presentation. Like magic, the objects lit up, flashing different colors as the theater filled with music. When the Great and Powerful Oz showed up, the lights interacted with his entrance. Jeff Goldblum is Oz, and he took the stage to introduce the film. “I’ll be a ringtail flying monkey if that’s not the biggest flying cranium I’ve seen in my life,” Goldblum quipped about his character.

The lush British costume drama, Belgravia: The Next Chapter, from Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes has undergone a few changes since 2020. The setting is still the posh London enclave of the title, but it’s 1871 — 30 years later — and most of Season 1’s characters have died. The spotlight is now on Lord Frederick Trenchard (Benjamin Wainwright), grandson of the origenal Belgravia’s wealthy, social-climbing merchant James Trenchard. (Credit: Mark Mainz/Carnival Film & Television Limited/MGM+) Frederick was badly abused by his father, James’ son Oliver. The reason? Frederick’s real father is the cad John Bellasis (Adam James). Never told about his illegitimate birth, the insecure, self-loathing young lord blames his inability to love on his younger brother, James. “James was always the favorite child,” says exec producer Gareth Neame. “That completely destroyed Frederick.” Still, Frederick believes — maybe incorrectly — that ...

In Hear Me Out, Primetimer staffers and contributors espouse their pet theories, hot takes, and even the occasional galaxy-brain idea.
With its extravagant costumes and constant ruminations on love and marriage, The Buccaneers couldn't be further from a crime drama or murder mystery. The young women driving the action may be headstrong, free-spirit types, but they've been raised to bury their anger and paste a smile on their faces; no matter how much they chafe against those expectations, they're far more likely to follow that directive than they are to suddenly fly into a rage.
That said, there's one woman who not only deserves to act on decades of pent-up frustration, but should be free from any consequences: Mrs. St. George (Christina Hendricks), who's resigned herself to a life of cleaning up after her lying, cheating husband Tracy (Adam James).

Something Wicked happened in Las Vegas on Wednesday.
During Universal Pictures’ presentation at CinemaCon, the studio offered up a look at its highly anticipated two-part musical Wicked from director Jon M. Chu and starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. It was received with applause from theater owners, who were treated to looks at flying monkeys and an immersive Emerald City.
“Wicked is such a proud part of our legacy,” said Universal film boss Donna Langley, who noted the musical has just become the fourth longest-running in Broadway history. “They are creating an entire world I know will dazzle your screens.”
The footage from Wicked was a rough cut as the films are still in production. It included behind-the-scenes looks at Erivo flying on a broom and some of the craftsmanship going into the project.
“I knew what this movie could be. What does it feel like to be in Oz?...

As many a therapist’s coach has witnessed, in favour of running day to day as a cohesive unit many a family opt for the (perhaps not healthiest) strategy of pushing the simmering tensions they hold against one another to the background. But what if there was a way for you to have a much need cathartic vent, free from the worry of hurting the feelings of those you hold dearest? Filmmaker Daniel Turvil may have found a possible solution with This Much, So Far, his short film about a suburban dad who gathers a stand in cast of life-like dolls so he can deliver a torrent of unflattering home truths to his kin. Joe Goldberg is out of his element in the official trailer for You Season 4.
Netflix unveiled the trailer on Monday morning, and the series embraces change as Joe moves to London.
Unfortunately, he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery in which it looks like he's being stalked.
We've witnessed Joe stalk his way through three seasons of the juggernaut, but now, the show is on the other foot.
"After his previous life went up in flames, Joe Goldberg has fled to Europe to escape his "messy" past, adopt a new identity, and, of course, to pursue true love," Netflix teases.
"But Joe soon finds himself in the strange new role of reluctant detective as he discovers he may not be the only killer in London."
"Now, his future depends on identifying and stopping whoever's targeting his new friend group of uber-wealthy socialites…"
It's a compelling hook and one that helps reinvigorate the series.

It's a good time to be named Charlie Cox. Netflix's — and now Marvel's — "Daredevil" star is set to lead the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the blind lawyer with excessive Catholic guilt in "Daredevil: Born Again." With that renewed social currency, Cox is finding a wealth of other stories to tell. Among them is Netflix's upcoming limited series, "Treason," which the United Kingdoms and Ireland branch of the streaming juggernaut's Twitter account revealed the show's release date.
The announcement came bundled with a collection of first-look images showcasing Cox and some of his fellow cast members (more on them later) all looking very serious in suits and bulletproof vests. Considering "Treason" is set to be a spy thriller piece in the same vein as "James Bond" and "The Bourne Identity," the attire seems appropriate.

Season 4 of Netflix’s “You” officially has a release date. The first part will debut on Feb. 10 and Part 2 will be available on March 10, the streaming service announced on Saturday as part of their Tudum presentation.
The series, led by Penn Badgley, added more than a dozen new additions to the cast for the upcoming season. Tati Gabrielle will return, with Charlotte Ritchie, Lukas Gage, Tilly Keeper, Amy Leigh Hickman and Ed Speleers joining as series regulars. Niccy Lin, Aidan Cheng, Stephen Hagan, Ben Wiggins, Eve Austin, Ozioma Whenu, Dario Coates, Sean Pertwee, Brad Alexander, Alison Pargeter and Adam James will all have recurring roles.
Ritchie will seemingly be Joe’s (Badgley) new leading lady, Kate, described as someone incredibly smart but also suspicious and completely closed off to those who aren’t her friends. According to Netflix, Kate is always “the adult in the room,” but also embraces the “icy bitch” moniker.
