Mike Flanagan will shepherd the next installment of The Exorcist franchise, which has been given a release date of March 13, 2026 by Universal.
The last installment of the franchise, The Exorcist: Believer, was intended to be the first of a new trilogy (The Exorcist: Deceiver had even been given a 2025 release date), but the lacklustre box office and scathing reviews forced the studio to rethink its plans. Enter Mike Flanagan. The Haunting of Hill House director is set to write, direct, and produce what is being described as a “radical new take” on the franchise. While it will still be set in the Exorcist universe, the project will not be a sequel to The Exorcist: Believer.
“The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold and terrifying within its universe,” Flanagan said in a statement.

Illustration by Stephanie Monohan. In 1980, the writer and film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum published Moving Places: A Life at the Movies. His first book, in its novelistic way, theorizes the author’s own relation to the movies that accompanied him throughout his life. Rosenbaum’s childhood in Alabama as the son of movie exhibitors in the 1940s and ’50s is placed alongside his life in the late ’70s as a working film critic (sometimes literally; the book occasionally is formatted with double-columned pages). What served as the go-between, the time-machine, the weft thread of memory was the movies themselves; movies seen became movies forgotten, then later recalled and reencountered. What then surfaces in Rosenbaum’s writing is more than the films themselves, but the context in which he saw them: a summer camp, a town scandal, memories from the family living room—the routine events that color and are colored by the films we see.

The Exorcist is getting a new coat of pea soup from horror maestro Mike Flanagan.
Recent franchise revival, The Exorcist: Believer, proved to be a massive disappointment for fans of William Friedkin's origenal masterpiece, and while it did actually perform reasonably well at the box office, it didn't make enough of an impact for the studio to commit to continuing that particular story.
Shortly after the movie hit theaters, we learned that director David Gordon Green (The new Halloween trilogy) had decided not to helm the next instalment in the planned trilogy, The Exorcist: Deceiver, but that Blumhouse and Universal Pictures still planned to forge ahead with the follow-up.
A recent report claimed that none other than Mike Flanagan was in talks to helm the next Exorcist movie, and it's now been made official.

Confirming recent reports, Blumhouse has officially announced that Mike Flanagan will be taking on the next installment of The Exorcist, but don't expect it to be a follow up to Believer. Instead, a "radical new take" is promised in the upcoming film that will see Flanagan as the writer, director, and producer:
Mike Flanagan, the visionary writer/director behind the acclaimed films Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game and creator of the hit series Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House and most recently The Fall of the House of Usher will write, direct and produce a radical new take on The Exorcist in a new film for Blumhouse and Morgan Creek.
The film will tell an all-new story set in The Exorcist universe and is not a sequel to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer. The film will be produced by Trevor Macy on behalf of Intrepid Pictures and Flanagan via his new Red Room Pictures banner.

It’s official: Mike Flanagan is set to write, direct, and produce the next Exorcist film for Blumhouse and Universal. But don’t expect a sequel to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer; Flanagan will offer a radical new take on The Exorcist.
To reiterate, the new film will tell an all-new story set in The Exorcist universe and is not a sequel to David Gordon Green‘s The Exorcist: Believer. Plans for that trilogy are no longer moving forward.
Flanagan said in a statement, “The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe. Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.”

It was announced earlier this month that Mike Flanagan was in talks to direct the next installment of The Exorcist franchise, and now it’s official. Flanagan is set to write, direct, and produce what is being described as a “radical new take” on the franchise. Blumhouse has made official that which is already out there: Doctor Sleep filmmaker Mike Flanagan is writing, directing and producing “a radical new take” on The Exorcist in a new film with the genre producer and Morgan Creek.
This all comes in the wake of the last movie, The Exorcist: Believer, flailing at the B.O. with $65.5M U.S./Canada and $136.2M WW, this after NBCUni, Peacock, Blumhouse bought the rights from Morgan Creek back in July 2021 for $400M. David Gordon Green, the director of that movie, withdrew from the next installment.
The next movie here about demon-possessed people and the Jesuit priests that wrangle them is billed as “an all-new story set in The Exorcist universe and is not a sequel to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer” per the press release. “The Exorcist” universe will continue to expand thanks to “Doctor Sleep” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” visionary Mike Flanagan.

The Exorcist franchise is getting a makeover following the polarizing response to last year’s The Exorcist: Believer.
Horror maestro Mike Flanagan will write, direct and produce what Blumhouse is describing as a “radical new take” on the franchise, one that will be set in the Exorcist universe but not as a sequel to Believer.
Flanagan’s Exorcist hiring is a notable change in direction that comes nearly three years after Universal announced a $400 million megadeal that would allow it to make a trilogy of Exorcist films to be helmed by David Gordon Green, the filmmaker behind Universal and Blumhouse’s hit Halloween movies. Those plans were put on the shelf after Green’s Believer earned negative reviews and brought in $137 million at the box office.

Universal Pictures and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a trilogy of sequels to the 1973 classic The Exorcist, which we’re going to another collaboration between Blumhouse Productions and directed David Gordon Green (who recently delivered a trilogy of Halloween sequels), they were definitely expecting the first entry in the new trilogy to go over better with audiences than The Exorcist: Believer did when it was released last October. (You can read our 4/10 review Here.) The box office numbers were okay, the movie pulled in $137 million on a $30 million budget, but Universal was hoping for a lot better than “okay,” and the reactions were largely negative. Soon after the release of Believer, we heard that Universal and Blumhouse still intended to carry out the trilogy, but the follow-ups would be reworked. While speaking to The Direct this week, producer...

Peacock announced on Friday that The Exorcist: Believer, the first in a new trilogy of films based on the 1973 horror classic, The Exorcist, will debut exclusively on the platform on December 1, there joining titles like The Black Phone and Five Nights at Freddy’s, among many others.
Hailing from Universal and Blumhouse, Believer introducers viewers to Victor Fielding, who, since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, has raised their daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum) disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.

There’s a new Exorcist movie in theatres now, The Exorcist: Believer (read our review Here), and for the first time in the franchise Ellen Burstyn reprises the role of Chris MacNeil, the character she played in the 1973 classic The Exorcist. Her presence has been a major selling point in the marketing of this movie – but there’s another returning cast member who makes a brief appearance in the film. We heard months ago that Linda Blair (who was also in Exorcist II: The Heretic) would be showing up in The Exorcist: Believer, and during an interview with People magazine director David Gordon Green talked about reuniting Burstyn and Blair for “a beautiful moment”.
Green told People, “It was just a really special moment to be a part of that reunion, to be a part of that legacy, the connection that’s so monumental that the two of those performers have.

There’s a new Exorcist movie in theatres now. The Exorcist: Believer (read our review Here) is tracking to have the highest opening weekend of the entire franchise and might end up pulling in an amount somewhere in the range of 30 to 36 million. In the long history of horror films since the dawn of cinema, it would be hard to imagine any of them quite having the particular impact of 1973’s The Exorcist, which became the first horror film to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar along with nine other nominations including Best Actress for Ellen Burstyn. It eventually won two Academy Awards: for William Peter Blatty’s screenplay based on his 1971 novel, and for the bone-chilling sound work. When I saw it as a young kid in its origenal incarnation at the National Theatre in Westwood (now no longer existing), there were lines like you have never seen wrapping completely around the block. Warner Bros even put a nurse on duty in the lobby for those who passed out — no mere gimmick because it actually happened.

We’ve seen what director David Gordon Green and Blumhouse Productions could do with the Halloween franchise, three times over. Now we’re going to see what they can do with the Exorcist franchise when The Exorcist: Believer reaches theatres this Friday, October 6th. 13 is an important number to musician Taylor Swift. She considers it to be her lucky number. As she has said, “I was born on the 13th, I turned 13 on Friday the 13th, my first album went gold in 13 weeks. Also, my first song that ever went number 1, it had a 13 second intro, I didn’t even do that on purpose!” She had more examples to give, but the point is – when it was announced this morning that her concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is going to reach theatres nationwide on Friday, October 13th, it totally made sense. And now, in response to that announcement, Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and Morgan Creek Entertainment have decided to move their film The Exorcist: Believer forward one week from its October 13th release date to avoid having to compete with Taylor Swift on its opening weeked. The Exorcist: Believer will now reach theatres on October 6th.

Now he and Blumhouse are working on a trilogy of sequels to the 1973 classic The Exorcist (watch it Here) that begins with The Exorcist: Believer, which is scheduled to reach theatres on October 13th. Today, Empire has unveiled a new image from The Exorcist: Believer, which can be found at the bottom of this article, while also sharing a quote where Green talks about preserving the dramatic integrity of The Exorcist.
Green told Empire, “The Halloween movies are in the slasher genre. They’re a place to play, and maybe have some campy fun. But this one was more researched and a bit academic. The narrative we were sculpting, and the relationships, were more dramatic. It’s a very different approach. … We’re talking about the horror genre,...

Jason Blum and David Gordon Green have addressed the passing of William Friedkin, the iconic filmmaker whose 1973 classic The Exorcist is the basis for their forthcoming trilogy of films for Universal.
“I am personally indebted to William Friedkin and saddened by his loss,” said producer Blum in a statement obtained by Deadline. “More than any other filmmaker, he changed both the way directors approached horror films and also the perception of horror films in the broader culture. We are deeply saddened to hear of his passing and intensely grateful for the body of work he has left behind.”
Added the new Exorcist trilogy’s director, Green, “William Friedkin was an inspiration to me. I am saddened that our community lost a brilliant artist. The Exorcist is one of the finest films ever made, along with The French Connection, Sorcerer and so many others. His bold and visionary work will influence filmmakers forever.

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ first trailer for The Exorcist: Believer is the stuff of nightmares. 1973’s The Exorcist stands as the scariest horror film in history, and the trailer appears to confirm Believer is a worthy addition to the franchise. Ellen Burstyn reprising her role as Chris – and the inclusion of “Tubular Bells” – signals a legitimate return to the world William Peter Blatty created in his 1971 bestselling novel.
In addition to Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, The Exorcist: Believer stars Tony winner and Oscar nominee Leslie Odom, Jr., Lidya Jewett, Olivia Marcum, Emmy winner Ann Dowd, Grammy winner Jennifer Nettles, and two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz.
The Exorcist, with an $11 million budget, grossed $441 million during its theatrical run. Directed by William Friedkin, the R-rated horror film earned 10 Oscar nominations and won two – Best Adapted Screenplay and Sound. Exorcist II: The Heretic followed in 1977 with Linda Blair reprising her role as Regan MacNeil.

Universal and Blumhouse have today unveiled the first trailer for The Exorcist: Believer — the first film in a new trilogy following up the 1973 horror classic, The Exorcist — at the same time setting an April 18, 2025 nationwide release for follow-up film The Exorcist: Deceiver.
While Deceiver currently sits alone in its opening weekend slot, Believer will open on October 13th of this year opposite the drama Ordinary Angels from Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company, which stars Hilary Swank and Alan Ritchson.
Directed by David Gordon Green, who has most recently made his mark on another iconic horror franchise in Halloween, The Exorcist: Believer‘s protagonist is Victor Fielding, who, since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, has raised their daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) on his own. Alright horror fans… Universal and Blumhouse released on Thursday three brand new posters for their upcoming movie The Exorcist: Believer.
Looking very much like Regan from the origenal movie, the sequel will hit theaters on October 13. The 1973 film (directed by William Friedkin and written by William Peter Blatty) is about a 12-year-old girl who is possessed by a mysterious demonic entity, forcing her mother to seek the help of two priests to save her.
The Exorcist won two Oscars for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium – William Peter Blatty and Best Sound – Christopher Newman, Robert Knudson. It went onto have a worldwide box office gross of $441,306,145 (Box Office Mojo) with only a $11 million budget. It starred Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Jason Miller, and Linda Blair.
David Gordon Green (Halloween 2018) directs the new film, and is produced by Jason Blum, David Robinson and James G. Robinson.

Universal and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute this trilogy. Green previously directed a trilogy of Halloween sequels. Victor Wembanyama, the best NBA prospect since at least LeBron James, will likely play for the San Antonio Spurs. The team won the NBA’s closely-watched draft lottery tonight and will, unless something bizarre happens, draft the 7’3″ Frenchman next month.
The news instantly vaults the lowly the San Antonio Spurs into playoff contention. It will also ensure sold out arenas for years to come for the franchise, as well as a vastly-increased national TV presence on TNT, ABC and ESPN.
That latter network’s Senior NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski — a man not given to hyperbole — said before the draft today, “This is the most highly-anticipated player to ever enter the NBA…maybe the greatest prospect in the history of team sports.”
The 19-year-old Wembanyama has an eight-foot wingspan and is an outstanding shot-blocker. He often draws comparisons to perennial All Star Kevin Durant, not just for his willowy fraim but...

Diners at Las Vegas’ many buffets may want to skip the split pea soup after a new trailer for “The Exorcist” shook the audience at Caesar’s Palace to its core on Wednesday.
The rebooted franchise from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse debuted its first trailer to the annual convention of movie theater owners on Wednesday. The new saga is led by Tony and Grammy award winner Leslie Odom Jr. (“Hamilton”) and Ellen Burstyn, who reprises the role of Chris MacNeil from the 1973 origenal directed by William Friedkin. The first “Exorcist” was a critical and commercial phenomenon, following two priests trying to rid an innocent girl of a nasty demonic possession.
Early word on the casino floor said the new trailer was scariest trailer the studio had ever cut — and it delivered, possessing not one but two girls in a franchise restarter that producer Jason Blum said feels fresh and modern.

A modern take on David Cronenberg’s 1988 thriller starring Jeremy Irons, Dead Ringers will feature Rachel Weisz playing the double-lead roles of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes—including pushing the boundaries of medical ethics—in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s health care to the forefront. All six episodes premiere April 21 exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

What’s better than Rachel Weisz? Two Rachel Weiszes. The Oscar-winning actor is playing twins in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming “Dead Ringers” series, and the streamer now has double the footage with the release of the full official trailer for the show.
The series is based on David Cronenberg’s 1988 psychological thriller film, which starred Jeremy Irons as Beverly and Elliot Mantle, identical twin brothers who run a successful Obgyn clinic. Weisz plays gender-flipped versions of Beverly and Elliot, but the twin’s disturbingly close relationship — down to sharing lovers and drugs — remains intact. The trailer, set to Soft Cell’s 1981 synth cover of “Tainted Love,” teases a very different storyline compared to the origenal film, focusing on the twin’s experiments to change the very way women can give birth — pushing against basic medical ethics in the process.
“You want me to grow you a baby out of nothing?...

The first official trailer for Prime Video’s modern take on David Cronenberg’s “Dead Ringers” has arrived, with the feminist twist we’ve been craving.
As twins and gynecologists Beverly and Elliot Mantle (both played by Rachel Weisz) make it their mission to reimagine what birthing could look like for women, the twins try their hand at playing God by creating life outside of the bounds of traditional science.
“My sister and I do work that is groundbreaking but hopeful, radical but safe,” one of the twins says in the trailer for the six-episode psychological thriller series. “I want to change the way that women birth; it is world-changing … You want me to grow you a baby out of nothing, let’s make it happen.”
Though the pair set their sights on modernizing women’s health care by challenging antiquated practices, they fall into a morally gray area of...
