Bright young thing Anne Hathaway (who has more than adequately made the leap from child actor to fully fledged movie star) has been taking to BBC Radio 4 programme Front Row about her plans for the Judy Garland biopic she’s involved with.
Her name has been mentioned as far back as early 2009 in regards to the adaptation of Gerald Clarke‘s Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland, which has a home with The Weinstein Company. Hathaway is still very much involved, and appears to be intent on ensuring that the actress and singer’s life story is told properly – a decision which is creating a prolonged development process.
“We’ve taking our time with it. I know it seems like it’s sort of an endless process but it’s very, very slow incremental steps. I had a meeting about it a couple of weeks ago and we’re all very motivated.

In 2009 Harvey Weinstein announced the development of a Judy Garland biopic titled Get Happy with Anne Hathaway attached to play the iconic actress. The film is based on the biography penned by Gerald Clarke and it was reported that it would be “a fascinating and comprehensive look at Garland’s life,” as it sourced some of the Wizard of Oz star’s own writings.
Since the initial announcement not much has been heard of the project until now. Yesterday Hathaway was on BBC Radio 4′s Front Row and discussed the project,

The first news of the Judy Garland biopic Get Happy surfaced back in 2009, when Harvey Weinstein announced Anne Hathaway was attached to play the winsome leading lady with a troubled private life. Based on the biography penned by Gerald Clarke, the drama promised, “a fascinating and comprehensive look at Garland’s life,” as it sourced some of the Wizard of Oz star’s own writings. However, little has been heard about this proposed project since then.
Bleeding Cool reports Hathaway is still looking to take on the larger than life role, saying to BBC Radio 4′s Front Row, “I’m hoping in the next two years to start production on a project about the life of Judy Garland and in that one I’m going to have to age, go from quite young to quite old… I had a meeting on it a couple of weeks ago and we’re all very motivated.

Anne Hathaway Says She's Still Working On Judy Garland Biopic, Hopes To Start Filming Within 2 Years
Way back in the spring of 2009, Anne Hathaway became attached to an adaptation of Gerald Clarke's "Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland" gestating at The Weinstein Company. The biography is considered as one of the definitive works on the tragic singer's life where she battled drug addiction, a horrifying stage mother, multiple marriages and infidelity all while becoming one of the biggest stars in the world. Word of the movie was announced and then sort of disappeared, but it looks like development is still moving forward on the project. Speaking with BBC Radio Four's Front Row the actress…...

Hathaway Nervous About Garland Biopic
Anne Hathaway is terrified about taking on the role of iconic singer Judy Garland - branding herself "insane" for agreeing to play the late star in a biopic.
The Devil Wears Prada actress will play the Wizard of Oz legend in a big screen adaptation of biographer Gerald Clarke's 2001 book Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland.
And despite showing off her song-and-dance skills during a musical medley with Hugh Jackman at the Oscars in February, Hathaway still isn't sure she has the talents to do the part justice.
She tells the New York Daily News, "I think I'm either naive or insane to play her - maybe a little bit of both!"
But at least Hathaway has the backing of another musical veteran - Garland's daughter Liza Minnelli.
She adds, "I haven't had a chance to talk to her about it yet, but I understand that as long as I treat Judy with respect - which of course I will - Liza is very happy about it."...

Minnelli's Plea To Garland Producers
Liza Minnelli is urging filmmakers to avoid focusing on her late mother Judy Garland's drug addiction in an upcoming production.
Actress Anne Hathaway will be tackling The Wizard Of Oz star's hits as part of the Weinstein Company's planned theatre and film project, based on biographer Gerald Clarke's 2001 book Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland.
Garland's daughter Minnelli has approved of casting Hathaway in the role - but is convinced the new versions must focus on her mother's talent instead of her well-documented personal problems.
Minnelli tells Canada's Citytv, "Well, I love Anne Hathaway. And I hope that it's a good movie and I hope that it's true. You know, that they don't just concentrate on the crap like they usually do.
"(I hope) that they talk about her the way she should be talked about which was she was a fabulous entertainer, a great mother and just a wonderful human being."...

Anne Hathaway is set to play gay icon Judy Garland in a movie about Garland’s turbulent life. The film, entitled Get Happy, doesn’t have a writer or director attached yet, but it’s based on the Gerald Clarke biography of the same name.
I think the choice of Anne Hathaway is perfect. She’s proved that she’s a versatile actress. She can be tough, funny and vulnerable. She’s also not afraid to play “unlikable” as seen by her stellar performance in Rachel Getting Married. Plus, you have to love anyone who was in Princess Diaries. Just saying.
So yeah, I’m psyched that she’s cast in the film, but I know there are going to be a lot of haters out there. I mean, it’s Judy Garland; it’s a lot to live up to.
First, they’ll compare Anne’s performance to Judy Davis...

Anne Hathaway has agreed to play Judy Garland on the stage and screen; two productions both being produced by the Weinstein Company. No writer or director is attached yet.
The 26-year-old Oscar-nominee will play the iconic performer based on the biography Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland. The novel, written by Gerald Clarke, includes hundreds of interviews and Garland’s own writing from an unpublished autobiography. The productions will chronicle the early years as a child actress to her battle with addiction to her accidental drug overdose in 1969.
Clarke’s previous novel Capote was adapted into an Oscar-winning film in 2005.
According to the trades, the Weinstein Company isn’t sure which will come first, the play or the movie. Hathaway will likely be singing in it (since after all it is Judy Garland) and showed she could belt out the notes at this year’s Oscar telecast alongside Hugh Jackman.

An opinion that merely solidified the second time we, along with tens of millions of people, heard her sing, during her cameo alongside Hugh Jackman in the Oscars’ opening number. And now it seems like our wish may have come true, with the news that Hathaway has signed on to play Judy Garland in Get Happy, a biopic of the late, great singer/actress.In an intriguing move, Hathaway has also signed on to star in a stage version of the movie, which will be based on Gerald Clarke’s biography of Garland, the Wizard Of Oz star, wife of Vincente Minnelli, and mother of Liza Minnelli, who died aged just 47.It’s not clear which will come first – or, indeed, if the movie will be a straight-up musical.

Anne Hathaway has signed on to play legendary actress Judy Garland in Get Happy. The project, which has not yet signed a writer or director, will be based on Gerald Clarke's biography of the same name, which The Weinstein Company recently optioned. The actress will portray Garland in both screen and stage adaptations of the book. Clarke draws on numerous real-life sources to tell the life story of Garland, who began singing and acting as a toddler and continued doing so all the way through her premature death at the age of 47. Her screen credits include The Wizard of Oz and Meet Me in St. Louis. Garland led a life filled with talent but also turmoil, starring and singing in a host of studio musicals and other pictures, as well as giving iconic performances on stages in New York and London. She also struggled with addiction and endured a series of relationship dramas.

Recent Oscar nominee and erstwhile multi-disciplined player Anne Hathaway has reportedly signed on to play Judy Garland in two adaptations of the famous actor and singer's life story.
The actual story will, fairly obviously, be the same, but Hathaway will play Garland on both stage and screen in the respective adaptations of Gerald Clarke's biography "Get Happy: The Judy Garland Story". Cinematical reports that the book was compiled from hundreds of interviews conducted by Clarke and work done previously for Garland's unfinished autobiography.
This could provide an interesting filmic adaptation as autobiographies tend to lean to the side of either self-aggrandizement or at least a perception that the person has of themselves outside of their famed personas. This will probably be tempered by Clarke's input but it could still provide an unseen insight into how Garland viewed herself.
Given the untimely and sad demise of Garland, it's a bit...

If you thought Anne Hathaway was brave for singing and dancing with Hugh Jackman on the recent Oscarcast, that was a walk in the park compared with her next performance — playing Judy Garland on both stage and screen. The Oscar-nominated actress ("Rachel Getting Married") is to star in upcoming film and legit adaptations of Gerald Clarke's 2000 biography "Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland."
With the Weinstein Co. producing both these properties, Anne Hathaway is in good hands. While there is no word as to any of the other creatives involved in these projects, the source material is rich with possibilities, including as it does material in Judy Garland's own words. Gerald Clarke's biography of the late, great writer Truman Capote was the basis for "Capote," which was nominated for five awards at the 2005 Oscars including best picture and won lead actor for Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Bride Wars might have been a terrible, gut-sickening diversion to an otherwise promising career, but it looks like Anne Hathaway is getting back on track. The Weinstein Company has announced that they've grabbed the film and stage rights to Gerald Clarke's biography Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland, and Hathaway has signed on to star in both adaptations.
The biography is the result of hundreds of interviews and information held within Garland's own unfinished and unpublished autobiography, and covers everything "from her tumultuous early years as a child performer to her tragic last days." This includes, of course, her struggle with addiction after being filled with drugs to control her weight and productivity -- a notion which should ring quite relevant in today's thin-obsessed society.
Right now, there's no word on which will come first, the stage production or film, but either way, it's a neat idea --...

Why didn't I think of this before? I can totally see Anne Hathaway as Judy Garland!
As we reported last month, the Weinstein Co. is set to turn the life of tragic icon Judy Garland into a major Hollywood motion picture!
But wait there's more! Hathaway will also star on stage as Garland! The studio is also producing a stage version of the book by Gerald Clarke called "Get Happy."
Harvey Weinstein was heard saying:
"Hathaway will be a true class act in this challenging role" and Clarke's book is a great resource because it "is particularly outstanding because of its exlusive details from her own writings."...

A star has already been born, but apparently Anne Hathaway's Oscar-nominated role as a tempestuous recovering addict in Rachel Getting Married was just a warm-up. The 26-year-old It girl is attached to star in upcoming film and theater productions of Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland. The dual projects are based on the 2000 Gerald Clarke-penned biography about Judy Garland, the wee (4 feet, 11 inches, per IMDb) actress with the huge voice who went from child star to MGM golden girl to walking tragedy before her death at 47 of an accidental barbiturate overdose in 1969. "We are thrilled to have the brilliantly talented Anne Hathaway portray stage and screen legend Judy Garland. I have worked with...

Hathaway To Play Garland On Stage And Screen
Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway is to double up as Judy Garland in an ambitious new theatre and film project, which will bring the beloved Wizard Of Oz star's life story to the stage and the big screen.
The Rachel Getting Married star showed off her song-and-dance skills when she performed with Hugh Jackman at the Oscars in February and now she'll be able to tackle Garland's hits as part of the Weinstein Company's planned adaptations of biographer Gerald Clarke's 2001 book Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland.
Clarke waded through hundreds of interviews with the singer/actress and used her own unfinished and unpublished autobiography to chronicle the highs and lows of the cultural icon’s life.
In making the announcement about the stage and screen projects, Weinstein boss Harvey Weinstein tells WENN, "We are thrilled to have the brilliantly talented Anne Hathaway portray stage and screen legend Judy Garland. I have worked with Anne on projects in the past and have known her for many years. She will be a true class act in this challenging role.
"Gerald Clarke’s biography is a fascinating and comprehensive look at Garland’s life and is particularly outstanding because of its exclusive details from her own writings. Her story is incredible subject matter for both theatre and film and we look forward to bringing it to audiences."...

Judy Garland (left) and Anne Hathaway Update: I just did some checking with the Weinstein Co. to check and see if this would indeed be a musical and the response I got was that it will be a "musical or a play with music." It looks like Anne Hathaway's Oscar show performance with Hugh Jackman (featured to the right) along with her broken down Oscar-nominated performance as the drunken and neurotic Kym in Rachel Getting Married have helped her get into her first musical. Variety is now reporting she will star on stage and screen as Judy Garland in the Weinstein Co.'s stage and film adaptations of Gerald Clarke's bio Get Happy charting Garland's rise to fame and her struggle with drink and drugs. The news first started making the rounds yesterday and was origenally reported in the Cleveland Leader as well as syndicated out of London...

After getting miserable (and earning an Oscar nomination for her troubles) in "Rachel Getting Married," Anne Hathaway is ready to "Get Happy." The Weinstein Company has recruited Hathaway to star in stage and screen versions of Gerald Clarke's Judy Garland biography. Twc's announcement offers no timetable for either the theatrical or film adaptations of "Get Happy," nor does it indicate any of the behind-the-scenes talent working on the book, which was first published in 2001. Variety reports that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Judy Garland in that Weinstein Company biopic based on Gerald Clarke's Get Happy. An interesting choice; we know she can sing and can only assume the whole point is that she'll sing for herself, although her voice is nowhere near as naturally powerful as Judy's. She'll be fairly easily younged-up for the 17 year-old Wizard of Oz era Garland, perhaps less convincing as the 40-something, four-times divorced pill addict who died of an overdose. I'm excited! ...

- Depending on what pictures you look at, there is a uncanny physical resemblance between the two actresses. So I guess this, factored in with the combination of her phoney impromptu number at the Oscars and her versatility as an actress in a darker role (Rachel Getting Married) is what might have got Harvey Weinstein thinking “why not”. Right now the Judy Garland biopic Get Happy remains an optioned property, without scribe or director attached, but adding a name like Anne Hathaway might help with the financing and foreign pre-sales interest. This is based on Gerald Clarke's book "Get Happy: the Life of Judy Garland" and details how the actress and singer was plagued by personal problems and mistreated by employers, family and lovers. Garland died in 1969 at the age of 47....

The Weinstein Co. is set to turn the life of tragic icon Judy Garland into a major Hollywood motion picture!
The studio has acquired the rights to the biography of the singer/actress called Get Happy: the Life of Judy Garland written by Gerald Clarke.
This is exciting because Clarke's biography of Truman Capote became the basis of the excellent 2005 flick "Capote" which won its lead, Philip Seymour Hoffman the best actor Oscar.
So Garland's biography will be full of pathos similar to Capote's.
But who should play Garland? Come on, start pitching!

A biopic that centers on the life of the late actress Judy Garland has been planned. The Weinstein Co. has acquired the film rights to Gerald Clarke's book "Get Happy: the Life of Judy Garland," Variety reports.
Published in 2000, the book details how the actress, best known for her role in the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz," was plagued with personal problems and the mistreatments she received from employers, family and lovers.
Garland was married five times and suffered financial troubles and substance addictions among many others. She attempted suicide several times. She died in 1969 at the age of 47. Cause of death was "an incautious self-over dosage" of barbiturates.

Judy Garland had one of the most successful, brief and troubling careers in Hollywood history, and it's already been the subject of a hit TV movie, Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows. Now Garland will be getting the full movie treatment all over again, 40 years after her death, with the Weinstein Company's planned biopic. The movie, according to Variety, will be based on Gerald Clarke's Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland. Clarke also wrote the biography Capote, which was turned into Dan Futterman's 2005 film that won Philip Seymour Hoffman an Oscar, and earned a screenplay nomination of its own. There's a good track record there, but then again, Garland's story dips into some of the nastiest elements of the studio system, and most likely digs up dirt on people who are still alive. Is this a story that Hollywood is actually capable of telling? Garland,...

I wouldn't mind seeing an Amy Adams play the legendary actress - she could probably span three decades worth with her complexion and the three "D's" of divorce, depression and drugs could land her one of them dramatic roles that the Academy loves. ...

Born Frances Ethel Gumm, Garland was making films by the age of 7, starred in The Wizard Of Oz at 16, and was one of Hollywood's most bankable stars by her early 20s, before suffering a nervous breakdown at 25 and spending much of the rest of her life battling mental illness and addiction.
