UFC lightweight Drew Dober reassured fans following a doctor-stoppage loss due to a severe facial laceration at UFC Fight Night in Denver.
The 35-year-old veteran faced Brazilian Jean Silva in a main card bout at Ball Arena. Silva’s precise striking proved challenging for Dober throughout the contest.
As the second round concluded, a significant cut above Dober’s right eye became increasingly concerning. Less than two minutes into the third round, referee Herb Dean called for an official timeout. The cage-side physician then deemed Dober unfit to continue, resulting in a technical knockout victory for Silva.
Despite the loss, Dober demonstrated remarkable resilience. He withstood punishing blows from Silva, including a spinning back elbow near the end of the second round that visibly stunned the American fighter.

Ufc 169 was to be held in Rio De Janeiro at the Hsbc arena. With many hometown fighters it was set to be an excellent pay per view culminating in an interesting fight for the featherweight championship between Jose Aldo and The Korean Zombie. Also on the card we would see the Brazilian Lyoto Machida take on Phil Davis in a unofficial number one contenders match up. Here is my report of the main card at Ufc 163.
First Match:
John Lineker vs. Jose Maria. Winner: John Lineker

John Lineker looked to claim another victory in his home country of Brazil against fellow compatriot and last minute replacement Jose Maria. Jose Maria had not been beaten since 2008 whilst Lineker has won 16 of his last 17 fights. Whoa.
The first round of the Ufc on Fuel TV 8 main event was absolute madness. Two men entered the cage and for that first 300 seconds, they went completely insane. There was not a single pause for strategy or caution or even civility. Two men entered that octagon bent on sheer destruction. Primal. Savage. Visceral. It was simply awe inspiring … particularly after an endless row of decisions.
Mark Hunt (9-7) vs. Stefan Struve (25-6), Hw: There was an extreme possibility that this match-up would end in the same fashion as Lavar Johnson vs. Brendan Schaub. Mark Hunt is a classic striker with an iron jaw and redunkulous power, but he’s on his back more often than a granny with a bad hip. He’s also a sucker for submissions. His opponent, the Dutch giant, has a high level submission game.
Here’s the difference between Struve and Schaub: Struve is secretly crazy.

Monster movies and wrestling. Two of my favourite concepts that come together in the cheesy fight-flick that is Monster Brawl… Of course pitting monster vs. monster is nothing new, its an age-old concept in Hollywood, from the 40s and Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman and House of Frankenstein to modern-day efforts such as 2004′s Van Helsing, but throwing wrestling into the mix has – until now – been more of a standard of Mexican cinema. In fact Monster Brawl has (besides feeling like a Halloween episode of WWE Raw) a lot more in common with the Mexican luchador films of El Santo than anything Hollywood has ever produced.

Remember when you were a kid and you would dream of your favorite monsters battling each other? You would sit in school daydreaming about what it would be like to see Frankenstein's Monster battle the Werewolf or the Mummy get into hand-to-hand combat with the Creature from the Black Lagoon. This is something you no longer have to imagine. Thanks to Image Entertainment, Monster Brawl takes those very childhood fantasies and puts them on screen.
The movie is simple to describe. You take all your favorite horror movie creatures and throw them in a wrestling ring to battle it out with each other to the death. Throw in some intro sequences to give each monster's backstory and some emcees dishing witty retorts back and forth and you've got a film that should satisfy both horror fans and wrestling fans.
If you watch professional wrestling, you know exactly what to expect from this film.

Somewhere in the middle of all of the holiday madness of 2011, The Foywonder reported that Monster Brawl (review here) would be hitting DVD in March of this year. As a quick follow-up to that tasty nugget of news, the official artwork has come our way! Dig it!
Jesse T. Cook’s comically horrific take on monstermania boasts familiar wrestling personalities like “Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart, Kevin Nash, Robert Maillet (aka Kurrgan), and mixed martial arts referee Herb Dean as well as comedian Dave Foley and the unmistakable voice of Lance Henriksen as the show’s narrator.
But mostly it’s about eight very familiar monster archetypes (Cyclops, Mummy, Lady Vampire, Zombie Man, Witch Bitch, Swamp Gut, Werewolf, Frankenstein) settling their scores in the squared circle.
Now word on the extras yet. Look for the flick on DVD and Blu-ray on March 27 DVD ($27.97) and Blu-ray ($29.97).

Damn fine news, my friends. Damn fine news, indeed. I’ve been anxiously waiting for director Jesse T. Cook’s horror/comedy “Monster Brawl” to find its way onto DVD and/or Blu-ray for some time now, so I’m quite pleased that the film is finally headed to home video next year. Genre-friendly Image Entertainment will handle distribution duties in North America, so expect them to treat the flick with some respect. I am pumped. Can’t remember this one? It seems only appropriate that with next year’s Wrestlemania slated for April Fool’s Day, a motion picture like Monster Brawl, starring several personalities from the world of professional wrestling that is patterned after a wrestling pay-per-view but with monsters stepping into a ring to fight it out, would get released on DVD the same week.
Jesse T. Monster Brawl
Director/writer: Jesse T. Cook
Country: Canada
Running Time: 85 mins
Certificate: 18
Starring: Dave Foley, Art Hindle, Robert Maillet, Kevin Nash, Jimmy Hart, Herb Dean
The writer and director of 2008's horror flick Scarce, Jesse T. Cook, revisits the genre in his latest film Monster Brawl. “The time will come when monsters shape the futures of all” begins a suitably jocular voice-over that introduces us to the “most highly-anticipated extreme sport ever”. Making a horror enthusiast's hypothetical pub chat a reality, Cook pits some of the genre's most celebrated figures against each other in the wrestling ring.
Eight of the most powerful ghouls of all time from all four corners of the earth come together and are structured into “two conferences” with middle and heavy weight “monsters” and “creatures”, such as “Witch Bitch”. An American TV show set-up is quickly established with presenter, Buzz Chambers hosting from a secret cemetery location.

Day two of Dedfest Victoria hosted Jesse T. Cook's Monster Brawl followed by Fulci's Zombie. Organizer Ira Hunter continued to give out the schwag in generous fashion. The film festival ended with a few more zombies in day two, with Monster Brawl offering a wide collection of fighting creatures. The characters were diverse, but this film is much like watching an episode of WWE on which the film is loosely based. Even actors from wrestling entertainment lampoon in the film e.g. Kevin Nash. Overall, this is a fun film; however, Monster Brawl suffers from some pacing issues and maybe even some plot holes.
This is a fighting tournament that has brought eight of the deadliest creatures together for a series of Deathmatches. You can choose who to root for amongst: zombie man (Rico Montana), frankenstein (Robert Maillet), werewolf (Rj Skinner), swamp gut (Jason David Brown...

Monster Brawl
Directed by Jesse T. Cook
Written by Jesse T. Cook
2011, Canada
Last night, writer/director Jesse T. Cook had the honour of being the first Canadian filmmaker to open the Toronto After Dark Film Festival with his smackdown horror-comedy Monster Brawl.
In the spirit of pay-per-view wrestling and the Mortal Kombat video game, Monster Brawl brings some of the most iconic monsters together for no other reason than to bludgeon them in the ring. In addition to Frankenstein and the Wolfman, the brawlers include: the Mummy, Zombie Man, Cyclops, Lady Vampire, Swamp Gut and Witch Bitch — all of whom harbour grudges and talk smack to the camera.
To say that Monster Brawl is a fanboy’s dream come true is an understatement. Cook guarantees his film’s mass appeal simply by fusing together several popular genres: horror, wrestling and gaming. Moreover, he assembles an eclectic cast to further...

On paper, Monster Brawl works. Model your movie after pay per view wrestling events and use monsters as the combatants. Mix well known monsters like Frankenstein, Werewolf and Mummy with creative characters like Witch Bitch and Swamp Gut then pit them against each other, tournament style, in a wrestling ring in the middle of a cemetery. Add to the mix the gravelly narration and Mortal Kombat quips of Lance Henriksen. Insert cameos by WWE legends Jimmy Hart and Kevin Nash, and Ufc referee Herb Dean, and this should have awesomeness written all over it. Sadly, it all comes across rather flat and aimless. Here is what I know about the world of 'Professional Wrestling'. It is a spectacle. When done well events unfold that build up tension, excitement and anticipation to...

Monster Brawl
Written and Directed by Jesse T. Cook
(2011) Canada
Fantasia imdb
It is only too appropriate that the World Premiere of Monster Brawl at Fantasia was presented by Tony Timpone, former editor of Fangoria Magazine, because if any film could be described as inspired by arguments from Fangoria it’s Monster Brawl. Or even arguments made before Fangoria even existed. The spiritual predecessor to virtually all genre publications was Forry Ackerman’s Famous Monsters of Filmland and one of the eternal arguments that raged in that publication (and its heirs) has always been: Which monster is stronger? Which monster is better? Which monster would win in a fight?
That is a question that has sold movie tickets since 1943 when Universal put out Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man and continues to sell movie tickets to this day, witness two Aliens vs. Predator films, a Freddy vs. Jason film and even a Freddy vs. Jason vs.

Writer/director Jesse Thomas Cook’s upcoming horror/comedy Monster Brawl has "guilty pleasure" written all over it. The premise is simple. Combine old school monsters then mix it with over-the-top wrestling and add a cast that includes Dave Foley, Art Hindle, Lance Henriksen, Jimmy Hart, and Kevin Nash. Yes, wrestlers mixed with actors. Who would have thunk it?...

The premise is so brutally simple and potentially awesome that I can’t believe that someone hasn’t tackle the subject in this manner before. Writer/director Jesse Thomas Cook’s upcoming horror/comedy “Monster Brawl” will attempt to combine monsters, wrestling, and laughs, a feat which may prove fruitful since the picture in question features former “Kids in the Hall” alumni Dave Foley. Did I mention that Art Hindle, Lance Henriksen, Jimmy Hart, and Kevin Nash are also on-board for all these monster-related shenanigans? I can barely contain my frothing cinematic excitement. Who doesn't like a good monster mash? The prospect of two behemoths battling it out in very violent ways is irresistible to horror fans and serves as catnip to me personally. So we're pretty happy to bring you the first poster and stills from the upcoming two-fisted creature feature Monster Brawl!
The cast for Monster Brawl includes the likes of comedian Dave Foley, the incomparable Lance Henriksen, wrestler/actor Kevin Nash, legendary wrestling manager "Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart, Mma referee Herb Dean, and Robert Maillet, a towering former WWE wrestler known then as "Kurrgan" but now probably more recognizable as the giant that kicked Robert Downey, Jr.'s butt in the boatyard battle in Sherlock Holmes.
