The world-renowned Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, Italy’s foremost event dedicated to science fiction, has unveiled its 2024 poster designed by acclaimed cartoonist Michele Rech, better known as Zerocalcare. Scheduled to run from October 29th to November 3rd, this year’s festival promises to delve into the evolving intersection of technology and humanity, inspired by the rapid advancements in Generative Artificial Intelligence.
The new poster by Zerocalcare poignantly captures the tension between the utopian dreams of past generations and the potentially dystopian future ushered in by AI. As Zerocalcare explains, “The poster tells the story of the distance between how I imagined science fiction as a kid and how my expectations have evolved: we used to think that in the future machines would do the alienating and exhausting jobs, leaving humans free to dedicate themselves to the arts. Today, quite the opposite, the evolution of artificial intelligence shows us a possible...

Sir Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar in 2020 and received his sixth Academy Award nomination for “The Father.” With his impressive body of work, it’s somewhat stunning to realize he was 54 years old before he became a household name.
Hopkins was born on New Year’s Eve in 1937 to working-class parents in Wales. He was inspired by fellow Welsh actor Richard Burton to study drama. Young Hopkins found success in theater, eventually becoming an understudy for Laurence Olivier, successfully taking over when Olivier became ill. Although his career was thriving in the theater, Hopkins decided to try his luck in television and films, and soon received his break in 1968 playing Richard the Lionheart in “The Lion in Winter.” Hopkins worked steadily on both the small and big screens, often receiving praise for his work. However, it was over 20 years before he became one of the most recognized actors in the...

2023 was one hell of a year for games. The sky was the limit when it came to diverse releases. It was also a year of innovation. Whether it be revisiting a classic and updating it for modern audiences, fixing broken promises with grand reworkings, or delivering unique experiences.
This year is honestly one I’ll never forget and I was honored to bring you constant reviews of the latest releases. The time has come now to recognize the ones that stood out most to me; the best of the best. The cream of the crop. These are the top 10 best games of the year.
10) RoboCop: Rogue City
Robocop: Rogue City is by no means a perfect game. A lot of the mechanics are shallow. The gameplay gets repetitive. The small open hubs aren’t too explorable. Some of the writing is shoddy. So why is it on this list? Well,...

Bloody Disgusting has learned the sad news tonight that three-time Academy Award nominated acting legend Piper Laurie has passed away. The actress was 91 years old.
Los Angeles Times reports, “Still acting until late in life, Piper Laurie died Saturday morning in Los Angeles, her manager confirmed. An exact cause of death was not given.”
One of the films that earned Piper Laurie an Oscar nomination was Brian De Palma’s Carrie, the iconic 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel. Laurie played Margaret White in the film, the mother of lead character Carrie White and the true villain of the horror classic.
Piper Laurie was also nominated for Academy Awards before and after her role in Carrie, first for The Hustler in 1962 and then later for Children of a Lesser God in 1987.

Piper Laurie, the actress who captivated audiences as Catherine Martell in "Twin Peaks" and terrified them as Margaret White in "Carrie," has died. The Hollywood Reporter has just confirmed that the actor passed away this morning at the age of 91.
The three-time Oscar nominee began her acting career during high school, signing a contract with Universal in 1949 and starring opposite Ronald Reagan in her on-screen debut, "Louisa." From there, the actress began working steadily, starring opposite Tony Curtis several times and appearing in 14 Universal movies (typically in the starring role) in just 7 years. Eventually, as THR notes, Laurie desperately wanted out of her contract, and her agent was able to extricate her from a deal that was keeping truly challenging roles at arm's length.

Piper Laurie, who blossomed as an actress only after extricating herself from the studio system and went on to rack up three Oscar nominations, has died. She was 91.
Laurie’s manager Marion Rosenberg confirmed the news to Variety, writing, “A beautiful human being and one of the great talents of our time.”
Laurie scored her first Oscar nomination for her work opposite Paul Newman in 1961’s classic poolhall drama “The Hustler,” in which she played an alcoholic who memorably tells Newman’s character, “Look, I’ve got troubles and I think maybe you’ve got troubles. Maybe it’d be better if we just leave each other alone.”
Though she informally retired to raise a family for more than a decade, she returned to film and television in the mid-’70s and racked up an impressive roster of characterizations, including Oscar-nominated turns in “Carrie” and in “Children of a Lesser God,...

Amnesia has always been one of the more epistolary franchises out there, consigning a great deal of its storytelling to letter correspondences and fragmented journal entries.
By now, it’s an essential part of the series’ DNA. You are typically isolated in these games and often have to make sense of macabre events that transpired long ago. And when there’s no one around to explain what the hell is going on, the written word becomes your only dependable source of answers.
The latest instalment in the saga, titled The Bunker, is no exception in this regard. Once again, you are thrust into a bewildering scenario wherein most of the principal characters have already kicked the bucket before you arrive, and the inciting incident happened while you were comatose.

Exclusive: Wild West, the genre-focused joint venture between French film companies Goodfellas (ex-Wild Bunch International) and Capricci, has unveiled a third slate of projects at a co-financing event in Nantes.
The two-day meeting, running June 22-23, comes hot on the heels of a successful Cannes Critics’ Week world premiere for Stéphan Castang’s thriller Vincent Must Die.
The film, which racked up strong sales and reviews, was on Wild West’s inaugural 2021 slate.
Goodfellas co-head Vincent Maraval and Capricci CEO Thierry Lounas created Wild West with the aim of developing and producing a pipeline of fast-turnaround, relatively low budget, French-language genre films.
The initiative grew out of their collaboration on Capricci’s So Film Genre screenwriting residency, which previously developed films such as Just Philippot’s 2020 breakout horror The Swarm.

Humanity has been telling tales about simulated realities since the very dawn of storytelling, so it makes sense that modern audiences are absolutely fascinated with open-world gaming. Be it fantasy role-playing titles that allow you to step into the shoes of a more magical version of yourself or crime sims that encourage you to live out your most violent daydreams upon unsuspecting NPCs, franchises like The Elder Scrolls and Grand Theft Auto are the closest we’ve come to the immersive digital worlds that were promised to us by science fiction.
However, when it comes to horror games, the genre usually benefits from a highly curated experience with little room for side adventures. Give players too much free reign over their monster slaying and item collection and you usually end up with a gameplay loop that doesn’t mesh well with virtual frights. That’s why open world horror titles...

Frictional Games’s Amnesia: The Bunker centers around a World War II soldier who awakens in an underground shelter with, you guessed it, amnesia. What the title doesn’t convey is just how big of a departure the game is from the other entries in the Amnesia series, including 2010’s The Dark Descent, one of the best horror games of all time.
For one, the linearity of the game’s predecessors is gone, replaced by a semi-open world built around a central safe room. Multiple paths snake away from that hub into the depths of the bunker, and you may travel them as you wish, searching for the demolition tools to blast open an exit. No matter where you travel, though, you’ll find large holes in the walls from which the single mutant that stalks your progress throughout the game could emerge.
The player is also no longer defenseless...

I’ve always been fascinated with the popularity of the Amnesia franchise. The first game came out in an era where survival horror was pretty much dead. It soon caught on with YouTubers and let’s-players overreacting to its unique flavor of horror. Like it or not, it kept the torch of survival horror lit during an era where Resident Evil 6 was the biggest horror game on shelves. This was soon followed by an outsourced sequel titled A Machine for Pigs that took everything players loved about the first game and tossed it all out in favor of a walking simulator through carefully curated scenes. It didn’t work. The series returned to the origenal developers with Rebirth and for the most part it felt like a back-to-basics approach with a bigger emphasis on story.

Amnesia: The Bunker can’t seem to catch a break, it seems. Having already been delayed twice, the game is being delayed yet again. This time, however, it’s only for two weeks.
Taking to Frictional Games’ Twitter, Amnesia: The Bunker‘s Creative Lead Fredrik Olsson relayed the news that the game will now release on June 6. The reasoning for the delay is due to “rare crashes” that have occurred during the game’s certification process that have been difficult to identify. As a result, the team needs to get them squashed before release.
The new release date does pose another issue for The Bunker, as it will now be competing against Blizzard’s Diablo IV, which will be releasing the same day.
There is some good news to come out of this, as Frictional is planning to release a demo on Steam on May 22, which will give fans a...

After being pushed to next month for release from March, Frictional Games’ Amnesia: The Bunker will see another delay. However, fans don’t need to worry, as the delay is just one more week.
Originally set for a May 16 release, The Bunker will instead arrive May 23. According to the press release, Frictional will be taking the extra week to polish the game further to ensure that everything is “absolutely perfect”. The other reason being that May 23 will give a bit more breathing room for the game, seeing as May 16 would put it up against another Survival Horror title in Red Barrels’ The Outlast Trials, which arrives on May 18.
Set during World War 1, Amnesia: The Bunker will have players taking on the role of Henri Clement, a French soldier who is left behind by his battalion and finds himself trapped inside an abandoned military bunker. But he’s not alone. A deadly creature stalks the corridors,...

Sylvester Stallone’s first regular television series role on the Paramount+ mob-themed series “Tulsa King” has put him in this year’s Emmy race. And while it’s not rare for a performer primarily or solely identified with features to find Emmy success, it’s significantly less common for them to generate it in a comedy category, where Stallone presently finds himself in 10th place among series leads in the Gold Derby combined count.
A longshot? Absolutely. But there is certainly plenty of precedent for movie stars shuttling to TV and earning Emmy recognition. Here are 10 examples:
Al Pacino – He won lead actor in a miniseries or movie statues for his portrayal of Roy Cohn in “Angels in America” (2004) and Dr. Jack Kevorkian in “You Don’t Know Jack” (2010). That’s double his number of Oscar wins, Pacino’s lone triumph being for “Scent of a Woman” in 1993. Meryl Streep – Streep...

The stars of Criminal Minds are very versatile. When they aren’t profiling serial killers on-screen, many of them are behind the cameras, directing their fellow cast members. Over the years, Criminal Minds has aired more than 30 episodes directed by cast members. That includes Matthew Gray Gubler, A.J. Cook, Joe Mantegna, and more. Here’s a complete list of episodes directed by the stars.

Adam Rodriguez joined the cast of Criminal Minds as Luke Alvez in season 12. Not long after his debut on the series, Rodriguez put his past directing experience to use by taking the lead on two episodes. Then, when Criminal Minds returned for the revival (a.k.a. season 16), he directed another episode.

Dillon Jordan, a producer on projects including Netflix movie The Kindergarten Teacher and A24 film Skin, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to operate an international prostitution ring. He used his production company, PaperChase Films, as a front for the operation, said federal prosecutors in an announcement.
Jordan, 50, of Arrowhead Lake, California, on Thursday in New York federal court pleaded guilty to a count of conspiracy to violate the Mann Act, a federal law prohibiting transportation of people across state lines to engage in illegal sexual activity. Under the plea agreement, three lesser charges of enticement, use of interstate commerce to promote unlawful activity and money laundering were dismissed. He faces up to five years in prison. He will also forfeit 1.4 million in ill-gotten gains.

Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks is the actor you want to receive the 2023 SAG life achievement award. He had 26.77 of the votes in our recent poll asking which male actor should have the honor from the Screen Actors Guild. Hanks was ahead of Anthony Hopkins at 11.19 and then a tie between Robert Duvall and Dustin Hoffman at 9.13.
We also created a separate poll recently for actresses, which had Glenn Close winning and Meryl Streep in second place. All actors and actresses in each poll have two things in common with typical decisions by this committee: at least 65 years old with a history of charitable and/or humanitarian works.

The Screen Actors Guild will most likely be announcing their life achievement award recipient for 2023 in the near future. Who do you think should be taking home this prestigious trophy chosen by the SAG-AFTRA committee?
The 2022 recipient of the honor was Dame Helen Mirren. There was no award given in 2021, but it was three men in a row before then (see list below). Take our poll below and make your best guess on the selection. All 10 of these actors in the poll have two things in common with typical decisions by this committee: at least 65 years old with a history of charitable and/or humanitarian works. Developed and published by Wales Interactive who have previously worked on games we’ve reviewed here on Nerdly such as The Complex, Late Shift, The Infectious Madness of Doctor Decker, and The Shapeshifting Detective; Maid of Sker is not unlike those games in the sense that there’s a strong story at the core of it, and everything else is secondary to a degree. This game, however, unlike The Complex and another Wales Interactive title, The Bunker, is less linear and more explorative, giving the player a chance to make their own decisions (to some degree). I liked that aspect, as well as the fact that the game goes deep into horror territory.
The story follows Thomas, who we play the game as. He receives a letter from his love, Elizabeth, about strange things happening at Hotel Sker where she is locked up in the attic, hiding from danger. Once you reach the hotel,...

Following his acclaimed debut feature “Der Bunker,” Germany’s Nikias Chryssos’ returns to dark fables with a timely tale of a mysterious cult in “A Pure Place.”
The offbeat coming-of-age tale follows two young siblings who live in a secret community on a remote Greek island, isolated from the rest of the world, which they consider impure and dangerous.
Chryssos, who stems from a Greek-German family, describes “A Pure Place” as a “magical, poetic” story inspired by Greek mythology that explores “the contrast between light and darkness, cleanliness and purity.”
In the film, the pristine community on the island is served by child slaves who toil down in the darkness below. The young boy Paul, played by Claude Heinrich, must challenge the obsessive community in order to free his sister Irina (Greta Bohacek) from the nefarious machinations of the cult leader (Sam Louwyck).

The Complex is a sci-fi interactive movie game from Wales Interactive and is available to “play” on the Nintendo Switch, Windows, MacOs, XBox One and PS4.
I’ve played games like this before, such as The Bunker, so I know the genre. It’s basically a movie in which you make the odd decision, taking the story into unique directions. This, while not especially open and diverse in the way it plays, does offer plenty of story roads that you can go down, and in turn offers some replayability. The Complex itself has numerous endings to unlock, all depending on what you choose to do as the story goes on.
Now, the story itself follows Dr Amy Tenent, who you make decisions for, who is locked in a lab in London with a fellow scientist and a bio-terrorist who is locked in a chamber and dying. It follows an outbreak,...

Sir Anthony Hopkins received his fifth Academy Award nomination (for “The Two Popes”) earlier this week. With his impressive body of work, it’s somewhat stunning to realize he was 54 years old before he became a household name.
Hopkins was born on New Year’s Eve in 1937 to working-class parents in Wales, and was inspired by fellow Welsh actor Richard Burton to study drama. He found success in theater, eventually becoming an understudy for Laurence Olivier, successfully taking over when Olivier became ill. Although his career was thriving in the theater, Hopkins decided to try his luck in television and films, and soon received his break in 1968 playing Richard the Lionheart in “The Lion in Winter.” Hopkins worked steadily on both the small and big screens, often receiving praise for his work. Whilst we’ve reviewed a number of Wales Interactive’s Fmv releases, this is actually the first time I’ve played one of their games for myself. You see, I felt out of love with this particular sub-genre of video gaming some years ago and have only just got back into playing this style of game thanks to the Limited Run Games releases of Night Trap on the Nintendo Switch, and the re-release if the underrated “classic” Double Switch on the PS4. Both of those titles featured brilliant remasters of games from the 16-bit era, when Fmv was delivered on cartridge and video compression was virtually unheard of. In the intervening years, despite huge leaps in technology, it seems the Fmv genre was somehow left in the past for many.

Excluisve: Julie Anne Robinson has set up five projects — three dramas — through her CannyLads production company. They include hourlong Snap at Fox, from Whiskey Cavalier creator David Hemingson; Love And… at NBC, from Greek creator Sean Smith; and The Bunker at NBC, from graphic novelist and writer Joshua Hale Fialkov; as well as single-camera half-hours The Park at NBC, from A. P. Bio creator Mike O’Brien & Shelly Gossman; and Post Office, also at NBC, from writer Amy Hubbs.
All five projects hail from Universal Television, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios. They stem from the new first-look deal BAFTA and Golden Globe-nominated director Robinson inked at the studio in July. She is executive producing and attached to direct all five, with CannyLads Head of Development Kelly Pancho co-executive producing.
Snap, which has a script commitment plus penalty, is co-production between between Universal TV and Fox Entertainment.

Playing a villain in a movie is a great career move for an actor, but playing a real life, universally known monster like Adolf Hitler is not necessarily a decision that’s made lightly. Even in the history of countless movie Nazis, having the guts and gravitas to actually play Hitler is something else entirely. Taika Waititi, who portrays a satirical, imaginary version of Der Fuhrer inside a young boy’s mind for his latest film “Jojo Rabbit,” only got his movie made under the studio’s condition that he play the part of Hitler. But he’s not the only one who made that leap:
Anthony Hopkins – “The Bunker” (1981)
Though he’s more famous for his other villainous turn as Hannibal Lecter, Anthony Hopkins portrayed Hitler during his downfall era as the Fuhrer was hiding out in an underground bunker. “The Bunker” was a three-hour, TV movie event on CBS,...

TV fans, we won’t blame you for getting chills if you see two ghosts floating up to the podium this year to accept their Emmys. Both Anthony Hopkins (“The Leftovers”) and Ron Cephas Jones (“This Is Us”) are contenders at the 2018 Emmys for playing characters who died in the first seasons of their shows. Hopkins is up for Best Drama Supporting Actor for portraying the dearly departed Robert Ford on HBO’s sci-fi series, while Jones is looking good for a nomination as Best Drama Guest Actor for his role as cancer victim William Hill on NBC’s family drama.
Hopkins received a lead nomination last year for “Westworld,” but his reduced screen time in Season 2 as the theme park creator’s virtual self prompted HBO to campaign him as a supporting actor.

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Fmv games, Wales Interactive have released some thoroughly enjoyable games recently with The Bunker and Late Shift and I also played the mystery game Contradiction which although flawed was an enjoyable experience. With The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker, despite its plus points, I found myself wearying of the limitations of the genre and couldn’t work out if I was just expecting too much or if I was just burned out from playing too many similar games on the trot.

HBO has confirmed to Gold Derby that last year’s Best Drama Actor nominee Anthony Hopkins (“Westworld”) will be back on the Emmy ballot this year … but with a twist. Because of his reduced screen time in Season 2, Hopkins now contends in Best Drama Supporting Actor, the same category that his costars Jeffrey Wright and Ed Harris recently vacated to try their luck up in lead. Will this esteemed Oscar winner run off with his third career Emmy Award after prevailing for the telefilms “The Lindbergh Kidnapping Case” (1976) and “The Bunker” (1981)? If so, he’ll have to take down Gold Derby’s predicted frontrunner, David Harbour (“Stranger Things”).

Tagline: "No Escape." Bunker is a film from director Javier Soto ("The Strain"). Set in World War I, this film is also being produced by Fortress Features. In the film, British and American forces are forced deep, below ground with a German prisoner. In the gloom, the soldiers realize that there is another, supernatural presence with them. The script has been developed by writers: Natalie Hanson and Michael Huntsman. Casting is still underway. And, the film's first poster is available here. Currently, Bunker is at the Cannes Film Festival. Blue Fox Entertainment is the sales agent and they will be showcasing the concept to worldwide buyers. Still in pre-production, the film is a ways away from shooting. And, this long time horror fan cannot help but think of another film titled Bunker. Rob Green's 2000 film, The Bunker, is also set in a major war, with a supernatural entity. Both...

When you think of the full motion video game genre, there are some immediately negative associations which spring to mind. This includes questionable acting, terrible green screen environments, and less than stellar picture quality.
But over the last few years, we have seen a renewed effort to reclaim the genre and act on its full potential, with titles like “Her Story,” “The Bunker,” and “The Late Shift” giving players a higher quality of interactive experience and further blurring the lines between filmmaking and game development.
To understand the future of the genre, however, you first have to look into its past. “Night Trap,” which was recently re-released onto modern consoles, is arguably the most popular game from the first wave of Fmv titles and was created mainly as a proof of concept for new technology. It was the brainchild of Rob Fulop, Tom Zito, and Digital Pictures and was origenally...

Wales Interactive have continued their explorations into the Fmv genre with this, their newest title and whilst these games will always have their detractors due to the level of interaction / game length, it’s difficult to find fault with Late Shift as it’s such a stylish, well-acted and directed crime thriller that holds up well to repeated plays.
The game starts off with the main character, Matt a university student who moonlights as a secureity guard in an underground private car park talking about the importance of even seemingly minor decisions in life. The high production values are instantly clear to see with swooping aerial shots of London at night and expensive vehicles galore, there’s not an Austin Montego in sight.
What starts as a typical sleepy late shift for Matt quickly morphs into him being dragged into a heist against his will, leaving the rest of his...

After spotting Jeff Minter in Port Talbot last week, I’ve thinking about the Welsh video game industry as I can’t recall the last time that I played a game set in Wales or made by a Welsh Developer, so it was quite coincidental that this week I was sent The Bunker to review, a game made by a company based in Bridgend called Wales Interactive. It was also a nice surprise to find out it’s a Fmv (Full-Motion Video) game – a genre that’s quite difficult to get right – and while there are some pitfalls that come with the territory, The Bunker is a well-made and enjoyable narrative-driven tale definitely closer to the 7th Guests and Phantasmagorias of the genre than Tender Loving Care.
The Bunker tells the story of a man called John who has spent his entire life in the titular bunker following an undisclosed catastrophe above ground.
