At the time the story takes place, a common practice among middle and high school students was something called "passing notes". Students would pass each other messages written on slips or sheets of folded paper during class in the hopes that they wouldn't been seen doing so by their teachers. Since 1984 was a year long before everyone could send text messages with cell and smart phones, Sam was trying to communicate silently with her friend sitting behind her instead of talking and drawing attention from their teacher.
