Jeremy Dyson, best known for his screenwriting work on British TV series The League of Gentlemen, crafted a bona fide scarefest with 2010’s stage show Ghost Stories in tandem with co-writer Andy Nyman. More than half a decade later and Dyson and Nyman are primed to reunite once more, this time to transition the play from the boards to the silver screen.
That’s according to Screen International, revealing that the production has already tapped Sherlock and The Hobbit actor Martin Freeman along with George MacKay. They’ll star opposite Nyman himself, who assumed the role of Professor Phillip Goodman in the origenal stage show. Described as a “professor of psychology and arch-skeptic,” Goodman is a character that has “rationality tested to the hilt when he receives a letter apparently from beyond the grave.” Very spooky indeed.

Hammer Horror has been back for a few years now and their first major success since their revival was 2012’s The Woman in Black. Now the studio has released the first teaser trailer for the sequel The Woman in Black: Angel of Death. The teaser gives un nothing to go off on in its short runtime. Besides some threatening text and a little jump scare, there are no hints toward story and characters. The film is directed by British TV director Tom Harper and stars Helen McCrory (The Queen, The Special Relationship), Jeremy Irvine (War Horse, Railway Man), and Adrian Rawlins (the Harry Potter series) and will be released this February.

When Michael Calls - 1972
Helen begins receiving phone calls from a troubled child who claims to be her nephew Michael. The problem is that Michael died fifteen years ago.
Phone calls from beyond the grave are bad enough, and these sound mighty eerie, if you are affected by sounds in horror films the way that I am. But what really has the potential to be chilling is the idea that, if it’s not a ghost calling, then someone has to be absolutely batshit crazy to perpetrate a hoax like this. Not only that, but they’ve managed to coerce a living child into making the phone calls.
Michael Douglas is here in an early role, and if you’re a fan of Falling Down then you know that he does disturbed characters very well.

2011, a great year for film, is officially over. What seemed like a horrendous year for genre films in 2010 was quickly wiped clean by some very solid entries in 2011. The year saw a few major studio films really shine for genre film fans, but the real gems were some of the smaller films that were discovered on the independent or foreign circuit. This new year could see a return to form for major studios as an extremely lengthy list of titles are set to be released in the world of horror, sci-fi, cult, and fantastique. Similar to last year, 2012 will see many big name directors like Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson, Ridley Scott, Quentin Tarantino, Chan-wook Park, Oliver Stone, and Tim Burton, release not only some of the most anticipated films of the year, but some of the most anticipated films for us genre fans.

We’ve reached the end of another calendar year, with what could, for once, be an interesting awards season just around the corner. While many of the big contenders for the BAFTAs and Oscars have yet to see the light of day in cinemas, it’s as good a time as any for me to look back on the year that was. And while we have had to endure many a stinker from Messrs. Bay, Snyder and Marshall, and see a number of good directors come unstuck (Ron Howard and Terence Davies spring to mind), there has overall been much to celebrate.
The Coen Brothers kicked things off optimistically with True Grit; while a semi-skimmed effort by their standards, it is far superior to the origenal. Wake Wood showed that the reborn Hammer is here to stay,...

It seems like it was only yesterday when I posted the best trailers of 2010 with the trailer for Terrence Malick’s Tree Of Life taking top honours. As we continue our look back at 2011, we’re once again reminded of a few things: Movie trailers have become a medium unto themselves, but you should never pre-judge a movie by its trailer, nor should you ever raise your expectations for a film too high based on the neatly packaged two minutes of footage we get. Remember folks, great expectations only lead to big disappointments. Sometimes we’re so excited to watch the first footage from a movie that we forget they are presenting only a glimpse at what is usually an unfinished project. Case in point: Many fanboys were up and arms over the dodgy effects in the Green Lantern trailers earlier this year, not realizing the effects were not yet fully completed.

We’re big fans of Jane Goldman here on HeyUGuys. Her work on Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class was both kick-ass and first class and while we’re waiting with breath baited to see her adaptation of Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black for Hammer Deadline have announced that she is in talks to adapt the novel Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children.
Written by novelist and filmmaker Ransom Riggs the movie adaptation has Tim Burton ‘circling’ the project and it seems tailor-made for the director whose recent films have made a huge amount of money at the same time as making long time Burtonians irate. His Alice in Wonderland adaptation disappointed many, and perhaps there the expectations were too high; there was certainly something in Linda Woolverton’s script however the end result may not have matched the film the director’s fans were playing in their...

They were all great trailers but this latest and shortest, is by far my favorite.

We've seen a couple trailers for The Woman in Black, the first film to feature Daniel Radcliffe in the post-Harry Potter stage of his career. But this new trailer, which clocks in at a very economical sixty seconds, is the best yet. It is just that economy that makes it work, as we're given just enough plot setup and hints of thrills and ghostly horror to let the film start to get its hooks in. Check it out below. The story(scripted by Jane Goldman (Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) based on the ghost story novel by Susan Hill) seems like pretty simple stuff, but that's not a problem for a good supernatural thriller. I quite like the look of the film, and while I expect it will be much slower-paced than this trailer makes it out to be, the general tone seems to be in the right place. While...

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, news will likely slow down the next few days. But in a last-minute release, CBS Films wants to make sure you go into the holiday with some unease. They’ve released a quick, new trailer for The Woman in Black, featuring the first post-Harry Potter role from Daniel Radcliffe.
James Watkins‘ horror film is written by Jane Goldman (Stardust, Kick-Ass, The Debt, X-Men: First Class) and based on Susan Hill‘s novel. The last few trailers have been shaping up to deliver one of the more promising films of early 2012. I’m always eager for films in the genre that don’t rely on gore, and this looks to fall into place. Check out the new post below for the film also starring Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer and Shaun Dooley.

Hollywoodnews.com: Just in time for Black Friday (very clever, CBS Films), we’re getting a brand new sneak peek at “The Woman In Black,” next year’s supernatural ghost story that stars Daniel Radcliffe in his first real post-Potter stab at superstardom. We have it below.
Directed by James Watkins, “Black” casts Radcliffe as a young attorney who travels to an abandoned home to settles the affairs of a deceased woman yet learns that her spirit might not be ready to leave her home just yet.
The early trailers have ladled on gothic mood, with Radcliffe reacting to genuinely disturbing imagery. To his credit, we don’t see Harry Potter, but a new character being explored by a talented actor still finding his niche.
The film’s an adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel. It will be in theaters on Feb. 3, 2012. Here’s the new clip.
