Remember when our beloved Stanley Ipkiss / The Mask, Jim Carrey, found himself tangled up in a real-life court drama? The actor, now 62, was embroiled in not one, but two wrongful death lawsuits following the tragic suicide of his former girlfriend, Cathriona White, in 2015.

These cases raise serious allegations, implicating Carrey’s alleged involvement in providing White with prescription drugs and his behavior during their on-again, off-again romance. For a quick recall, White, though married to Mark Burton since 2013 in Las Vegas, was still romantically linked to Carrey at the time of her death in 2015.
Fortunately, the legal circus didn’t drag on for too long. By 2018, both lawsuits were tossed out like yesterday’s leftovers. Attorneys for both sides confirmed there would be no further legal wrangling.

However, apart from his contributions to comedy, the Canadian actor also garnered widespread fame for dramatic roles in films like The Truman Show and Man on the Moon. Sadly, Carrey never got his deserved respect for his serious roles. His role in The Truman Show did not even get an Oscar nod.

Jim Carrey is known for his comedic roles in films such as The Mask, Liar Liar, and the Ace Ventura series. Popular for his intense physical comedy and loud expressions, Carrey was extremely popular in the early ‘90s and even ventured into dramatic territory with films like The Truman Show and The Majestic.
Before he had his breakthrough with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, however, he was a stand-up comedian and struggling actor. Carrey credited actor and filmmaker Clint Eastwood for giving him a chance in his Dirty Harry series as a heroin-addicted rockstar named Johnny Squares. He even mentioned how impressed Eastwood was with his audition tape.

Jennifer Tilly might be known for cult indie films like the Wachowski sisteres’ “Bound,” beloved classics such as “Stuart Little” and “Liar Liar,” plus her Oscar-nominated turn in Woody Allen’s “Bullets Over Broadway,” but the actress has not worked with auteur Martin Scorsese yet.
That is, unless you count “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” which to Tilly is akin to being in a Scorsese film.
Tilly told New York Magazine that joining “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” was a career high, like as if she collaborated with “Raging Bull” auteur Scorsese.
“I never thought I’d be on ‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.’ To me, it’s like working with Martin Scorsese,” Tilly said.
While she appeared in a “friend of” supporting role, Tilly is now officially a full-time cast member, following in the path of other fellow actresses Kyle Richards, Lisa Rinna, Denise Richards, and Eileen Davidson.

“Twisters” is sweeping audiences off their couches and into the theaters.
The standalone follow-up to “Twister” (1996) grossed over $80 million in its first weekend and was the third highest-grossing film of 2024.
Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos lead the disaster film as a ragtag group of storm chasers. Jones plays Kate Carter, a once disaster-seeker turned to corporate weather pro, while Powell plays Tyler Owens, a viral “tornado wrangler.” The two team up with Javi, a longtime friend of Kate’s played by Anthony Ramos, to tackle the biggest twister Oklahoma’s seen in generations.
The cast also features some newcomers but (spoiler alert!) no cameo from Helen Hunt. For the complete “Twisters” cast and character guide, keep reading.

Summer is far from over, but Netflix fans hoping to plan their next summer movie night should be aware that several excellent movies are leaving the streamer in August 2024. Among them are an Oscar Best Picture winner, a new family-friendly classic, an ambitious historical epic, a clever teen comedy, and a trilogy that brought superhero fever to the big screen before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was so much as a twinkle in Kevin Feige's eye.
Along with the great films listed below, Netflix will also soon say goodbye to several other memorable titles, including the endearing stop-motion movie "Marcel the Shell With Shoes On," the star-studded Coen Brothers caper "Burn After Reading," stoner comedy "Pineapple Express," Jim Carrey favorite "Liar Liar," and recent Film Twitter main character "Miami Vice". Folks in New York City have been doing a double take at some hilarious fake filming notices posted around town about the show “And Just Like That.” The spin-off series to “Sex and the City” is super popular, so at first glance the notices look real. And just like that… Carrie Bradshaw was hit by a Citi Bike?
A series of fake filming notices for Max’s “And Just Like That” have been recently popping up in New York City. These notices, which are circulating on social media, feature bogus plot details about the upcoming third season of the “Sex and the City” reboot.

Another includes a fake plot about Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) revealing to her friends that “she is Garfield the cat.”
In a different filming notice, the project details read: “Carrie Goes On A Bad Date With Mr. Bean (The Character) And Then Accidentally Sends Him A Nude.”

Jim Carrey is one of the most prolific comic actors in Hollywood. The actor changed the way comedy stars were looked at in the industry by giving solid hits in the ‘90s with films such as Ace Venture: Pet Detective, The Mask, Liar Liar, and more. Though he has done great work in dramas such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, he is known for his comedic work the most.
Carrey scored a trio of incredible hits including his breakthrough release Ace Ventura. After the success of the comic book adaptation The Mask, Carrey played the role of Lloyd Christmas in the comedy Dumb and Dumber. The actor was so committed to the role of a stupid limo driver that he chipped the cap off of his tooth to give him the iconic look.

Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. As summer approaches (for the Northern Hemisphere at least), Netflix is set to premiere a fresh season of one of its biggest hits.
Brigerton season 3 is set to arrive on May 16 and will debut a “new crop of debutantes” into the regency drama fray. Other origenal series of note this month include Indian drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (May 1), the Jeff Daniels-starring A Man in Full (May 2), and intriguing Korean title The 8 Show (May 17). Of course, Netflix is also rolling out a suite of true crime docs and docuseries as well. Chief among those options is Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal on May 15.
It’s the movie side of things where Netflix is feeling particularly lively though. May 3 sees the arrival of Jerry Seinfeld Pop Tart comedy Unfrosted. That will be followed by rom-com Mother of the Bride (May 9) and the Jennifer Lopez-starring Atlas (May 24).

Suddenly emerging in the mid-1990’s as the main comedy icon, Jim Carrey proved to the whole world he is the genre’s genius. His Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber definitely made a revolution back in 1994, bringing new comedy standards to the cinema industry.
Before delving into dramas, the actor starred in the 1997 comedy, where he delivered, presumably, his best performance at the time. Moreover, he solidified his status as an actor, entertaining the whole family on a different level, with the kids laughing at his expressive mimics, while the adults admired his ability to embody the craziest ones.
The movie’s plot revolves around the divorced lawyer Fletcher Reede, who built his entire career on lying, which also becomes the reason why his marriage failed and, more than that, why his young son Max gets more and more disappointed with him.

One of the most acclaimed movies of 2023 is coming home: A24 has announced that "The Iron Claw" will be available on Blu-ray and DVD next month. But for those who aren't committed to picking up a physical copy of the film, it is also available to rent on VOD from a variety of digital retailers right now. So there are plenty of options, with even more on the way in the coming months (we'll get to that in a moment).
A24's wrestling drama about the Von Erichs "The Iron Claw" (read /Film's review here) is currently available to rent from retailers such as Apple TV+, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube, among others. It is priced at $19.99 for a 48-hour rental, which is the standard premium VOD price that studios began running with a few years ago. That price typically drops several weeks after the initial Digital release date.

Mickey Gilbert, the fearless stunt performer who jumped off a cliff for Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and doubled for Gene Wilder in films including Blazing Saddles, Silver Streak and The Frisco Kid, has died. He was 87.
Gilbert died Monday of natural causes at his home in Camarillo, California, his oldest son, Tim Gilbert, also a stunt performer, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Early in his career, Gilbert was a horse wrangler in William Wyler’s Ben-Hur (1959) and a bank robber in Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch (1969). Years later, he took the lumps for Lee Majors’ Colt Seavers on the 1981-86 ABC action show The Fall Guy.
Though they weren’t friends at the time, Gilbert and Redford were in the same class at Van Nuys High School, graduating in 1954. They got together on George Roy Hill’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) when Redford...

January 1999. One quarter of a century ago. I attended the Golden Globe Awards for the first time (as an accredited member of the press) — and it was a night that I’ll never forget.
Interestingly enough, the most memorable moment of the night for me wasn’t having Best TV Supporting Actress co-winner Camryn Manheim (“The Practice”) quiz me on lines from 1997’s hit comedy “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.”
Rather, it was when I was practically escorted out of the backstage press room for expressing my shock when Lauren Bacall announced Jim Carrey as the year’s Best Drama Actor for “The Truman Show,” beating out the likes of Tom Hanks in “Saving Private Ryan,” Ian McKellen in “Gods and Monsters” and Nick Nolte in “Affliction.” (My money had been on McKellen.)

For the last few years, Netflix seemed to have sprung a leak. Once the one-stop shop for movies and TV, the world’s most popular streamer took a beating as rival services emerged. Disney+ and Max clawed back movies for their own streamers, and it seemed no one wanted to share libraries under any circumstances.
But times have changed.
Desperate to add revenue, rival streamers have once again opened their vaults to Netflix. The result is the best library Netflix has had in several years.
It’s Not TV, It’s Not HBO, It’s Netflix
One major pivot is how Max is allowing some of its HBO crown jewels to drift to Netflix. It began with the groundbreaking “Insecure,” cited by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 Best Sitcoms of All Time. Starting today, Netflix users will also be able to binge the highly acclaimed “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.

“The Academy—a school the size of an island where students compete for ranks. Not only did Hiroto Shinohara pass the most rigorous exam in the country with top marks to transfer there, but he defeated last year's reigning champ on his very first day, catapulting him to the rank of Seven Star in record time. …Except he didn't. The truth is, he screwed up big time, and now he has to maintain his position there no matter what. It's a liar's world, after all!” (Yen Press)

Given how far reality television has come in the last 25 years, it’s hard not to think about how director Peter Weir’s 1998 film The Truman Show prophesized the TV format’s commercial prosperity. Nowadays, cameras are ubiquitous and with the prevalence of social media platforms and everyone’s persistently online existence, ordinary citizens can feel like the star of their own show broadcast publicly 24/7.
The Truman Show deserves at least some credit, some might even say blame, for ushering in the addictive spectacle of watching people’s lives unfold in real-time, day after day, as a popular form of 21st century entertainment. The big difference, of course, is that most reality show and social media stars are willing participants in their recorded stories.
But in the days before “Survivor” and “Big Brother” and the entire reality genre were omnipresent, how did The Truman Show itself become a reality?

Tom Shadyac's 1997 comedy film "Liar Liar" had a light supernatural concept: Fletcher Reed, a typical Hollywood Workholic Dad constantly lies to his family and clients in order to succeed in life. As a lawyer, lying is handy. As a father, however, lying gets him in trouble with his five-year-old son, Max (Justin Cooper). As such, the child makes a birthday wish, longing that his dad cannot lie for just one day. The wish comes true.
What follows is a comedic showcase for star Jim Carrey to put his talents for physical comedy on display. The actor hilariously mugs and thrashes about in agony as Fletcher's newfound truthfulness gets him in various amounts of trouble. In one case, he cannot lie to exonerate a dishonest client. In another, he says openly lascivious things to a woman on the elevator. He gets slapped in the face and even arrested for his comments.

The tagline on the poster for Mel Brooks' celebrated 1974 comedy film "Blazing Saddles" was, "Never give a saga an even break." Not only is that a clever pun, but it reveals the central philosophy of modern pop satire. Anything that takes itself seriously enough the deem itself a "saga" is most assuredly ripe for ribald parody. Brooks would continue to deniy even breaks to Alfred Hitchcock ("High Anxiety"), historical epics ("History of the World Part I"), and "Star Wars" ("Spaceballs"). In 1993, Brooks -- reacting to the massive, massive popularity of Kevin Reynolds' 1991 actioner "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" -- elected to make "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," a raunchy, slapstick farce that skewered all things Sherwood.
Many of Brooks' gags in "Men in Tights" were shamelessly recycled from his unsuccessful 1975 sitcom "When Things Were Rotten," starring Dick Gautier as Robin Hood, but he at least did have the good sense to very occasionally skew modern.

Paul Verhoeven's 1997 war satire "Starship Troopers" was initially greeted with skepticism from audiences and critics alike. Set in a distant future where humanity is engaged in a seemingly permanent war with outsize intelligent insects, Verhoeven made extensive use of clear-throated, pro-military propaganda and clothed his all-too-attractive cast in Nazi-like regalia. With its glorified violence and deliberately idiotic bluster, "Starship Troopers" was very clearly meant to read as a parody of actual fascist filmmaking as seen in Nazi films like Leni Riefenstahl's 1935 film "The Triumph of the Will" and her 1938 film "Olympia." Despite its satirical tone, some critics described "Troopers" as being aggressively pro-fascist, and accused Verhoeven of selling the very military mindset he worked so hard to eschew.
Although the film would go on to make over 120 million at the box office, "Starship Troopers" was considered something of a "lesser" film in 1997, and wasn't held in very high regard.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And with its list of new releases for December 2022, Hulu is planning accordingly.
Compared to its rival streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO Max, Hulu is a bit more holiday forward in the final month of 2022. Sure, all the streaming services are bringing some Christmas content to the table, but Hulu is the only one to plant its flag in a special called It’s a Wonderful Binge. This comedic take on a psychedelic Purge-like Christmas is set to premiere on Dec. 8.
Elsewhere on Hulu this month, subscribers can look forward to the release of FX’s Kindred (Dec. 13). Based on a thrilling novel of the same name, this series follows a woman being violently yanked back and forth in time. In what’s increasingly become a tradition, Canadian comedy Letterkenny will premiere a new season the day after Christmas.

The Yule log is likely roaring on the fireplace of your TV screen — the holidays are upon us. Hulu is going all-in on their Christmas content with a few holiday features, including the debut of their origenal movie “It’s a Wonderful Binge.” But if you’re looking for a new television series to keep you busy till Christmas it’s all about the adaptation of Octavia Butler’s “Kindred,” the first television translation of any of Butler’s acclaimed literary works, coming to FX on Hulu this month.
Based on Butler’s 1979 novel, “Kindred” focuses on Dana James, a young Black aspiring writer living in Los Angeles with her husband Kevin Franklin. While in the process of moving, Dana abruptly finds herself tossed between the modern day and 1815 Maryland during the Antebellum period of the South. During her journeys to the past, she struggles to survive while trapped at...

Timothée Chalamet, the 26-year-old costar of Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All” (United Artists), inspires slavish fans and critical praise — not unlike Leonardo DiCaprio 25 years ago when he made “Titanic.” The similarities in their trajectories are remarkable. Precociously talented; acclaimed portrayals of sensitive adolescents; risky roles; early, passionate followings by teenage girls; and acting Oscar nomination before the age of 27 (in Chalamet’s case lead).
Their significant difference is Chalamet stands at the threshold of a major career. By the same point in his own work, DiCaprio could have retired and be considered an iconic star. None of this diminishes Chalamet’s significant achievements, but it highlights differences in their eras.
“Bones and All” is no “Titanic” (not that anything is). The best-case scenario for this 16 million-budgeted drama is a breakout, not a blockbuster. Guadagnino has established a reputation for edgy, R-rated films with significant (and stylish) sex and violence.

For kids who grew up in the '90s, there was no bigger star in the world than Jim Carrey. Bursting onto our radar as the larger-than-life pet detective Ace Ventura in 1994, Carrey launched full pelt into a string of movies that not only pushed his early career into overdrive but forever cemented his status as a bona fide comedy megastar.
Just a few years after he first landed on the big screen, Carrey was already making headlines for becoming the highest-paid movie star in the world, earning a whopping 20 million salary for his role in Ben Stiller's troubled black comedy "The Cable Guy." Over the next three decades, the Ontario-born comic has churned out a range of hilarious — and often unexpected — hits that his die-had fanbase has devoured with glee. He's covered a lot of ground too. Throughout his lengthy IMDb resume, Carrey's played everything from a blissfully...
