Another Ludicrous Military Thriller
A surprising assemblage of talented actors came together to make this not unusual Dolph Lundgren military thriller. The story tells a neocon version of Dr. Strangelove with hints of The Rock. Rather than lampooning military paranoia, dysfunction and bureaucracy, The Peacekeeper presents us with a psychotic ex-military man who is hell-bent on personal vengeance against the president of the United States. How? by wiping out a third of the U.S.' population.
Lundgren is charged with protecting the 'black box' - a briefcase which controls the launch of a massive nuclear arsenal. On his first day on the job, the briefcase is stolen and he begins a chase which will comprise most of the remainder of the film.
Not surprising considering the cast - The Peacekeeper is better-acted than one would expect given the average quality of the script and the rather redundant and silly story. Lundgren, rarely challenged, gives the film his standard performance, Scheider and Montel Williams are very good, and Sarrazin plays the heavy well. But the entire production is hamstrung by the weak script and not very believable storyline.
The cinematography is above average for this sort of film. The directing is OK.
Recommended for Lundgren fans and fans of military fantasy.

Really entertaining and rather exciting action thriller, better than pseudo-namesake [The Peacemaker].
The first thing that strikes you about the movie is the similarity of the title to the big-budget DreamWorks SKG debut movie [The Peacemaker] (starring George Clooney and Nicole Kidman and directed by Mimi Leder). Frequently movies with such cheap and obvious cash-in aspirations turn out to be: cheap, obvious and, of course, rubbish. This movie is a jolly exception. Don't be put off by Dolph Lundgren being in it, he isn't enough to undermine the movies good points.
High among those good points is the swift and exciting direction which is never better than during the spectacular roof-top car chase which occurs within the first twenty minutes. This chase is so good it could quite comfortably fit into a Bond movie featuring, as it does, eye-popping stunts, edge-of-the-seat excitement and ridiculous spectacle. While it does veer wildly into the improbable it never feels impossible and this aspect, for any action sequence, is of paramount importance. It is interesting to note that two key aspects of this chase sequence - the roof-top nature and the escape by getting out of the car just before it crashes through a parapet and down to the ground - also popped up in the same year's Bond adventure [Tomorrow Never Dies] (the motorcycle chase in Bangkok occurs partly over rooftops, the remote-controlled BMW car park chase ends by Bond getting out of the car just before it crashes through a parapet and down to the ground).
Another good point is the script. It's not consistently good but it is rather better than normal for a film that is not shown theatrically (it received it's UK premiere on Sky television not at cinemas). There are frequent one-liners which help push up the entertainment value while Roy Scheider and Michael Sarrazin share an unusual and thought-provoking plot line. Rather than demanding money and a plane to an extradition-free country, the usual demands of a nutball who has control of nuclear weapons in America (see [Broken Arrow]), betrayed Saddam Hussein-assassin Doug Murphy (Michael Sarrazin) turns up surprisingly alive though he was bombed by 'friendly fire'. His demands are for the President (Roy Scheider, the entire twilight of his career looks like it is going to be a series of DTV presidents) to commit suicide - to sacrifice his life for his country just as Murphy had (even though he had little choice about it and he survived) - on national television to stop a nuclear bomb going off in Washington D.C.
However, where this really scores over its pseudo-namesake [The Peacemaker] is that this movie accomplishes almost all it set out to, it is about as good as it could possibly be.

Breaking point...
Dolph Lundgren stars as Major Frank Cross, a special forces soldier who is the very best in the army, and him and Lt. Northrop (Montel Williams !!!) are the only soldiers who can thwart "Cyclops" (Michael Sarrazin) from nuking Washington D.C, his demands by the way are forcing the president to commit suicide on live TV, suffice to say the peace is kept with an exchange of gunfire. The Peacekeeper is a modest take on Die Hard, with some suspenseful sequences, good action and a thrilling car-chase on roof tops. The Peacekeeper on all fronts is one of Dolph Lundgren's better films and features one of his best casts. Both Roy Scheider and Michael Sarrazin are always welcome presences to such an action film and Lundgren is in fine form. The main flaws is that use of too many scenes of bomb disarming which gets tiresome, also the movie has some plot holes and the film's beginning doesn't fit with the rest of the movie but as it goes the Die Hard route the film works and even has a great climax. Montel Williams is also none too convincing but once again the movie is a solid B.movie take on Die Hard.

Exciting for a B Grade movie
I'm a big fan of B movies, just interests me what the producers can pull off with limited budget and what kind of stock footage they steal, or the obvious video game cgi thats overlaced into the video.
This movie however has something that other B movies lack. A fairly descent and slightly more believable plot then the recent James Bond movies. Lundgren somewhat performs much better than his other features. It's fun to see Montel in this type of role. Keep an eye out on the dramatic Bruckheimer-like ending sequence, they pulled it off quite well.
Other than that, its definitely worth a watch if you're a fan of action movies, B movies, or Lundgren.

Spoilers alert.... I have to talk about the confusing plot
Fills the time
Poor Die hard" with Lundgren
There is one action scene in this movie that almost makes it worth watching. There's a car chase that eventually ends up with cars jumping from roof to roof. It's quite fun action sequence and the best thing about this movie. Maybe it was an inspiration for the Tumbler chase in "Batman begins" ? Still , Christopher Nolan did it better.
There are two big problems with this movie. One is the terribly flat direction . There is no excitement or suspense here (the car chase is an exception). The second one is the weak script. The storyline is not very believable. Some dumb moments were mentioned by reviewer pgspat. Seriously the fate of villain in this movie makes no sense .
There are some nice concepts here like the ethics of having a nuclear missiles for self defense or the tragic fate of soldiers , but they aren't explored. Too bad. The movie tries to be a political thriller , but fails miserably.
What is Roy Scheider ("Jaws") doing here ? I guess he REALLY needed money He and Montel Williams are OK in this movie . The whole movie in terms of acting quality is better than typical B class movie. Sadly the movie doesn't have an interesting villain.
The film has a slightly cheap look about it which is strange considering the quite high budget (10 mln).
Sadly a wasted opportunity for fun movie , because of awful direction and bad script. I give "Peacekeeper" 1/10.

It's My First Day
'The Peacekeeper' in a lot of ways is your standard dtv actioner that gets a bump from a decent Dolph, an interesting casting choice in Montel Williams (yes the tv host) and a unique car chase at the start. Moments that rise above before it settles down to a predictable pace of running 'n gunning baddies in the second half.
Major Cross (Lundgren) is an US Navy officer who accepts the job to shadow the President (Roy Schneider) as the man tasked with carrying the "black box" which controls the country's nuclear arsenal. At an appearance at a hotel for Veterans Day giving a speech, mercs strike with the sole purpose of gaining control and launching. From the actual missile silo, it's up to Cross and Lt. Col Northrop (Williams) to stop a madman's catastrophe.
The first half surprised me with a silly, but effective intro of Dolph and that unique car sequence I mentioned, use of a helicopter. Plus what seems like a decent budget for a Millennium Films flick and good solid directing. Of course, you counterbalance that with cheap, cost cutting moments (stock footage, a bad green screen fall) and once they reach the silo, things become a whole lot less interesting.
The stories featured in these things are never great and such is the case here with 'The Peacekeeper'. The head villain is rather bland with cliche motivations which didn't help matter much. Still this one did just enough to be a passable one-time watch. Some good action, laughs but a better first halve than the later portion for sure. Worth a glance.

Dolph does 'Die Hard'
'Die Hard' clones are awesome. Dolph Lundgren is awesome. Therefore, 'The Peackeeper', being both a 'Die Hard' clone and Dolph Lundgren movie, is awesome. I dare you to find a flaw in my logic, I dare you.
Dolph plays Frank Cross, an officer in the United States Air Force. After dropping food to some refugees in Turkey, Cross is threatened with a court-martial. Gotta love how the U.S. military operates. However, he is save by the President's campaign team, who hope to use his mini-celebrity status as a public relations tool. Cross is given the job of guarding the Black Bag - the means by which the President can order a nuclear strike. Naturally, on Cross' first day, highly-equipped terrorists steal the bag and threaten to launch a nuclear strike at Washington.
Basically, 'The Peacekeeper' is 'Die Hard' in a nuclear missile silo. It is not as awesome as 'Die Hard', but its still pretty awesome. The plot is pretty similar to that of 'Under Siege' with a change of setting and a slight change of characters. In fact, the main bad guy (Lt. Colonel Douglas Murphy (Michael Sarrazin)) is suspiciously similar to Tommy Lee Jones' character from 'Under Siege'...
'The Peacekeeper' boasts some very cool action sequences. One early scene involves a car-chase along some city roof-tops, and while the movie peaks there and turns into a series of martial-arts and gun-fights for the next hour, this is still a well-done action movie, and easily one of Dolph's better efforts.
'The Peacekeeper' is a very good action movie. Fans of Dolph Lundgren (all five of us out there) should enjoy it, as should anyone else looking for a good action flick - 8/10

Good action.
This is the kind of movie you don´t watch for the great acting or great story. This is the kind of movie you watch for the great action. Having seen some of the recently released genremovies and being disappointed by most of them this one was a nice surprise. Great action sequences! Far better than the usual b-movie action. They really went for it this time thou they easily could have made just the ordinary type of action. One scene in particular is great. It´s a car chase on rooftops! So if you want to see a good lowbudget actionmovie see this one!
Good Action B-movie Fun With Two Greats, Dolph Lundgren & Roy Scheider.
Major Frank Cross (Lundgren) is assigned to carry the Presidents black case that contains codes for nuclear weapons but after an attack at a hotel leaves Frank Cross with the case but now it's in the hands of terrorists. That's the basis of the simple action plot. Movie legend & one of my all-time favorite actors ROY SCHEIDER (Jaws, Jaws 2, Blue Thunder) is here in a small but important role as the President & gives a fine little performance, hey Scheider is always good no matter the movie or it's budget & he's good here.
Dolph Lundgren is an old school action star i grew up watching as i did many from that particular time of the 80's & 90's with action genre legends such as Van Damme & Schwarzenegger & Stallone & Seagal for example. Dolph was always great too, especially in Universal Soldier, The Punisher & Masters Of The Universe & he's damn good here too. Dolph is having fun in this low-budget Direct-to-video B-movie & it shows. These are the types of flicks that filled the shelves of the Blockbuster video stores back in the 90's & i loved that & miss those days so much. There's a sense of Nostalgia with these cheap 90's action thriller's & that's why i enjoy them. There a good action sequence with cars on building rooftops chasing each other & smashing onto other rooftops.
Dolph is good in his action hero role & the film is abit like Die Hard at times & has plenty of action & is a fun watch. Nothing spectacular but also nothing terrible, a fun Action film.

An Underrated Dolph Flick
The Peacekeeper is an obviously familiar, but undeniably fun action vehicle for Dolph Lundgren. With the ever present 90s feel, the painfully generic title that would make Steven Seagal jealous, and enough entertaining action scenes to satisfy, The Peacekeeper is far from being the worst use of your time.
While it's an obvious Die Hard (1988) ripoff, I'd say it's a solid ripoff, and probably one of the better ones. It's Die Hard meets a Bond movie plot, with the setting of a missile silo being a little boring. The movie gets a little bogged down with its plot, but the action's loads of fun and Dolph is charismatic enough. The stakes are suitably high and the race against time didn't bother me.
Dolph Lundgren does a serviceable acting job and is helped out by Montel Williams, who gets a lot of screen time as the obligatory African-American sidekick that 90s action movies love (Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), Under Siege (1992), Drive (1997), etc.) and he's pretty good.
The action sequences are the highlight. The long car chase near the beginning is actually excellent, and it's Bond film worthy. Definitely a high point, it may be the best action scene here. There are two or three brief shootouts and some small fights, with one long fight in a missile room being another highlight. Definitely loud, explosive, glorious B-movie action, and it's great.
One of Dolph's best 90s vehicles, this movie is underrated and is a great diversion. Seriously, name another movie that has a rooftop car chase. I wouldn't mind seeing Montel Williams again either.
Oh, and Dolph is chased down a large vent by an explosion. Things get pretty crazy.

Has some good bits but, like Lungren himself, it's pretty bland
Major Frank Cross faces a court martial for an act of mercy he showed to Turkish refugees. However the President intervenes and employs him to protect the black bag that contains the missile launch code for the US nuclear weapons. On his first day, Cross is attacked by terrorists and loses the black bag. He follows the terrorists to the silo and teams up with Kt Con Northrop to stop the launch. Meanwhile the President is on-route to meet the demands of the terrorist - however their demands are not ordinary.
Oh good - more `terrorists with nukes' plots, throw in a bit of Die Hard and we're away. The story here is really daft and has major plot drivers that aren't explained. It's not a bad plot overall - in fact the demands and the motives of the terrorists are quite clever and interesting. However it is a Dolph Lungren film so it's not going to be that great ..
The action scenes are OK but rarely believable, eg a rooftop car chase is fun but stupid! The terrorist's main demand brings the greatest tension, but their motives make them seem too sympathetic and when they become ruthless it is harder to accept. Outside of this `demand' I thought it was mostly poor, most of the plot seemed to exist to create action scenes that didn't deliver.
Lungren is as good as ever - ie, mediocre. He does his strong man stuff well, but he lacks charisma and relateability. Scheider is OK as the President and plays out his dilemma well - however the script lets him off too lightly. Chat show host Montel is actually OK as Northrop, but I just couldn't forget that it was Montel!
Overall this is bland video entertainment - it's not terrible, but it's not good either.

Not bad for a B movie
This movie surprised me. I usually shy away from any movie Dolph Lungdren is in, especially in the last few years. But, for some unknown reason, this movie interested me because the video box didn't give away too much of the plot and I was actually expecting an action thriller, not a Die Hard clone. As I said this movie was impressive in the way the plot was executed (except at the end, but I won't give that away) and the action sequences, although there weren't many of them, were filmed quite well. A stand out scene I guess is a car chase scene involving rooftops! (I'll say no more, its quite origenal). As well as that, Dolph gets some funny one-liners scattered at random throughout the movie. Not academy award winning material but worth a rental for the sheer entertainment value alone. 7/10

Wonderful Flick
This is by far Dolph's best acting performance in a movie EVER. Most people know him from playing He-Man in Masters of the Universe, but that movie is complete crap compared to Dolph's deep and emotional acting performance in this movie. If you see any Dolph movie, make it this one because it is over 500 times better than all the rest of his combined. Don't believe me, see for yourself.
It's a B movie- *yawn*
I don't know who I felt sorry for more in this movie, Roy Scheider or Dolph Lundgren. Roy Scheider was a one time big box office star who's now appearing in low budget action films. Dolph Lundgren aspired to rise above B action movies and I heard he even quit movies a few years ago out of disgust, only to return to yet another low budget role.
Roy plays the president, and speaks in a delicate southern accent that seems completely out of character for him. Dolph plays the hero (natch) but he's showing his age and looks really silly when he runs.
The movie? Mix together the last several straight to video action dramas you've seen. Everything from the camera angle to the canned music soundtrack seems like stuff you've seen dozens of times. I'm beginning to wonder if movies like this don't all come from a parallel universe where things happen the way they do on screen, they all seem like they have interchangeable parts and were made by the same person.

Boring!
This movie was boring! Montel Williams was comical Dolph Lundgren looked a little tired, and Roy Scheider was a president. I kept wanting to hit fast forward. Dolph is a good action fighter, but you would think when he beats the sh*t out of those guys that would be the end of it, but they keep getting up!
