We still don’t know who (or what) Travis Kelce is playing in FX’s “Grotesquerie,” but now we have a better look at his role thanks to the first trailer for the upcoming drama. The horror series from Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken will premiere its first two episodes starting at 10 p.m. on Sept. 25.

I recently recapped the fascinating Best Actor race of 2003, in which saw Sean Penn in “Mystic River” win the first of his two Best Actor Oscars. (He would prevail again five years later for “Milk.”)

A dedicated Gold Derby reader has since asked me how Depp managed to surprise at SAG. Figuring that others might be wondering the same thing, I thought that I would offer everyone in awards land my Top 5 reasons why. And here they are.

A limited series about the Sandy Hook shooting and the ensuing eight-year legal battle between victims’ families and gun manufacturer Remington Arms has landed at Echo Lake Entertainment. Oscar nominee Robin Swicord (“When They See Us”) and Sarah Koskoff will create the show in consultation with several families directly affected by the tragedy and their attorneys.
Swicord, Koskoff and producer Mary Jane Skalski of Echo Lake Entertainment are teaming as executive producers to tell the story of the Sandy Hook case, which uncovered how a New York private equity firm purchased legacy American gun companies in the mid-2000s, effectively creating the equivalent of Big Pharma in the consumer arms industry. Swicord and Koskoff have followed the case closely and are consulting with several families who brought the lawsuit, as well as their attorney, Josh Koskoff (Sarah Koskoff’s brother).

Bardem is already a two-time SAG Award winner thanks to “No Country for Old Men.” He claimed Best Supporting Actor for his chilling performance of Anton Chigurh, and the entire cast won SAG’s coveted Best Ensemble prize. Peter Dinklage is nothing if not soulful. The 52-year-old actor can do comedic, and charming, and a color palette’s worth of rage; in movies like The Station Agent (2003) or on any given Game of Thrones episode, you’ll likely get a lovely combo of all three. But give him the chance to communicate melancholia — let this veteran thespian unleash a sad-eyed look under a heavy brow — and you see an entirely different side of Dinklage come out. It makes perfect sense that he’d take on the title character...

Since the Screen Actors Guild Awards began handing out trophies for Best Film Actor in 1994, every single winner has gone on to receive an Oscar nomination. In just one instance, Benicio Del Toro in “Traffic” (2000), the SAG Awards winner went on to compete in the supporting category at the Academy Awards instead (he won that as well). According to Gold Derby’s 2022 SAG Awards predictions for Film Actor, the five nominees will be Will Smith (“King Richard”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”), Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”), Andrew Garfield and Peter Dinklage (“Cyrano”).
Smith’s performance as Richard Williams in “King Richard” comes in first place with 69/20 odds. Peter Dinklage’s musical interpretation of the “friend zone” took center stage at the Telluride Film Festival for the world premiere of “Cyrano,” and a leading Oscar contender for best actor appeared to emerge.
The premiere started with an actor’s tribute to Dinklage, which highlighted notable performances such as his Emmy-winning role in HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”
Once the film began, the crowd was elated with the music, orchestrated by Aaron and Bryce Dessner, who also composed another Telluride feature this year, “C’mon C’mon.” The anticipation for Joe Wright’s vision of the off-Broadway musical was felt throughout the day by attendees. After turning nearly 100 people away due to spacing, “Cyrano” will likely still be a hot ticket throughout the weekend.

Peter Dinklage may be one of the most recognizable actors working today, but that doesn’t limit his range. As a clip reel of his nearly 30-year career in film and TV proved ahead of a tribute on the first day of the Telluride Film Festival, Dinklage can play a sensitive loner (“The Station Agent”) just as well as an icy mob boss (“I Care a Lot”) and the anarchic schemer Tyrion Lannister from “Game of Thrones.” The screening of his new movie that followed a brief onstage conversation, “Cyrano,” also proved that Dinklage can sing.
Director Joe Wright’s lavish adaptation of the 2019 off-Broadway musical, written by Dinklage’s wife Erica Schmidt, finds the actor embodying Cyrano de Bergerac as a swashbuckling 17th century wordsmith who buries his attraction to childhood friend Roxanne (Haley Bennett) by helping an inarticulate guardsman (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) romance the woman by writing love letters for him.

Bleecker Street has secured North American rights to “The Loneliest Whale: The Search for 52,” a new documentary from Joshua Zeman. The film will be released in theaters on July 9.
The documentary centers on the “52 Hertz Whale,” which scientists believe has spent its entire life in solitude calling out at a frequency that is different from any other whale.
“The team of scientists and filmmakers take the audience on a wild search for this mysterious creature,” said Andrew Karpen, CEO of Bleecker Street. “They follow in the steps of the great intrepid explorers searching for nature’s wonders, but also a greater understanding of man’s place in the world and what we must do to ensure its survival.”
Bleecker Street recently released the “The World to Come,” a historical romance with Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby, as well as the Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci drama “Supernova” and the Julia Garner drama “The Assistant.

With the Golden Globes weighing in today with their choices, the Screen Actors Guild awards are next on the docket and have a stronger correlation to the Oscars.
A group of 2,500 randomly selected SAG-AFTRA members vote for the coveted awards, often resulting in an eclectic group of nominees. In past years, shocking inclusions like Sarah Silverman (“I Smile Back”), Emily Blunt (“The Girl on the Train”) and Peter Dinklage (“The Station Agent”) have shaken things up. They’re also known for their big omissions, like Clive Owen and Natalie Portman in “Closer,” who both won Golden Globe awards for their performances in 2005.
Could “Mank” lead the way as it did with the Golden Globes? Will “The Trial of the Chicago 7” assert itself as the most likely Oscar contender for Netflix? Can “Da 5 Bloods” and “One Night in Miami” bounce back after the HFPA gave it the shaft? Can...

Just like Beyonce and Jay-Z, four is the magic number for the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year. Nominations will be announced on Feb. 4 and the ceremony will be held on April 4 (which is also Bey and Jay’s wedding anniversary). And if our odds turn out to be correct, Chadwick Boseman will go into the record books as the first person to earn four nominations for film in a single year.
Boseman is in contention for the final two films of his too-short career, “Da 5 Bloods,” which came out two months before his death in August from colon cancer, and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” which was released in December. He’s in first place in the lead actor odds for “Ma Rainey” and in third place in supporting for “Da 5 Bloods.” “Ma Rainey” and “Da 5 Bloods” are both expected to score ensemble nominations — the former is...

Netflix has a late-breaking awards contender in “I Care a Lot,” which they announced only on January 15 would become available for streaming in the United States on February 19. The cutoff for awards is normally December 31, but it has been extended this year because of the global pandemic to February 28, which is also the date of the Golden Globe Awards ceremony.

Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: 842 in 2019; a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

Oscars Academy Class of 2020: Natasha Lyonne and 11 More Stars We’re Shocked Weren’t Already Members
It’s become a tradition every year when the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences invites its new members that we pour through the list of stars and Hollywood legends and look in amazement at how many big names were somehow not already part of the Oscars club.
This year, the Academy invited 819 new members, including a 2020 class that’s 45% women, 36% underrepresented ethnic/racial communities and 49% international from 68 countries.
The diversity is always welcome, and the Academy has done loads in recent years to attempt to diversify its ranks. In fact, we count 10 different actors and below-the-line crew members involved with the Best Picture winner “Parasite” joining the Academy this year. And other emerging stars like Awkwafina, Zendaya, Zazie Beetz, Brian Tyree Henry, Cynthia Erivo and more are all among those who will vote on the upcoming Oscars.

It’s been a year of change for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which has responded not only to the pandemic, pushing back the global ABC Oscars telecast from February 28 to April 25, 2021 — setting a new award season calendar as other award shows have followed suit — but the urgency of the Black Lives Matter movement.
In its continuing push to swell the Academy membership ranks, 819 artists and executives from 68 countries have been invited to join this year. The branches have increasingly actively sought eligible people to become Academy members, but the Board of Governors makes the final call. People from underrepresented ethnic/racial communities (36 percent) and women (45 percent) are among the many invites, as the Academy continues to address its long-term white-male dominance. As always, actors make up the largest branch of the Academy, but many new members (49 percent) also come from overseas.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 819 artists and executives to join the organization in 2020.
In doing so, the Academy continues its work on diversifying its ranks. If all 819 invitees accept their invitations, 45% of the new members will be women and 36% are from underrepresented ethnic/racial communities. International make-up is 49% from 68 countries.
“The Academy is delighted to welcome these distinguished fellow travelers in the motion picture arts and sciences. We have always embraced extraordinary talent that reflects the rich variety of our global film community, and never more so than now,” said Academy president David Rubin said in a statement.
In 2016, as part of its A2020 initiative, the Academy promised to at least double the number of women and underrepresented ethnic/racial communities by this year. “Through dedicated and intentional work by the Board of Governors and members on the branch executive committees, the Academy has surpassed both these goals,...

May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.
While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.
The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.
