Do you want to watch the "After" movies but you're not quite sure where to logistically begin? I may be able to lend a hand with that.
For the uninitiated, the "After" film series is based on author Anna Todd's book series of the same name — and the backstory here is actually pretty wild. Todd, who once wrote under the username Imaginator1D on the fanfiction site Wattpad, penned "After" as a story about a regular girl who ends up in a torrid, steamy romance with Harry Styles Fanfiction making the leap into legitimate literary territory isn't anything new; "Fifty Shades of Grey" began its life as a work of "Twilight" fanfiction, a fact that I cannot ever possibly unlearn. Knowing that the "After" series is about a very real person, though, might feel a little strange when you sit down to read or watch the stories.

In a three-part docuseries Anatomy of Lies, new details about the life and lies of Elisabeth Finch, the Grey’s Anatomy writer who infamously faked a cancer diagnosis, are revealed.
A seasoned TV writer with credits on shows such as True Blood and The Vampire Diaries, in 2012, Finch began to tell friends and colleagues that she had been diagnosed with chondrosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. She even wrote a now-removed essay for Elle about her unique experience with the disease, which caught the attention of an executive at Shondaland, Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes’ production company. Impressed with the essay, Rhimes offered Finch a writer’s spot on the ABC show, and Finch’s health issues were soon incorporated into episode storylines, which Finch wrote.
The truth about Finch’s diagnosis was first reported in March 2022, when The Ankler published the initial article that exposed Finch for fabricating her personal and medical history.

It’s that time of year again, when it’s fun to give a scare, or even get a scare. Many TV programs offer up a special Halloween episode, some with a light tone and others adding a little mystery, but some TV shows are spooky year round.
People have always been fascinated with the unknown, and “The Twilight Zone” was one of the first series to successfully offer up episode after episode of bizarre stories. In the 1960s, sitcoms like “Bewitched,” “The Addams Family” and “The Munsters” offered a comic take on movie monsters and the occult, while also giving lessons on acceptance. In the 1990s, “The X-Files” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” became huge hits, developing cult followings and leading to the popularity of series featuring supernatural forces. Writer Elisabeth Finch made headlines this week when it was revealed that the Grey’s Anatomy writer had faked her personal anecdotes about her illnesses and struggles with cancer, chemotherapy, abortion, and more. Finch had been actively publishing essays about her struggles while she was a part of the show and included many of them in the episodes.
With the Peacock docuseries Anatomy of Lies exposing Finch’s long con, the writer has been subjected to extreme scrutiny. According to Variety, Finch got the job to write for her favorite show Grey’s Anatomy after her essays on her struggles with chondrosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, got the attention of producer Shonda Rhimes.

Elisabeth Finch seemed to have it all: a career as a successful television writer with credits on hit shows like True Blood and The Vampire Diaries. But one thing was missing—a role on Grey’s Anatomy, one of the most popular medical dramas ever. When her attempts to join the writing staff didn’t pan out, Finch hatched an elaborate scheme.
She claimed to have a rare form of bone cancer and used that fictional illness to garner sympathy and advance her career. Finch’s deception only grew more extreme and destructive over time. Through persuasive lies and manipulations, she worked her way onto Grey’s Anatomy and even had some of her fake life struggles play out in the show’s storyline.

They say the truth will set you free, but in the case of Elisabeth Finch, it seems to have handed her a one-way ticket straight into the lion’s den. The docuseries, Anatomy of Lies, now streaming on Peacock, pulls back the curtain on a saga that’s as jaw-dropping as it is eyebrow-raising.
Drawing inspiration from a 2022 Vanity Fair article by Evgenia Peretz, this three-part series dishes out a smorgasbord of revelations that will have you questioning your own perceptions of honesty, particularly in Tinseltown.

Update: After this story published, Elisabeth Finch posted an apology for her past actions on Instagram.
Even before Evgenia Peretz’s two-part Vanity Fair story about the long con of former “Grey’s Anatomy” writer Elisabeth Finch went to print in 2022, her husband, filmmaker David Schisgall, was already warning her that Hollywood would snatch up this story if she didn’t.
“I remember sitting in our bedroom, and hearing more and more about what she was reporting and just saying to her: ‘This is a documentary. Either you are going to make it or someone else will,’” Schisgall tells Variety.
He isn’t wrong. As is repeatedly stated in “Anatomy of Lies,” Peacock’s new docuseries co-directed by Peretz and Schisgall, Finch’s story is tailor made for Hollywood. Grey’s Writer’s Horrific History of Falsehoods Gets a Full Dissection in Peacock Doc Anatomy of Lies
We knew that the story of disgraced Grey’s Anatomy writer Elisabeth R. Finch was bad. But we had no idea just how horrible it really was until we screened Peacock’s three-episode Anatomy of Lies documentary (now streaming).
Over the course of the three hours, the limited series hits us with one whopper after another, foremost among them being the lie that Finch was treated for chondrosarcoma, the type of cancer that she gave Debbie Allen’s Catherine Fox on ABC’s long-running medical drama. To sell her hard-luck story, Finch — who on Tuesday issued another mea culpa on social media — shaved her head,...

There are few things more embarrassing than being the victim of a scammer, especially publicly, and there are few things stranger than watching a docuseries about a scammer who personally scammed you.
Granted, I only spoke with Elisabeth Finch once about one episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.” But the whole interview was about how she wrote an episode featuring a storyline inspired by her own brain cancer. The headline was “Grey’s Anatomy’s Big Cancer Story Was Based on Very Real Life.” I had no reason to doubt that a writer on one of the biggest shows on TV was telling me the truth. I had no reason to believe that even my headline was a big fat lie. Why would one ever assume someone was lying about brain cancer? It would be disrespectful to even think about it.

Long before “True Blood” or “Twilight” brought vampires to small-town America, horror writer Stephen King imagined the creatures invading his backyard in rural Maine. Until then, bloodsucking bat-men were something only Europeans had to worry about, as Dracula and his castle-dwelling kin preyed on hapless villagers half a world away. Then came “’Salem’s Lot,” King’s second novel, in which the man who’d made witches a modern-day concern with “Carrie” asked American readers: What if an outbreak of vampirism struck your community?
A tepid new feature version returns to that question a half-century later, offering flashes of style and a more satisfying finale in an otherwise weak take on its dated source material. Whereas King seemed to be kicking another stuffy old genre into the present, writer-director Gary Dauberman’s retro-minded adaptation goes in the opposite direction, embracing the pageboy haircuts, polyester-blend duds and don’t-trust-anyone paranoia of that era.

Exclusive: Poppy Liu and Chris Bauer have joined the cast of Netflix’s Limited Series His & Hers in recurring roles. They will star opposite series lead and EP Tessa Thompson. Production is set to begin this fall.
The six-episode limited series from William Oldroyd and adapted from Alice Feeney’s novel is set in the sweltering heat of Atlanta where Anna (Thompson) lives in haunting reclusivity and is fading away from her friends and career as a journalist. But when she overhears about a murder in Dahlonega – the sleepy town where she grew up – she is snapped back to life, pouncing on the case and searching for answers. Detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal) is strangely suspicious of her involvement, chasing her into the crosshairs of his own investigation. There are two sides to every story, his and hers, which means someone is always lying.

Warning: The following post contains allegations of sexual assault and child abuse and discussions of suicide. For years, Elisabeth Finch crafted compelling stories as one of the writers and producers of the hit ABC series Grey’s Anatomy. But she was telling tales off-screen, too, lying to colleagues about having cancer and enduring various other traumas that turned out to be deceptions. Vanity Fair writer Evgenia Peretz covered Finch’s story in a two-part exposé in May 2022 titled “Scene Stealer: The True Lies of Elisabeth Finch.” Now Peacock is covering the scandal in a three-part docuseries, Anatomy of Lies, with Peretz on board as co-director and executive producer. So, ahead of that docuseries’ October 15 debut, what do we know about the real Elisabeth Finch? As Peretz’s exposé recapped, Finch grew up in New Jersey, moved to California, and eventually got a job as a writer on True Blood. Then came...

You can overhear a lot of weird things walking through the park, but an excited, sudden exclamation of “What if it was a horde of rats?!” is definitely up there. Yet the reason, in this particular case, wasn’t an ominous one: It was part of the brainstorming process for the opening title sequence for Netflix’s recent (excellent) adaptation of “The Decameron.”
Mark Bashore and Katrina Crawford were the parkgoers in question and the creative directors of Plains of Yonder. The studio began as a design firm in Seattle and developed an Emmy-nominated knack for crafting opening titles for television series — something they say lots of people assume gets scripted by the writers on a given series, but in actuality, creative studios like theirs get brought in and work with the showrunners to execute. Grey’s Anatomy fans are eager for the new season, but before that, Peacock is looking at a shocking behind-the-scenes tale of the hit drama! Here’s what you need to know about Anatomy of Lies!
Fans of Grey’s Anatomy know all about the shocking twists and turns the show takes with plotlines that often seem too crazy to believe. But it turns out that one of the most outlandish and outrageous storylines ever wasn’t on screen but happened in real life.
In 2015, Elisabeth R. Finch was a popular TV writer, having worked on The Vampire Diaries and True Blood (thus nicknamed “Vampire Girl.”) She was hired for Grey’s Anatomy, soon working her way up to writing 13 episodes and even guest-starred as a nurse in the acclaimed 2019 episode "Silent All These Years."
What got Finch the job was her moving piece in Elle magazine about her experiences with a rare type of bone cancer.

The case of Elisabeth Finch was one that shocked the entertainment industry, and now a three-part docuseries will bring the tale to a wider audience.
On Tuesday, the streamer Peacock revealed that it is finalizing a three-part docuseries on the saga of the former Grey’s Anatomy writer and executive producer, whose harrowing story of bone cancer inspired at least one storyline on the ABC juggernaut until it was cast into doubt starting in 2022. Anatomy of Lies will chart “the rise and fall of Grey’s Anatomy star writer Elisabeth Finch, whose jaw-dropping lies fooled Hollywood for years,” Peacock stated in a press release.
Prior to 2022, Finch was known as a successful TV writer — she also worked for True Blood, No Ordinary Family and The Vampire Diaries — who had been open professionally and publicly about significant alleged personal struggles. It’s hard to make a yearly awards show feel special when it’s staged twice in one year. Such was the challenge facing the 76th annual Emmy Awards, which aired just eight months after its warmly nostalgic predecessor due to the prior show’s strike-related delay. (Both shows were helmed by the same producing team.) Factor in the Television Academy’s tendency toward repeat honorees — and more recently, select shows to sweep all awards in their category within a given year — and it’s understandable why Sunday’s broadcast was a relatively muted affair. But drab is drab. Whatever the justifications, the 76th Emmys were a far less dynamic and more stilted watch than the January show.
Take the signature flourish of a night that was otherwise straightforwardly staged: grouping presenters by archetype of character, from fathers to villains to doctors, and surrounding them with custom sets and backdrops.

Fifteen years ago, Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson thought that, on the heels of True Blood and Twilight, vampires were becoming a bit overrated.
Luckily, they didn’t listen to that instinct when they forged ahead with an adaptation of L. J. Smith’s fantasy horror novel, The Vampire Diaries, for The CW.
The pilot aired on Sept. 10, 2009, and, not only was it a resounding success, putting up what at the time was the largest premiere audience since the network debuted three years earlier, it also spawned an entire franchise that would last more than a decade. The Vampire Diaries would also influence pop culture and the entire young adult genre in unpredictable ways — so much so that it’s still worth talking about seven years after the final episode.
“It feels like blip, and yet, like the longest 15 years of my life,” Plec told Deadline this week, reflecting on...

The Law & Order spin-off Organized Crime was meant to follow a different formula than other shows in the franchise. When helping craft the new spin-off, Wolf grabbed inspiration from some of cinema’s greatest gangster films.
Dick Wolf felt ‘Organized Crime’ had completely different storytelling from past ‘Law & Order’ shows Chris Meloni | Zach Dilgard / Getty Images
Law & Order has always been known for its episodic television. With the exception of a few story arcs, the series’ episodes tend to be very self-contained. This might’ve allowed new audiences to jump into the show at any point during the series without getting lost. Organized Crime took a different approach to this kind of storytelling.
As its title suggests, the spin-off would focus on crimes specifically tied to organizations like the mob. This allowed for Law & Order to branch out into more serialized storytelling. So much so that...

It’s been 15 years since audiences were introduced to Mystic Falls and its vampires, love triangles and teenage drama. And still, The Vampire Diaries holds a special place for many viewers.
Vampire Diaries premiered on The CW on Sept. 10, 2009, and ran for eight seasons,. Now, to celebrate the milestone anniversary, showrunner Julie Plec looks back on the series she created with Kevin Williamson and how it launched a supernatural franchise.
She recalls wanting to “tell a really emotional story that was sexy and romantic and scary and all the things,” while also creating “something that felt timeless, that could live on and continue to feel like anybody, any generation at any time can connect to it.”

And to accomplish that, Plec and Williamson knew they had to build a solid team that could produce stories with “creative integrity and that we’re deeply emotional and highly entertaining.”

Basing a show’s success on viewer satisfaction is a tricky proposition.
TV history is rife with bizarre and nonsensical occasions that make sense only within the numbers — sometimes, not even then.
Firefly is a legendary example of this. It had a loyal fanbase and critical acclaim, but Fox nonetheless cut its legs out from under it.
(Helen Sloan/HBO)
There are countless instances of relatively popular programs ending on massive cliffhangers, never to return.
Then there are the shows that audiences hate, yet a new season is in the works each and every year.
There’s a great deal of head-scratching here, so the ultimate answer is yes.
A show can succeed if viewers aren’t satisfied, and for several reasons that make more sense in context. The virulent nature of news, audience vs critical reactions, and, of course, money play their roles.

It’s rare for a series to start brilliantly, continue on that trajectory, and then stick the landing.
It’s why you typically hear those same TV series when people talk about the greatest of all time.
Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Sopranos, Seinfeld, and Mad Men — these series stayed consistent and kept audiences engrossed from start to finish.
(Will Hart/NBC)
Unfortunately, that’s not always the case across the board.
More than likely, a series never finds its footing or lives up to its potential. Or it’s inconsistent at best, with a sluggish start and better finish.
And sometimes a show starts wonderfully, with acclaim and devotion from fans, only to stumble somewhere along the way and never truly recover.

You’d think after eight seasons of being under the gun during production of “Game of Thrones” that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would have found luxurious the extended pandemic writing process for Netflix series “3 Body Problem.” But that’s not how Benioff experienced it.
“It didn’t feel that way,” he said on a Zoom with co-creator Alexander Woo. “We were champing at the bit. We had a year-long negotiation to get the rights but meanwhile the three of us were not only doing zooms, we actually started writing just because we were so antsy to get going. And then we had [the pandemic]: it took a very long time before we finally got on set. Even though we had all that time, we still ended up having to rewrite everything. And go back for reshoots. Like a first season of any show, you’re trying to figure it out.

“As an editor, you’re the first audience,” declares “3 Body Problem” editor Michael Ruscio about the essential role that his craft plays in shaping the narrative and amplifying emotion of every scene. For our recent webchat, Ruscio (who received his first career Emmy nomination to date for the Netflix sci-fi blockbuster) adds, “You’re also needing to continually shed, detach and look at it again, and then another time, and then another time,” he explains about the painstaking process of chiseling a scene into its final product. “Sometimes you’ll take the material home where you’re not in the editing bay, and then look at it there, where you can’t touch any buttons and see how does this work for an audience? I think you do have to trust the intelligence of the audience,” he says. “We didn’t feel like we needed to spell it out and...
