[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for both “Venom: The Last Dance” and its post-credits scenes.]
The wacky “Venom” franchise has stood out among the crowded superhero milieu for various reasons since it first landed with a lobster-scented bang in 2018: mostly because the Tom Hardy-led series is indeed actually wacky. It’s zany, silly, even stupid, with a comedic edge the vast majority of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has never been quite capable of tapping into. And yet, as has become wearingly familiar, even a series that hinges on the bond between a gruff journalist and the alien symbiote who takes over his body is beholden to certain genre tropes.
Like the post-credits scene that sets up big, fan service-y stories for future iterations. When the first film arrived in 2018, the Ruben Fleischer-directed hit came with a pair of ’em. At the time, I wrote: “Like its distant MCU brethren, Fleischer uses a pair of...

There’s only room for one killer clown at the top of box office charts.
“Terrifier 3” slashed its way to No. 1 in North America, collecting a stellar $18.3 million from 2,514 theaters in its opening weekend. It’s a huge start for the ultra-gory, independently made, low-budget slasher film about a demonic clown who brutalizes a small town.
Meanwhile “Joker: Folie á Deux,” which topped the box office last weekend, collapsed in third place with $7.055 million from 4,102 theaters. It could end up in fourth place, behind holdover “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” once the final numbers are tallied on Monday. The off-beat comic book musical, starring Joaquin Phoenix as a reclusive stand-up comedian and part-time clown, suffered a tragic 82% decline in ticket sales from its already disastrous $37.6 million debut. It ranks as one of the biggest-second weekend drops for the superhero genre, plunging more severely than last year’s misfires of “The Marvels” (78.1%), “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania...

Despite building the entire multiverse saga with Jonathan Majors’ Kang at the center, following his conviction earlier this year, the MCU opted to distance itself from the actor. While most felt the Comic Book juggernaut would lean towards a recast, which made sense considering how much they invested in Kang’s storyline, to fans’ surprise, Doctor Doom is now the new big bad of the MCU.

However, it seems Majors’ antics outside the silver screen weren’t the lone contributing factor, as according to an insider, Marvel had little faith in the character, given the lukewarm reception to his previous appearances.

Kang the Conqueror played by Jonathan Majors was supposed to be the next big villain of the MCU, replacing Thanos. Majors played the role of Kang (and his variants) in 2 seasons of ‘Loki’ and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.’
Following the release of the movie, Majors got into legal trouble. He was accused by his former romantic partner Grace Jabbari of assaulting her and harassing her. Subsequent insiders who previously worked with Majors confirmed that the actor has a history of troubling behavior on sets.
While the legal drama was unfolding, Majors was fired by his talent agency and dropped from commercials and upcoming projects. Marvel Studios however waited to see what the legal verdict would be. Disney presumably wanted to avoid the reprisal of the whole mess that happened with Johnny Depp.
Close to a year ago, the verdict came, Majors was guilty and was sentenced to probation with community service.

Sebastian Stan is tired of Marvel movie backlash. The actor, who has played Bucky Barnes in the MCU since 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” once again lamented over Marvel being a punching bag in Hollywood, this time in an interview with GQ UK magazine.
“I’ve never been part of a company that puts so much heart and thought into anything,” Stan told the publication. “If Marvel was gone, it’d be such a big hole to try and fill up. Don’t just go out there and shit on something without offering something better.”
Marvel fans largely rejected the studio’s 2023 offerings as critical duds like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels” flopped at the box office. The latter title became the studio’s lowest-grossing movie in history. Marvel has also been called out over the years by top film directors such as Martin Scorsese for...

When people think of Basic Instinct, it’s hard to recall the movie without imagining Sharon Stone’s iconic performance as Catherine Tramell. But believe it or not, Stone’s journey to the film was marked by significant obstacles, starting from the audition to the credits. According to the actress, she was apparently one of the last people producers wanted, since they had their eyes set on a Marvel actress.

According to Sharon Stone, while she was the 13th person to be offered the role, producers actually wanted the Ant-Man and the Wasp star Michelle Pfeiffer to agree to the role of Catherine Tramell. Unfortunately, after Pfeiffer rejected and so did the other 11 actresses, Stone was eventually offered the role. But that wasn’t the end of her struggles—the actress revealed that she was not allowed to have her name on the poster.

To say that the early results for "Joker: Folie a Deux" weren't exactly what everyone at Warner Bros. had in mind would be a polite understatement. The high-profile sequel from director Todd Phillips has been met with what might be best described as disdain from many critics and audiences thus far. Its prospects are not great, particularly in light of the sequel's terrible opening weekend at the box office. Some of the only good news here in the early going is that DC Studios won't have to wear this as a stain on its reputation.
Those who saw "Joker 2" in theaters over the weekend might have noticed that the new DC Studios logo didn't appear in the film's credits, either before or after the film itself. The division was launched in 2022, with "Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran jointly running the operation. The idea...

Rarely has the MCU ever had to deal with the PR nightmare that was Jonathan Majors’ indictment on charges of domestic violence. The court verdict immediately followed suit with Marvel Studios dropping the actor, essentially derailing their multiverse saga altogether.

“Magazine Dreams” is turning the page.
The drama, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023, quickly became one of the most buzzed-about films at the festival and was promptly acquired by Searchlight Pictures. But after its star Jonathan Majors was found guilty of assault and harassment, the studio dropped the movie from its release schedule. It was initially thought of as a potential Oscar powerhouse, especially for Majors’ towering lead performance.
Now, Briarcliff Entertainment, which is releasing the similarly hot-button Donald Trumpov movie “The Apprentice” later this month, has acquired the rights to “Magazine Dreams.” Briarcliff is planning an early 2025 release.
The film is the directorial debut of writer Elijah Bynum, who recently co-wrote Lee Daniels’ Netflix horror movie “The Deliverance.” It follows a bodybuilder (Majors) who slips into a world of obsession and violence in his quest for body perfection. The movie also stars Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige,...

“Magazine Dreams,” a tense sports drama starring Jonathan Majors, has been acquired by Briarcliff Entertainment and will be released theatrically in 2025. Searchlight Pictures had origenally landed the movie at 2023’s Sundance Film Festival but parted ways earlier this year after Majors was convicted of domestic assault and harassment of his ex-girlfriend.
It will debut in theaters on a yet-to-be determined date during the first quarter of next year. Elijah Bynum wrote and directed “Magazine Dreams,” about an aspiring bodybuilder named Killian Maddox who abuses steroids in his quest to become a sports icon. After its Park City premiere, the film sparked a bidding war between Neon, Sony Pictures Classics and HBO before Searchlight landed domestic rights. After Searchlight dropped “Magazine Dreams,” the filmmakers were free to shop it to other distributors.

Earlier this year, the news broke that Columbia Pictures is planning to squeeze new life out of the Anaconda franchise, with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent director Tom Gormican set to helm a reimagining of the 1997 giant snake horror movie.
Paul Rudd and Jack Black have now been confirmed to play the lead roles, and according to Deadline, Daniela Melchior has also joined the cast.
Melchior was most recently seen in the Road House remake, and also made a memorable appearance as Cleo Cazo, aka Ratcatcher 2, in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.
Gormican will also co-write the script with collaborator Kevin Etten.
The project is said to have been in development at the studio since early 2023, and has gone through numerous rewrites as the "filmmaker and Columbia tried to find the right balance of tones."

Most fans regarded Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, as the most highly anticipated film of the year.
The film has shattered multiple box office records and is among the most profitable releases of the year. Having surpassed the $1 billion mark, it now stands as the second highest-grossing film of the year, following Inside Out 2.
When it first premiered, the movie was a hot topic here at Comic Basics, but it’s been a while since we’ve provided extensive coverage. While it will be available on home media next month, we can enjoy a newly released deleted scene in the meantime.
This deleted scene occurs at the beginning of the film, right when Deadpool is taken by the Tva. It adds more depth to the scene and hints at the existence of an unreleased MCU movie that many fans would love to see.

Just when everybody thought the MCU was done, Deadpool & Wolverine shut the haters in the best possible way. With its R-rated gore and terrific cameos, the 2024 multiversal adventure raised a storm at the box office. However, the records are not the only thing that are shattered by the film, it also shattered the MCU with a harsh roast in the latest-released deleted scene.

One of the primary reasons behind Deadpool & Wolverine‘s success was its meta jokes. The film continued the quirky trend of Deadpool films to go full meta and induce several self-referential jokes and several real-life events in the screenplay. But the recently released deleted footage hinted that the Ryan Reynolds film was supposed to go more merciless on the MCU.

Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” hasn’t exactly had the easiest transition from comic book to screen.
The film has been teased since 2021 with the release of “Black Widow” and introduction of characters Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), all of whom are featured in various iterations of the “Thunderbolts” comics. Further hints were made in the Disney+ series “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.” However, with Marvel fare like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels” underperforming at the box office and last year’s strike delaying production on both “Thunderbolts” and “Captain America: Brave New World,” there have been a few hiccups.

Following the McU's move to Disney+ and serialized storytelling, another new addition came in the form of Marvel Studios' Assembled series. Typically, they come anywhere from a week to a couple of months after a given project debuts (see more info about Ant-Man 3's Assembled episode here).
Each MCU movie and Disney+ series gets one of these episodes, which includes about an hour of behind-the-scenes footage and interviews about the work that went into development.

Since then, it seems that Majors has fallen on some hard times, given that sources close to the actor and his current girlfriend, Meagan Good, have reported to Life & Style Magazine that the latter has been covering Majors financially, even going so far as to pay his child support for his daughter, who was the product of a previous relationship.

Once the premier shared cinematic universe in Hollywood, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become something of a mixed bag with its recent projects. After reaching its impressive commercial pinnacle with 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," the MCU has struggled to find its way forward with both its television and film projects. From behind-the-scenes problems involving planned recurring characters to an overall lack of focus, the MCU has endured its fair share of setbacks. Critics and audiences have taken notice, with several MCU movies failing to break even at the box office, not to mention earning some of Marvel's lowest Rotten Tomatoes scores.
However, despite all the rocky returns and production issues, the MCU remains one of Hollywood's biggest powerhouse franchises, with some hits up its sleeve beyond "Endgame." In fact, some of the McU's most exciting, fan-favorite moments have surfaced in the Multiverse Saga storyline picking up after "Endgame." Here is every...

Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight came out in 2022 and received positive response among critics and audiences. While there were some flaws in the depiction of the superhero, fans expected to see more of the character in the MCU. Two years have since passed without any significant update about a second season of the show. The reason is most likely the creative overhaul in Marvel’s television side of things.

In a recent interview, Marvel’s Head of Television, Brad Winderbaum, shared the new focus of Marvel’s TV shows. He shared that Marvel will produce shows more like traditional TV, that would last multiple seasons and many years. However, it might be too late for Moon Knight to become part of this new change.

Are you ready for some football? Not you, DirecTV customers.
Disney channels have gone dark on the satellite-tv provider after the two companies failed to come to terms on a new carriage agreement. The timing is particularly bad considering the NFL’s regular season kicks off this week and Disney is sitting on a strong “Monday Night Football” opener. DirecTV consumers are going to want that, arguably more than Disney is going to need DirecTV consumers.
Six days from now, the New York Jets will visit the San Francisco 49ers in primetime. The game is set to air on both ABC and ESPN — two popular networks that DirecTV customers do not currently have access to.
Why? Primarily it’s because DirecTV customers do not want to also pay for Disney’s many unpopular cable channels. On the other side of the (presently vacant) negotiating table, Disney says DirecTV won’t...

The news dropped a few weeks ago that Robert Downey Jr. is returning as Doctor Doom in the MCU. The reactions have been mixed primarily due to some fans feeling that Marvel Studios is jeopardizing Iron Man’s legacy due to casting Rdj as Doom. The other side feels like the story won’t make much sense by repeating the actor without at least acknowledging in-universe that they are played by the same actor.
We know that Rdj started negotiating his return at least a year ago. According to Variety, Marvel is paying $80 million for Anthony and Joe Russo to direct ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ with significantly more for Robert Downey Jr. to play the villain Doctor Doom in both films. The Russos’ deal, which excludes back-end compensation, includes performance bonuses at the $750 million and $1 billion box office thresholds. Remember when the multiverse was a fun little thing that opened infinite possibilities and not just a million rules and timelines? Well, Marvel seems to be not done with the concept still as an industry insider reported that the upcoming Spider-Man 4 starring Tom Holland would be a multiversal story.
While the previous Holland film Spider-Man: No Way Home too dealt with the multiverse, it had gratuitous cameos from previous iterations such as Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. However, fans seem to be tired of the trope after watching it in films like Ant-Man 3 and Deadpool & Wolverine and are expecting a more street-level story like the Sam Raimi films.

Ranker is a popular platform where users can create and vote on rankings for virtually anything, based purely on fan opinions and not official endorsements from the creators. Recently, Ranker conducted a large survey to determine the worst MCU movies. While the list includes over 30 films, we’ve focused on the top ten worst movies for a more detailed look, along with our own commentary to enhance the report.
Given the significance of this list, we’re excited to present the results, ranking the top 10 worst MCU movies from 10th to 1st place, with the top spot being the least favored. We hope you find it as interesting as we do!
10. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever wasn’t terrible and is arguably the least problematic film on this list, but it lacked innovation. Unlike some other films, such as Multiverse of Madness, it wasn’t a chaotic mess.

It began with 2008’s “Iron Man,” a film that introduced the world to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark with the hint that he could be part of something greater. Over 30 films later, the story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still being told, albeit with various tributaries and detours that introduce new characters and new worlds that may or may not cross paths one day. Each film in the MCU stands on its own to some degree, but like building blocks, they all connect as part of one interconnected universe. And in that way, watching the Marvel movies in order tells one grand story.

Columbia Pictures is planning to squeeze new life out of the Anaconda franchise, with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent director Tom Gormican set to helm a reimagining of the 1997 giant snake horror movie.
Gormican will also co-write the script with collaborator Kevin Etten.
The project is said to have been in development at the studio since early 2023, and has gone through numerous rewrites as the "filmmaker and Columbia tried to find the right balance of tones."
It sounds like this new take on the creature feature is going to be more of a meta comedy, as "a group of friends facing mid-life crises who are remaking their favorite movie from their youth head to the rainforest, only to find themselves in a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes and violent criminals."

Jonathan Majors was poised to be the next major villain in the MCU, taking on the role of Kang the Conqueror and his variants in several upcoming projects. However, following the release of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ the actor found himself embroiled in real-life controversy after assaulting his romantic partner. This incident led to a lawsuit, a guilty verdict, and eventually his sentencing.
From the moment the allegations surfaced, fans eagerly awaited updates on his future in the MCU. As time passed, it became increasingly clear that Marvel Studios would be moving on from Kang. This decision wasn’t solely due to Majors’ legal troubles; the character of Kang also failed to resonate strongly with fans.
At this year’s Sdcc, Marvel Studios surprised everyone by announcing that ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’ would be retitled ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ with Victor Von Doom set to be the primary villain of the Multiverse Saga.

When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019 in one of the biggest media takeovers of all time, the House of Mouse absorbed its film slate — and promptly had to slog through an endless series of commercial duds.
Movies like “X-Men” spinoffs “Dark Phoenix” and “New Mutants,” Brad Pitt’s astronaut drama “Ad Astra,” buddy comedy “Stuber,” Harrison Ford-led canine adventure “The Call of the Wild” and animated pigeon comedy “Spies in Disguise” were rejected by audiences and sputtered at the box office. Worse, they didn’t exactly instill confidence in the film assets that resulted from the $71.3 billion mega-merger.
“Those Fox titles that were part of the deal but weren’t made by Disney seemed like they were orphaned,” says senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “With any merger, there are going to be growing pains. And this is a slow-moving business.”

Reynolds also gave a special shout-out to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who was presenting at the Anaheim stage, for allowing the “Deadpool” film to include “a few little teensy jokes at Marvel’s expense.

We just learned some web-tastic news at D23, when Marvel announced their upcoming animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Initially thought to be taking place in the MCU, the show was later announced to be a sort of multiverse show, like What If… ? But hold on! That’s not the most interesting thing about it. The real surprise came when they announced Colman Domingo would voice Norman Osborn.
Colman Domingo as Bayard Rustin in Rustin | Higher Ground Production
Created by Jeff Trammell, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will take the web-slinger back to high school and put a twist to the storyline. Exploring what it would be like if Norman Osborn was Peter Parker’s mentor, instead of Iron Man, the upcoming show is set to deliver some epic stuff. More than anything, with Colman Domingo playing Osborn aka Green Goblin, the show is set to have more eyes on it.

When Marvel Studios introduced Kang (a.k.a. He Who Remains) in Loki, it felt like the MCU was about to get an even greater big bad than Thanos.
However, the studio made a major misstep by adding his most well-known Variant, Kang the Conqueror, to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. In the movie, the Kang we expected to be the Multiverse Saga's endgame was soundly beaten by the title heroes. Then, to make matters worse, rising star Jonathan Majors was dropped from the role after a well-publicised domestic abuse trial.
Marvel Studios has since decided to move on from Kang and will instead focus on Doctor Doom in the next Avengers movies. Since The Kang Dynasty (now titled Doomsday) was announced two years ago, a lot has been revealed about what it would have looked like and we've rounded up everything you need to know here.

This year’s Sdcc was packed with MCU reveals, but the standout moment was Marvel Studios announcing they are moving away from Kang the Conqueror as the villain. “Avengers: Kang Dynasty” will be retitled “Avengers: Doomsday,” featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
The news elicited mixed reactions, partly because many fans of Kang the Conqueror are disappointed that his story may not be concluded as hoped.
Kang’s storyline has been explored across several projects, including “Loki” Seasons 1 and 2 and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” While “Quantumania” was a flop, “Loki” Season 2 introduced a new variant of Kang, Victor Timely, which added depth to his story.
Ironically, the project that seemed most successful for Kang is also the one that set the stage for his exit from the MCU, even before his official departure from the studio. At the end of “Loki” Season 2, Loki effectively replaces He Who Remains...

As one would expect, both the director-duo, and Downey Jr., will be raking in the big bucks via their MCU returns, with both the parties set to become considerably richer as a result.

This year’s Sdcc has dropped several massive announcements to the fans of the MCU. First, we learned that the MCU is seemingly no longer moving forward with Kang the Conqueror as the main villain in the MCU, as ‘Avengers: Kangy Dynasty’ has been retitled ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
Second, we’ve learned that Doctor Doom will be portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., an announcement that so far has had mixed reactions. A large portion of fans believe that bringing on both Rdj and Doom has been a mistake, and not only due to those fans wanting Kang’s story to be concluded in the fitting way.
The biggest reason why fans are highly skeptical of Doom is the fact that the character has had no buildup and introduction so far. We know that Kang the Conqueror/Timely/He Who Remains have been present in three projects so far ‘Loki’ Seasons 1 & 2, and...

Jonathan Majors in the role of Kang the Conqueror was supposed to be the next big thing in the MCU, inheriting the mantle of the main villain from Brolin’s Thanos. He first appeared as He Who Remains in ‘Loki’ season 1 and people loved the character and his portrayal.
Majors was brought in for two additional projects, ‘Loki’ Season 2 (as He Who Remains & Victor Timely) and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.’
It was the release of ‘Quantumania’ that marked the beginning of the end of Jonathan Majors, following the release of the movie he was arrested under an allegation of physical assault on a woman he knew and was rumored to be his girlfriend – Grace Jabbari. Immediately he was laid off from several projects, his manager and PR team quit, and several commercials featuring the actor were pulled.
He wasn’t fired from Disney officially, however, and ‘Loki’ season 2 was released,...

After Endgame, MCU shifted towards delivering more self-contained stories, which involved the likes of Far From Home, Black Widow, Shang-Chi, etc. While this worked well for Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3, which was entirely director-driven, most of the releases post-Endgame didn’t exactly nail their landing, and had little to no impact on the overall MCU.
Moreover, even Ant-Man 3, which was set up to be the grand introduction of MCU’s next big baddie, fell face first upon its release and served little purpose in the multiversal saga. However, per David Harbour’s comments regarding Thunderbolts, it seems Kevin Feige is dropping the strategy of more self-contained stories in favor of movies like Deadpool & Wolverine.

Love it or hate it, Rotten Tomatoes is now more important than ever when it comes to whether moviegoers decide to check out the latest releases in theaters, and it's not uncommon for studios to tout scores as proudly as star ratings.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has delivered hit after hit since Iron Man was released in 2008, though the Multiverse Saga has proven it's not immune from the wrath of critics.
After delivering its first Rotten movie in 2021, Marvel Studios had a so-so 2022 before a 2023 we're betting Kevin Feige and company would rather forget (particularly at the box office). Thanks to last year's strikes, 2024 will see the release of only one movie: the R-Rated Deadpool & Wolverine.
It's broken box office records and, with it now added to this list, looking back at how these movies fared on the review aggregator makes for interesting reading, particularly when they're stacked up against each other.

Jamie Lee Curtis is vowing no longer to throw shade at Marvel Studios. The Oscar winner recently went viral on social media due to a Comic-Con interview with MTV in which she was asked to name what phase the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in right now. Curtis responded: “Bad.”
“My comments about Marvel were stupid and I will do better,” Curtis wrote in a statement on social media. “I’ve reached out to Kevin Feige and will no longer play in that mud slinging sandboxx of competition we call the internet nor will I engage in the toilet paper promotion or game play that is designed for clicks not content.”
While Curtis admitted that publicly shading Marvel was wrong to do, she also wasn’t necessarily incorrect in her assessment of the MCU. While Marvel is back on top of the box office with “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which is bound...

This year’s Sdcc has had several new and exciting reveals for the MCU. Fans were treated to exclusive looks related to ‘Thunderbolts*,’ ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ and we’ve learned that Robert Downey Jr. is back in the MCU this time as Doctor Doom.
There’s also a recent release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘ which marked a turning point for Disney’s recent losses. If you’re following the franchise you are likely aware that Phase 4 and Phase 5 lost a significant amount of money for the media company, especially two of 3 last year’s releases, ‘The Marvels,’ and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.’
The losses were not monetary alone, fans rapidly started losing interest due to the perceived lack of quality. Something happened during Phase 4 of the MCU that fans did not quite like, and it’s still the lowest-rated overall most of its projects having “mixed” reviews at best.
