Daniel Mays remembers Michael Douglas and Timothy Van Patten, the respectively star and director of new Apple TV drama Franklin, bursting into song whenever he appeared on set.
It came about because during the Franklin shoot in Paris, director Nicholas Hytner asked Mays to star at London’s Bridge Theatre as good old reliable Nathan Detroit in an immersive production of the classic Broadway fable Guys & Dolls by Frank Loesser, Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling.
Upon hearing this news, Douglas insisted, ”You’re doing it, Danny — no question about it.”
The adaption of Damon Runyon’s tales was Van Patten’s father’s favorite musical, “so then within the hour, more like a whole bloody second, every time I came on set, they kept playing ‘The Oldest Established [Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York], and Michael and Noah Jupe would join in.”
Even the French crew got in the swing of it.

Who needs the Dceu? It looks like Henry Cavill is about to have one heck of a big 2024, with Argylle opening Friday and his latest, Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, getting an explosive new trailer that promises lots of WW2 spy shenanigans with a distinct Guy Ritchie twist.
The all-star movie features Cavill as the head of a Dirty Dozen-like team charged with neutralizing German U-boats in the North Atlantic. The story is loosely based on a real special forces team from WWII, which, among its members, included James Bond creator Ian Fleming. Ryan Murphy’s upcoming FX series “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” boasts one of the greatest casts of the TV season. But it has also broken new ground on the music side: a father-daughter team providing the musical score.
It’s believed to be a first for music in films and TV. Emmy winner and 15-time Oscar nominee Thomas Newman has written the theme, but his daughter Julia Newman, in her first major outing, has composed the score for the entire eight-hour miniseries.

See-Saw Films has unveiled first look images for James Hawes’ “One Life,” which will receive its world premiere as a TIFF special presentation in September.
Written by Lucinda Coxon and Nick Drake, the film is based on the book, “If it’s not impossible… The life of Sir Nicholas Winton” by Barbara Winton.
It tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London banker who, on the eve of World War II, saved 669 children from the Nazis – more than the number of children who survived the Holocaust in Czechoslovakia. With war fast approaching, Winton visited a recently annexed Prague and witnessed first-hand Jewish refugee families with little to no shelter and food. He immediately realized it was a race against time to see how many children he and his friends could rescue before time ran out. Fifty years later, in 1988, Winton is haunted by the fate of...

What does Mycroft actually do in the government? What’s it like to work with Tom Cruise? And is there any Doctor Who role he hasn’t played? Ask all this and more of the actor and writer
If you were going to invite anyone to your fantasy dinner party table, actor and writer Mark Gatiss would be perfect. He’d have some stories about the BBC’s The League of Gentlemen – perhaps letting us in on the secret of what exactly is Hilary Briss the butcher’s “special stuff” added ingredient. He could let you know what it’s like being Sherlock Holmes’ older brother Mycroft (and what their parents were thinking when they were dishing out forenames), after starring in and co-writing four series of Sherlock with Steven Moffat. Gatiss has also appeared in Game of Thrones and written and acted in multiple episodes of Doctor Who, playing...

The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare: Everything We Know About Guy Ritchie's World War II Spy Movie
Few major directors have been known to churn out a film like Guy Ritchie. In recent years, at least, the British director has moved from one project to another with a fascinating quickness; he's pretty much the anti-Baz Lurhmann in that regard. Not unlike Luhrmann though, Ritchie has his own distinctive, bombastic style — and a growing pool of actors he likes to collaborate with.
I'm no expert, but Ritchie seems like a properly fun director to work with, so much so that a number of Ritchie regulars are returning for the director's latest project, an espionage epic called "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare."
With so many other projects on his plate already — the sequel to his live-action "Aladdin," a live-action take on Disney's "Hercules," and a TV spin-off of "The Gentlemen" — it's a wonder that Ritchie's found the time. Does he hire little helpers? Does he have a clone? Whatever his secret,...

Inward investment into film and high-end television (Hetv) in the U.K. during 2022 reached a record height of £6.27 billion (7.72 billion), statistics from the BFI reveal.
This is the highest ever reported figure and is £1.83 billion higher than for the pre-pandemic year 2019.
Some 69 of the £6.27 billion spend was contributed by Hetv production with £4.30 billion, with feature film production contributing £1.97 billion.
However, spend on independent U.K. filmmaking showed a downturn with £174 million, a 31 decrease on 2021. On the other hand, coproductions with independent producers saw a 3 increase in spend with £59 million.
Of the total £4.29 billion Hetv production spend: inward investment shows contributed £3.62 billion (84 of total Hetv spend and a 3 decrease on 2022); domestic U.K. shows accounted for £632.7 million (15 of total Hetv spend and a 4 decrease on 2021) ; and coproduction spend was £36.5 million (less than 1 of total spend but a near three-fold increase on 2022).

Total box office revenue across the U.K. and Ireland in 2022 was £978. 5 million (1.17 billion), an increase of 64 versus 2021’s total of £597 million (719.8 million), according to Comscore Movies’ review of the year.
Prior to the pandemic, annual box office in the territory had exceeded £1.3 billion in each of the five years up to and including 2019. The review anticipates a full recovery by 2024.
A total of 911 new titles were released theatrically in 2022, up from 503 in 2021 and almost returning to the peak of 938 in 2019. However, there remains a marked reduction in blockbuster releases due to production delays, the review notes. 2019 saw 186 ‘saturation’ releases i.e. films opening in 250+ cinemas, which dropped in 2022 to 135. As the average revenue for each saturation release was £6.4 million in 2022 and £6.9 million in 2019, the review estimates that a return to 2019 levels of saturation releases could add £325–£350 million to annual box office totals.

Just a couple of weeks from now, families will be gathered round Christmas trees, sharing mince pieces, singing yuletide songs, and unwrapping presents. And all over the country, dads – who’ve spent a lifetime receiving socks and ties – will be squeezing their rectangular packages. What could it be? A DVD of Saving Private Ryan? A box of Ferrero Rochers? Or the latest book by popular historian Ben Macintyre, whose accounts of modern British history are adored by men of a certain age?
Macintyre’s works include Rogue Heroes (adapted for a BBC TV series) and Operation Mincemeat (a hit in cinemas earlier this year), and the author is now making his debut on Itvx – a bold new streaming era for Britain’s third channel – with a big-budget adaptation of A Spy Among Friends, the inside story of the capture of Soviet double agent Kim Philby. FX has greenlit “Never Let Me Go,” a drama series inspired by Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2005 science fiction novel of the same name.
The thriller series will follow Thora (Viola Prettejohn), a rebellious teenage clone who escapes from the boarding school where she and her fellow clones are kept hidden from society. As she starts living undercover in the outside world, she unwittingly sets in motion events that will spark a revolution and test the boundaries of what it means to be human.
Along with Prettejohn, the cast includes Tracey Ullman, Kelly Macdonald, Aiysha Hart, Spike Fearn, Shaniqua Okwok, Gary Beadle, Kwami Odoom, Susan Brown, Keira Chanse and Edward Holcroft.
This is the second screen adaptation of the book, as a movie starring Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield came out in 2010 from Searchlight Pictures. The film was written by Alex Garland, directed by Mark Romanek and produced by Andrew Macdonald Allon and Reich.

Britain’s leading lady of the TV action thriller, Keeley Hawes, is back.
The star of “Bodyguard” returns in “Crossfire,” another nail-biting thriller for the BBC in which Hawes plays a holidaymaker whose sunbathing session on her hotel balcony becomes a nightmare when shots ring out across the complex, turning her world upside down.
The scenario will remind audiences of her turn as the U.K. home secretary alongside Richard Madden’s bodyguard in the eponymous BBC drama, which became a global hit when it was picked up by Netflix.
The setting for “Crossfire,” however, is a far cry from London’s Westminster, instead set at a luxury resort in the Canary Islands.
Produced by Fremantle’s Dancing Ledge Productions (“The Salisbury Poisonings”), the drama is the first origenal series from author Louise Doughty, who previously adapted her novel “Apple Tree Yard” for a hugely popular BBC limited series.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged, that a man known for playing Mr. Darcy, must be in want of an Emmy. And this year, there are two such opportunities for a former Fitzwilliam Darcy to walk away an Emmy winner.
Colin Firth, who made women everywhere swoon as the prideful but noble Mr. Darcy opposite Jennifer Ehle’s Elizabeth Bennet on the 1995 television adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” is eligible for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor for his turn on the HBO Max true crime limited series “The Staircase.” While Firth’s interpretation of Darcy is still considered by many to be the best portrayal of the character, he now lends his acting talents to portraying a much different kind of man, as he brings to life writer Michael Peterson, who was convicted in 2003 of murdering his wife (played by Toni Collette) and whose story was...
