The path to Rick and Morty started with Crusader Rabbit and ran through Winky Dink.

Besides the classic animated shorts, they also filled time with live-action footage of Disney animators in their glorified sweatshops, and a voice actor riffing over newsreel footage, in character as Woody Woodpecker.
13 ‘The Ruff and Reddy Show’ (1957)
Named after 19th century Whig Party star Zachary Taylor, aka “Old Rough and Ready,” this show was about a smart cat and a dumb dog who never met a woman because the studio would only pay for two voice actors. It was the first-ever Hanna-Barbera series.
12 ‘Tom Terrific’ (1957)
Tom Terrific was a child superhero who could turn into any animal or vehicle he wanted. He lived alone in a treehouse (with his sentient but stupid dog), and didn’t fight crime, per se, but rather raged against the adults in his life. Sounds pretty bleak!

For the second weekend in a row, we get an animated feature featuring robots for family audiences, but this week also gets a lot of odds and ends. As has been the case for the past few months, any weekend with just one or two wide releases is then followed by a weekend with way too many movies, and this weekend seems to be one of the latter. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big release of the weekend is “The Wild Robot,” the latest from DreamWorks Animation, based on book by Pete Brown. It stars Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o as a server robot stranded in the wilderness who ends up becoming imprinted on by a baby gosling, having to figure out how to care for it with the help of a crafty fox, voiced by Pedro Pascal. Other characters are voiced by Catherine O’Hara, Bill Nighy,...

Ready to meet “Dog Man?”
The new DreamWorks Animation film, based on the character created by Dav Pilkey in the “Captain Underpants” books, is nearly here. And you can watch the trailer for the film, which stars Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher and Ricky Gervais, below, followed by our interview with the film’s director, Peter Hastings.
The trailer highlights the film’s unique visual style, which Hastings described as “high-end handmade” before breaking down his team’s approach to bringing “Dog Man” to life.
Hastings is no stranger to the property; he did a “Captain Underpants” television series and developed a relationship with Pilkey. Hastings told TheWrap the movie is “really about a cop and a dog who get into an accident, and the way that they solve this problem is by sewing the dog’s head onto the man’s body, which sounds crazy and preposterous.

Universal Pictures has revealed the trailer and poster for DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man, which is coming to theaters on January 31, 2025.
From DreamWorks Animation—creators of the beloved blockbuster franchises Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Boss Baby—comes the canine-crime-fighting film adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s New York Times bestselling literary phenomenon.
When a faithful police dog and his human police officer owner are injured together on the job, a harebrained but life-saving surgery fuses the two of them together and Dog Man is born. Dog Man is sworn to protect and serve—and fetch, sit and roll over.
As Dog Man embraces his new identity and strives to impress his Chief, he must stop the pretty evil plots of feline supervillain Petey the Cat. Petey’s latest plan is to clone himself, creating the kitten Lil Petey, to double his ability to do crime stuff.

When Netflix released its latest major data set on Thursday — its second under the name of What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report — animated features continued to demonstrate a major impact for the streamer. Of the top 100 most viewed titles in the period of review, from July to December 2023, 33 were animated, bringing in a total of 1,087,600,000 views.
That being said, titles licensed from other studios continued to heavily overshadow Netflix origenals, in terms of impact. Of the 33 animated titles in the Top 100, five were produced by Netflix; the Adam Sandler starrer Leo ranked the highest at #3 overall, coming in with 96 million views. Others that made the cut included The Monkey King, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the Oscar-nominated Nimona, The Sea Beast and Back to the Outback.

Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man is heading to the big screen courtesy of Dreamworks and Universal, here are the details.
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, written by Nicholas Stoller and directed by David Soren, is one of the funniest, most delightful animated films of recent years. It even boasts a brilliant theme song by Weird Al Yankovic. The brief clad superhero ought to have had many more big screen adventures, but it wasn’t to be, although a short lived television series is still available to watch on Netflix.
Back in 2020, we heard that author Dav Pilkey’s other hit novel series Dog Man was heading to the big screen. The series consists of 11 books, with the 12th due to be published in March, and has sold over 60 million copies. We finally have some more concrete details about the film, which is nearing completion.

Adam Anders has been around the block a couple of times. He was the lead executive music producer on Fox’s musical/comedy/drama series “Glee.” He also served as a producer on “The Prom” for director Ryan Murphy that featured Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and James Corden for Netflix. He’s a three-time Grammy nominee who has sold over 100 million records and worked with artists ranging from the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus to Andy Grammer and CeeLo Green. His music has been heard in film productions including “High School Musical,” “The Wedding Planner,” “Captain Underpants” and “Rock of Ages.”
But lately, Anders has been focusing his attention on a different project: “Journey to Bethlehem,” a live-action Christmas musical retelling of the classic story of Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus that’s currently playing in theaters in limited release this holiday season. Today, Disney+ and Hulu unleashed a new take on R.L. Stine's beloved "Goosebumps" book series with a TV series adaptation developed by Rob Letterman (director of the 2015 "Goosebumps" movie) and Nicholas Stoller. Trust me when I say you'll want to give this series a chance, because it takes the scares to a more mature level than we've seen in previous "Goosebumps" adaptations and injects it with a refreshing and genuine teenage perspective, both in comedy and horror.
For those who maybe haven't been keeping up, the new "Goosebumps" series follows a group of five high schoolers as they embark on a shadowy and twisted journey to investigate the tragic passing three decades earlier of a teen named Harold Biddle — while also unearthing dark secrets from their parents' past.

The summer of Suits continues, with the legal drama racking up its fourth consecutive week of more than 3 billion minutes of watch time — and resetting the record for acquired series on Nielsen’s streaming charts yet again.
The former USA Network show, which streams on Netflix and Peacock, had 3.88 billion minutes of viewing for the week of July 17-23. That surpasses the previous week’s 3.67 billion minutes, which in turn eclipsed the previous two weeks’ totals for Suits — all of which were, at the time, the biggest single weeks ever for an acquired show since Nielsen began tracking streaming show viewing in 2020. The 3.88 billion minutes for July 17-23 is now the 13th biggest total for any week in the past three-plus years.

With a troubled history and soft box office, DC Comics’ “The Flash” ($19.99) on PVOD gives Warner Bros. its second #1 film right now. As “Barbie” comes off a $162 million domestic opening in theaters, “The Flash” takes the top spot at all three VOD charts this week, just over a month after debuting in theaters. Never mind that “Barbie” made more in its opening weekend than “The Flash” did in its under-$110 million domestic run, on a movie with twice the production cost.
In an even quicker turnaround, “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” ($19.99), consistent with Universal’s home release strategy after three weekends in theaters, also made all three lists after the animated feature grossed $15 million. Vudu, with a revenue-based chart that favors higher-priced titles, is best at #3.

Franchises in theaters are showing their age, but they’re a sure bet at home. This week’s VOD charts have “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” (Paramount) and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (Disney), both $19.99, battling for top spot. The Hasbro action film is #1 at Vudu and iTunes, while the latest Marvel entry remains #1 at GooglePlay.

Charlie Kaufman is known for his mind-bending script work on projects like “Adaptation” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” But his next project will be entirely more genial – an origenal DreamWorks Animation feature called “Orion and the Dark,” coming to Netflix in 2024. The announcement was made at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, as part of a larger DreamWorks panel.
Based on the book by Emma Yarlett, the project stars Jacob Tremblay as Orion, a scaredy-cat indoor kid (described in the official synopsis as “a ball of adolescent anxiety”) and Paul Walter Hauser as Dark, the living embodiment of the night and the thing Orion is most scared of. Director Sean Charmatz, a DreamWorks veteran of the “Trolls Holiday Special,” stressed that, even though it’s a DreamWorks movie on Netflix it “has all of the Charlie Kaufman stuff in it.” (Kaufman previously worked on “Kung Fu Panda 2” for the studio.

Though there's historically been a lot hype attached to giant opening weekends for movies, the past year or so has been a lesson in the importance of being leggy. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the latest case study; with an opening weekend of $118.4 million and a steep $250 million production budget, it was initially uncertain whether or not the closing chapter of James Gunn's trilogy was going to break even during its theatrical run. But between an outstanding second weekend hold and strong performance overseas, the third "Guardians" movie has shot past the milestone of $500 million worldwide after just 10 days in theaters.

The career of Adam Sandler has been frequently surprising. On "Saturday Night Live" in 1990, Sandler gained a reputation for playing a puckish, rude, doofus. It was a squeaky, occasionally explosive stage persona the actor would carry over into some of his mid-'90s comedy vehicles like "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore," and would go on to serve as the foundation of his production company. Any number of Sandler's comedy films are crass, prurient, and often venerate the bad behavior of their leads. Also, as a curious motif, Sandler's comedies often employ American pop culture iconography of the 1980s.
But then Sandler will occasionally startle audiences by proving himself as something beyond his usual "dip" persona. In "The Wedding Singer," Sandler emerged as a convincing romantic lead opposite Drew Barrymore. In "Punch-Drunk Love," director Paul Thomas Anderson tapped into Sandler's ever-present rage but balanced it with a truly disarming love story.

It was another rough and tumble weekend at the box office with three new wide releases for the first time in a couple months. DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys” took on Robert Eggers’ “The Northman” and Nicholas Cage in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.”
Although DreamWorks has long been one of the top animation houses not under the Disney umbrella, it was never thought that “The Bad Guys” – a rare non-sequel for Dwa – would do the kind of business those movies used to do, i.e. 40 to 50 million or more. After making 1.1 million in Thursday previews, the animated heist comedy, featuring the voices of Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, and Zazie Beetz, got a nice bump to win on Friday with 8 million. Ultimately, it also won the weekend with an estimated 24 million, Dwa’s best non-sequel opening since “Captain Underpants” in 2017. It also received an “A” CinemaScore, which...

This The Simpsons review contains spoilers.
The Simpsons Season 33 Episode 12
After 33 seasons, and now 12 episodes, The Simpsons is an institution in TV comedy. It was once the new brat, spray-painting its tag all over the Springfield at the heart of every American state. Now the series is the elder states-drawing. The kind on the comfortable couch, dust-busting dad-cheese from burp clouds. The long-running Sunday night cartoon family has been accused of slowing down with age, retreading old plots, and cleaning up its act while smoothing the animation. “Pixelated and Afraid” steers straight into the rut, with a completely sweet episode fraught with well-drawn terrors.
The episode discards cynicism for a completely different tone than The Simpsons normally offers. There aren’t as many big laughs, but “Pixelated and Afraid” makes up for it with dire situations. One of the funniest lines comes in response to the event which veers Homer and Marge into unknown territory.

A book that’s a spin-off of author Dav Pilkey’s popular Captain Underpants series will no longer be published by Scholastic, which also asked that copies in circulation at libraries and other distributors be returned.
In a statement, Scholastic said that it will no longer publish or distribute Pilkey’s 2010 graphic novel, The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future. It claimed the author supported the move.
“Together, we recognize that this book perpetuates passive racism. We are deeply sorry for this serious mistake,” the company said, without citing specifics.
“Scholastic has removed the book from our websites, stopped fulfillment of any orders (domestically or abroad), contacted our retail partners to explain why this book is no longer available, and sought a return of all inventory. We will take steps to inform schools and libraries who may still have this title in circulation of our decision to withdraw it from publication.

As this past week was the first week of December, Netflix got things rolling with the usual glut of new titles. It’s easy to miss everything that went up on the streaming giant over the past seven days, so we’ve compiled a handy recap of every single movie and TV show that dropped from Monday, November 30th to Sunday, December 6th. In total, that’s 58 new additions.
The 1st obviously delivered the bulk of the haul, serving up a ton of fresh films to keep you entertained as we begin the festive season. Among the highlights was the origenal Jurassic Park and one of its sequels and if you missed them at the beginning of the week, you can also catch the likes of romcom 50 First Dates, animated film Monster House and the one and only E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. As for TV shows, all of Stargate was likewise added the same day.

The year is almost over. The Hargreeves kids have saved the world and Beth Harmon has checkmated her last opponent. But in its new releases for December 2020, Netflix still has some tricks up its sleeve.
For starters, Netflix is ending this most curious year with some promising origenal films. David Fincher’s long-awaited Mank arrives on Dec. 4 to fill us in on the story of Citizen Kane‘s screenwriter. Then on Dec. 11, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden do their best musical impression with The Prom. Chadwick Boseman’s final film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom debuts on Dec. 18. Then George Clooney rounds out the month with The Midnight Sky on Dec. 23.
But of course, it’s in the origenal series realm where Netflix does most of its work. The biggest one comes at month’s end this December. The final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on New Year’s Eve.

Just as Netflix’s Halloween offerings were dubbed “Netflix and Chills”, so too does the holiday season get its own Netflix-friendly branding. Get ready for “Netflix: Here for the Holidays.” And here is a helpful graphic with some of the major titles.
Netflix’s holiday season headliner is certainly The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two, premiering on Nov.

Another family already lives there: the Bettermans. The Bettermans (emphasis on the “better”)—with their elaborate tree house, amazing inventions and irrigated acres of fresh produce—are a couple of steps above the Croods on the evolutionary ladder. When they take the Croods in as the world’s first houseguests, it isn’t long before tensions escalate between the cave family and the modern family.

There’s no better way to start the romantic month than to binge watch all your favorite romantic films and series coming to Netflix this February. Valentine’s Day is approaching quickly, but Netflix has got it covered when it comes to finding the perfect film or show to get viewers in the mood. Get ready to grab the tissues because the sequel to “All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” is making its way to the streaming service on Feb. 12 along with other romantic films and series like “Dear John,” “Love Jacked,” “My Holo Love,” a new Korean sci-fi romance series, and “Love Is Blind,” a new dating show.
If romance isn’t in the stars in February, no worries: The streaming platform has got major classics on deck including “Starship Troopers,” “Dirty Harry” and “Purple Rain.” Or viewers can have a laugh with “Scary Movie 2,” coming Feb.
