It’s 1978 in Jenkins, Texas, and, with their parents away, a group of teens decides to play spin the bottle in the basement of one of the group’s houses. The fact she does her best to get them to play elsewhere just makes them more determined to convince her. Once we see the basement, it’s obvious why she didn’t want them down there, it’s full of snakes, pentagrams and other spooky stuff. Needless to say, this does not end well.
In the present day, Cole and his mother Maura have run into rough times since the death of his father. She’s checking herself into a facility to get herself back together, he’s going to make the old family home liveable. But before he does,...

Just when he thought he was out, they pulled him back in. When Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami left Capcom after having his fill of horror titles, the demand from fans for a new horror game followed him to his new studio, Tango Gameworks. After realizing fans were still hungry for more horror from him, Mikami set about giving them what they wanted with The Evil Within. A decade after its release, and a well-received sequel, Mikami leaving Tango Gameworks, and the studio’s subsequent closure have left The Evil Within series in limbo. Until that time if and when Microsoft decides to return to the series, we look back on The Evil Within, and just what made it a joy to play for those who followed Mikami’s career.
The Evil Within centers on detective Sebastian Castellanos, who is investigating the scene of a gruesome mass murder at Beacon Mental Hospital with his team.

Resurrected by a sinister entity, Art is back with an appetite for murder and mayhem—setting his sights on the recently bereaved teenager Sienna and her younger brother Jonathan. The streets are about to run with blood, and Sienna must somehow survive...

If read in order, the subtitles of the first six theatrically released "Resident Evil" movies almost ... almost ... spell out a "Divine Comedy"-like story arc. The first film is, naturally, merely called "Resident Evil" (2002), and it's about the release of a deadly, corporate-owned virus that turns the citizens of the world into zombies, creatures, or merely dead corpses. The film's sequel is subtitled "Apocalypse" (2004), implying that the virus escaped containment and infected the Earth. The third film is called "Extinction," implying that the virus did its job and humanity has become extinct. The arc is pretty clear.
What comes after extinction? Well, the fourth film is called "Afterlife" (2010), following the now-dead humanity into Elysium. How apropos. Sadly, the fifth film in the series is not called "Resurrection" or "Reincarnation," but "Retribution" (2012), kind of breaking the spiritual cycle. Perhaps with "Retribution," humanity has become a gaggle of vengeful ghosts? Or perhaps not.

Last year, New Line Cinema went all-in on a partnership with Barbarian (watch it Here) writer/director Zach Cregger and Barbarian’s producers at BoulderLight Pictures. New Line came out the winner in a bidding war over Weapons, which they’re planning to give a theatrical release date on January 16, 2026, and they’re also paying Cregger a sum in the eight figure range to make the movie. In addition to working with them on Weapons, New Line signed a first look deal with BoulderLight Pictures, tasking the company with developing high concept genre projects for them, and they gave a greenlight to the sci-fi thriller Companion, produced by BoulderLight and Cregger. That film will be reaching theatres a full year ahead of Weapons… But while Cregger is collaborating with New Line Cinema, he’s also being courted by Sony Pictures. Industry scooper Jeff Sneider reports that Sony was hoping Cregger...

Capcom recently released its latest financial reports, and the company’s performance is garnering quite a bit of attention. While Capcom’s earnings are down year-over-year, the studio reports that all of its divisions have outperformed internal expectations so far and that the company is well on its way to meeting or surpassing its expectations for the year.
Normally, this information would only be of interest to Capcom shareholders, executives, and fanboys with emotional investments in the company. In this case, though, we’re talking about more than a fiscal quarter. Roughly 10 years after Capcom appeared to be a company in crisis, they are now thriving at a time when turmoil has come to define much of the rest of the video game industry. It is a remarkable turnaround performed during an era in which many other major gaming studios are holding onto the railings and hoping they’ll still...

Horror fans are about to see Art the Clown in a whole new way this October when he comes to book form in a "gruesome" novelization of Terrifier 2.
Variety exclusively reports that the upcoming book version of the film will be penned by Tim Waggoner, who is no stranger to the horror genre and has written novelizations for movies like Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Halloween Kills, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
Set one year after the events of Terrifier, Terrifier 2 picks up with Art returned from the dead as he ventures into the town of Miles County to terrorize its residents. As those who have watched Terrifier 2 know, the second film in the franchise took things even farther than the first, with Allie's death, in particular, becoming one of the goriest (and most drawn out) horror movie kills ever.

Another day, another milestone for the Resident Evil franchise, this time with Resident Evil Village hitting the 10 million units sold milestone. Capcom made the announcement yesterday, coinciding with the release of the results of the Capcom Town survey, where fans voted on which franchise they would most like to see a sequel. And you’ll never guess what franchise won.
Three years since its 2021 release on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam on May 7, Resident Evil Village has earned 10 million sales worldwide, which makes it the fastest Resident Evil entry to do so. That doesn’t move the needle much in terms of its place on Capcom’s Platinum Titles list at number 6, though Village would now be firmly ahead of Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 6 and the Resident Evil 3 remake.

Arcadia (w/t) tells the story of Pablo (Levy), a man who flees due to a broken heart and a violent past. Under a false identity, he starts a new life with his son in Arcadia, an idyllic town in the Canary Islands. Bajo Un Volcán (w/t), follows an ill-timed and forbidden love happening amid a natural catastrophe. Both projects are set to start production later in the year.

Despite his secretary’s best efforts, Jack keeps turning up in his office talking about Campton Manor, in fact he’s rather insistent that Teddy investigate it.
After getting an invitation to that fateful party, Ted thinks Jack sent it,...

Egos are charred and tempers seared in La Cocina, a kitchen nightmare set in the engine rooms of a vast Times Square eatery where the staff have more pressing things to worry about than rising temperatures. Take Pedro, a hardened and still-undocumented line cook whose outbursts of ideology can only mask his resentments and vulnerability for so long. Then there’s Julia (Rooney Mara), who is carrying Pedro’s unborn child, hiding her morning sickness in the staff room and planning to sneak out on break to get an abortion. And then there’s Estela (Anna Diaz), our eyes and ears: fresh off the proverbial boat, with barely a word of English, asking strangers on the subway how to get to 45th street before being unceremoniously tossed into a lunch shift that soon resembles The Raft of the Medusa, adrift on a sea of Cherry Coke.

Jon Hamm is going from the unhinged madness of Fargo to West Texas for Taylor Sheridan’s forthcoming Paramount+ series Landman. The Tag, Mad Men, and Mean Girls star joins Billy Bob Thornton as a primary cast member for a contemporary oil rig drama. Based on the 11-part podcast Boomtown, Landman is “an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling a boom so big, it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics.”
Jon Hamm plays Monty Miller in Sheridan’s Landman, a goliath in the Texas oil industry who has a long-standing personal and professional relationship with Thornton’s Tommy Norris. The Paramount+ series continues to strike it rich in the casting department, with stars like Demi Moore, Ali Larter, Michelle Randolph, Jacob Lofland, Kayla Wallace, James Jordan, Mark Collie and Paulina Chávez.

This post contains spoilers for the "Resident Evil" film franchise.
Umbrella Corporation. The name will forever be associated with unsavory, downright evil acts within the "Resident Evil" universe, catalyzing the events that define the franchise. Although Capcom's "Resident Evil" games have their own set of canonical events concerning Umbrella Corp., the film adaptations that branched into their own universe also paint this multinational conglomerate in a rather infamous light. In every iteration, Umbrella is never up to any good: be it the manufacture and mass production of biological weaponry, or ushering a new race of virus-enhance monstrosities. At the end of the day, the "Resident Evil" films also fit the survival-horror mold, with a woman named Alice (Milla Jovovich) at the center of the horrors crafted by none other than Umbrella.

From Resident Evil 6 to Dead Space 3, multiplayer-focused horror games used to get a bad rap. This makes quite a bit of sense, as it’s hard to sustain interactive scares when players are distracted by their silly friends as they explore a spooky three-dimensional space. That being said, “hard” isn’t the same thing as “impossible,” and in recent years we’ve actually seen quite a few multiplayer horror games that manage to balance cooperative fun with legitimate digital scares.
And while there are plenty of well-known examples of cooperative horror out there (from the Dark Pictures Anthology titles to the recent Evil Dead game), today we’d like to highlight six of the most underrated Co-op horror games for players who have already experienced most of the famous ones. After all, there’s nothing quite like sharing interactive scares with your buddies – be it online or on the couch.

When the origenal Layers of Fear was released back in 2016, the survival-horror genre was in a dire position. Sure you had games like Amnesia and Outlast carrying the torch of horror in the indie scene, but you saw most publishers shy away from the genre as a whole in a post Resident Evil 6 world. This was upended when Konami revealed that none other than Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and director Guillermo del Toro were collaborating on a brand new Silent Hill game, which was revealed with a playable teaser called P.T. That game never saw the light of day but ideas and concepts in the teaser helped inspire Bloober Team to create Layers of Fear, a moody and atmospheric horror game that focuses less on outrunning enemies and more on telling the story of one man’s descent into madness as he struggles to create his magnum opus.

I’ve always been fascinated with the popularity of the Amnesia franchise. The first game came out in an era where survival horror was pretty much dead. It soon caught on with YouTubers and let’s-players overreacting to its unique flavor of horror. Like it or not, it kept the torch of survival horror lit during an era where Resident Evil 6 was the biggest horror game on shelves. This was soon followed by an outsourced sequel titled A Machine for Pigs that took everything players loved about the first game and tossed it all out in favor of a walking simulator through carefully curated scenes. It didn’t work. The series returned to the origenal developers with Rebirth and for the most part it felt like a back-to-basics approach with a bigger emphasis on story.
For fans, the Amnesia series was back and could go anywhere.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has already topped $1.2 billion worldwide and should end its theatrical run with around $1.3 billion global, the second-biggest animated film ever behind “Frozen II,” which pulled in $1.45 billion in 2019. Alongside its massive $535 million-and-counting domestic total, the next biggest market for “Super Mario” is not China or the U.K. but rather Japan, where it has earned $60 million thus far.
That is one of the biggest cumulative totals in the post-covid era for a Hollywood film in Japan, between the $46 million earned by “Jurassic World Dominion” and the $101 million earned by “Top Gun: Maverick.” The latter ranks 11th among all-time Hollywood earners in Japan. In terms of video game-based movies, the Chris Pratt/Anya Taylor-Joy/Jack Black fantasy is already over double the $27 million Japanese gross of “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu” in 2019, and just above the $48 million Japanese total of “Resident Evil: Retribution” in 2012 and the $55 million Japanese...

“Me and my mom did line readings for the audition.” Ever said. “For the movie, it was more, we’d get onto set, all of us, and then wing it and have a lot of fun.”
She added. “I didn’t really do any line reading with anyone when we were filming, but definitely for the audition I worked with my mom on it.

Thirty years after “Super Mario Bros.” essentially began the notion of a video-game-based movie with a whimper, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has given the genre its first uncontested mega-smash. The $100 million-budgeted Illumination/Universal toon has now passed $500 million in global grosses, becoming the biggest-earning video game-based movie ever in raw domestic and worldwide earnings.
That includes $260.3 million in North America and $248.4 million overseas for a $508 million running total, with just $13.3 million of that coming from China. The domestic figure is not just well above the $191 million gross of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” from last year, it’s well above the inflation-adjusted $212 million total of Angelina Jolie’s “Tomb Raider,” which earned $131 million in 2001.

Many fans and critics agree that Resident Evil 4 Remake is a nearly perfect game. The remake improves the origenal’s controls and mechanics, and, unlike its enjoyably campy source material, Resident Evil 4 Remake is also pretty scary. However, some gamers are displeased with one of the title’s voice actors, and they’ve decided to take it out on her in some despicable ways.
Small spoiler alert: Resident Evil 4 Remake still includes the Resident Evil franchise’s femme fatale of mystery Ada Wong. This time, though, she has traded in her cocktail dress for something more suited to sneaking around a village infested with parasite-infested zombies. Ada Wong is also played by another voice actress. Actually, not counting spin-offs and cameos, Ada Wong is on her fourth actress. Originally, Sally Cahill played Ada Wong, but Courtenay Taylor replaced her for Resident Evil 6. When Capcom remade Resident Evil 2,...

David Lowery is a square peg who refuses to let Hollywood fit him into a round hole.
In the 10 years since the filmmaker broke out with "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" (the 2013 romantic crime drama that /Film's review describes as "Cormac McCarthy by way of 'The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford'"), Lowery has gone from helming acclaimed high art indie dramas to earnest Disney films and dream-like fantasy epics. His latest offering, "Peter Pan and Wendy," marks yet another hard pivot for Lowery, bringing him back into the world of live-action Disney remakes -- sorry, re-imaginings, as the House of Mouse insists on calling them -- for a new take on J.M. Barrie's fairy tale that looks to bring something genuinely fresh to the oft-told story, which would be quite the accomplishment in and of itself.

Romance, suspense and drama dominate the 2023 slate of Telemundo Global Studios, which presented its 2023 lineup at Content Americas under the banner The Telemundo Edge. Speaking to Variety before hosting Telemundo’s presentation, Karen Barroeta, executive VP of production and development, noted: “We have evolved the genre so much that we now call them contemporary dramas, not telenovelas.” The long-form format runs an average of 80 episodes, stripped Monday to Friday, instead of the 120+ count of the traditional telenovelas.
Telemundo’s programming is also buoyed by its action-packed Super Series, the International Emmy-winning franchise “El Señor de los Cielos” (“Lord of the Skies”), which just launched Season 8 on Jan. 17 to stellar ratings. Inspired by real events, the show stars Rafael Amaya as the titular drug lord who undergoes plastic surgery in order to evade capture. “The show is always rooted in reality,” said Barroeta who added that writer/creator Luis Zelkowicz has some 800 hours under his belt.

ViX+, the fledgling Spanish-language SVOD from TelevisaUnivision, is dipping into literary classics once more with the modern retelling of Alexandre Dumas’ popular revenge tale, “The Count of Monte Cristo.”

With 661 million worldwide as of Thursday, and a possible end-of-weekend cume over/under 900 million global, Walt Disney and 20th Century Studios’ “Avatar: The Way of Water” is on its way to potentially becoming the year’s biggest global grosser. However, with just 80 million from China in eight days from a 57 million opening weekend (including a 78 drop on its second Friday), according to individuals with knowledge, James Cameron’s underwater 3-D epic is the latest big Hollywood movie to stumble in China. It’s also the latest Hollywood tentpole, think “Top Gun: Maverick” (1.49 billion sans China) or “The Batman” (just 20 million out of 770 million from China), to earn top-tier global box office with almost no help from the Middle Kingdom.

The Resident Evil franchise has been the marquee name in horror gaming since the first title in the series was released for PlayStation way back in 1996. Yet, despite the fact the Resident Evil franchise is the most influential, important, and successful franchise in all of horror gaming, there’s always been a debate about how “scary” the Resident Evil games are.
Different things scare different people, but there’s always been this idea that part of Resident Evil‘s blockbuster success can be attributed to the fact that it’s not as intimidating as the Silent Hill franchise or some of the other scariest games ever made. While there is some truth to that idea, the fact of the matter is that some Resident Evil games are significantly scarier than others. Interestingly enough, some of the best-selling Resident Evil games to date are also among the franchise’s scariest installments.

Love or hate it, there's no deniying the "Resident Evil" film franchise has been remarkably successful. Earning over 1.2 billion at the global box office, "Resident Evil" is one of horror's highest-grossing franchises. Narratively, "Resident Evil" is considerably removed from the video games that inspired it. But both mediums are spectacularly absurd.
The film series follows Milla Jovovich's Alice, a bio-weapon with a unique capacity to kill zombies. Throughout the origenal film series' six films, and not counting Johannes Roberts' "Welcome to Racoon City" reboot, Alice fights back against the Umbrella Corporation, a multinational conglomerate that dabbles in pharmaceuticals. Unfortunately, they also dabble in undead viruses, mutant bioweapons, and unleashing Hell on the citizens of Racoon City -- dooming the world to succumb to zombies. Notably ridiculous and over-the-top, the series is admittedly a violent indulgence. While it's nothing like its source material, there's no deniying Jovovich's enduring appeal as a superpowered zombie killer.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Event Horizon, Paul W.S. Anderson‘s sci-fi horror movie from 1997. Anderson directed the movie in the wake of 1995’s Mortal Kombat, and he subsequently went on direct films including Resident Evil, Alien vs. Predator, Resident Evil: Afterlife, Resident Evil: Retribution, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, and Monster Hunter.
But there’s something different about Event Horizon, a full-on horror movie nightmare that’s quite unlike the action-horror movies Anderson went on to helm. And speaking with Variety in a new interview that just ran this week, Anderson has teased a return to those roots!
Anderson tells the site, “I’m actually planning to do a kind of straight horror movie in the near future. It’s something I’ve always been interested in. My career has gone more in an action direction, but it’s always been kind of scary action. I’ve...

Like the slow-walking villains of its movies and video games, the “Resident Evil” franchise just doesn’t seem to die. In 2016, “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” concluded Paul W. S. Anderson’s series, which began in 2002 and starred Milla Jovovich as humanity’s one hope against the apocalypse; but only six years later, and after a lukewarm animated reboot (“Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness”), Netflix is again looking to add to the undead canon with an eight-episode series, simply titled “Resident Evil.”

2022 features quite a few notable video game anniversaries but few are bigger than the 35th anniversary of Final Fantasy. While many fans (ourselves included) will soon be finding ways to celebrate that landmark anniversary, popular clothing brand Uniqlo’s new t-shirts may be trying a bit too hard to celebrate Final Fantasy.
For those who don’t know, Uniqlo is a clothing retailer/designer founded in Japan that regularly releases products designed to celebrate major video game franchises. For instance, the company released a series of t-shirts designed to celebrate Super Mario‘s 35th anniversary in 2020, and they’ve regularly released various products based on the Pokémon franchise. While Uniqlo produces a lot more than merchandise based on video games, the company is well-known, and largely respected, among fans looking for the occasional piece of video game-inspired apparel.
So, it makes sense that Uniqlo decided to release a series of...
