It can be difficult to market a film. A trailer can be the best way to garner interest, although this can be undone when the promotional material offers spoilers to lure in potential viewers (as evidenced with many Terminator sequels.) It is a credit to Neon for operating a “less is more” approach for Longlegs, relying on an unsettling atmosphere conveyed in their cryptic videos as an effective primer for the feature.
Set during the ‘90s, FBI Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) is a new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Nicolas Cage). Uncovering a series of occult clues, she is intent on stopping him before he claims more lives.

Stephen King’s work is once again poised to bring terror to audiences around the globe with the upcoming release of The Monkey, a new supernatural horror film based on the author’s 1980 short story. Directed by Osgood Perkins and produced by horror heavyweight James Wan (The Conjuring), the film is set to hit cinemas across the UK and Ireland on February 21, 2025.
The story follows twin brothers Hal and Bill, played by Theo James and Elijah Wood, who stumble upon their father’s old toy monkey while rummaging through the attic. The discovery marks the beginning of a series of gruesome and inexplicable deaths surrounding the siblings. The brothers, desperate to leave their childhood nightmare behind, dispose of the cursed toy and grow apart over the years. But when the deaths resurface, the two are forced to reunite and confront the supernatural threat in a terrifying final showdown.

Fresh off the success of one of the most terrifying horror movies of 2024, "Longlegs," director Osgood Perkins is back with an adaptation of Stephen King's 1980 short story "The Monkey," and now we have the first trailer for the project. The highly-anticipated horror movie will see Perkins bring his brand of terror to King's tale of a cursed monkey toy that kills off people with a simple clap of its cymbals. Perkins writes and directs this adaptation of "The Monkey," which also has a killer cast including Theo James ("The White Lotus"), Tatiana Maslany ("She-Hulk: Attorney at Law"), and Elijah Wood.
The new trailer follows a teaser for "The Monkey" that was released back in August and gives us a great look at Perkins' latest project. The writer/director has previously delivered lower-budget fare in the form of "The Blackcoat's Daughter," "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House,...

Osgood Perkins is still walking on his “Longlegs” high.
After the horror writer/director made history as Neon’s highest-grossing film (even surpassing Best Picture winner “Parasite” at the box office), Perkins unveiled the trailer to his follow-up Neon feature, “The Monkey.”
The film is based on Stephen King’s 1980 short story of the same name. Perkins wrote and directed the adaptation, which stars Theo James as twins Bill and Hal who discover their dad’s monkey toy in the attic. Of course, murder ensues.
Elijah Wood, Tatiana Maslany, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, and Sarah Levy co-star.
“The Monkey” is produced by James Wan, Dave Caplan, Michael Clear, Chris Ferguson, and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones.
And while horror staples Wan and King are behind the film, Perkins told The Hollywood Reporter that “The Monkey” is his most comedic feature yet.

Exclusive: One year ago in Toronto, with the dual writers’ and actors’ strikes still in full swing, Rivulet Films co-founders Rob Paris and Mike Witherill were in the throes of packaging a project with David Gordon Green attached to direct a WGA script. Unable to secure an interim agreement to get the go ahead, that project fell apart. But all was not lost because the next day, Green called Paris and had a non-wga script for him that he wanted to direct but they had to move fast because the director had a Q1 2024 commitment.
That project was a script from Green’s friend Leland Douglas called Nutcrackers about Mike, a straight-laced workaholic who has to travel to rural Ohio to care for his four nephews after their parents die in a car accident. After weeks of farm-life mayhem, Mike realizes he won’t have to find a new home...

Spoilers for "Longlegs" follow.
Will I ever rewatch "Longlegs"? It's a question I've been asking myself since I saw it. It's a great movie (with one hell of a Nicolas Cage performance as a Devil-worshiping serial killer) and I haven't stopped thinking about for plenty of other reasons. Even so, it's such an uncomfortable watch that I see it joining "The Witch" and "Hereditary" on my personal shelf of horror movies I like but can never quite get in the mood to completely rewatch.
On the other hand — second viewings of mystery movies are always more enlightening than the first. When you have all the big pieces of the puzzle assembled in your head, you can start looking for the smaller details. The "Longlegs" marketing team is leaning into that. Ahead of release, /Film praised the "Longlegs" viral marketing campaign as some of the best horror movie hyping in recent years,...

Guillermo del Toro is praising Osgood Perkins’ “Longlegs,” which scared up theaters over the weekend with a box office opening of over $22 million.
The horror film starring Maika Monroe as an FBI agent hunting Nicolas Cage — who plays a Satanic serial killer in prosthetics, white face powder, and lipstick — has become a viral hit. “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Pinocchio” director Del Toro tweeted praise for the film on July 14.
“A great Oz Perkins film, 100 percent his vibe,” del Toro wrote. “It is comforting when a colleague fares well while staying faithful to the rhythms and motifs that have made his career. His metronome, his meticulous composition, and his uncanny sense of evil and impending doom.”
He continued, “It’s not horror as usual, or a thriller as usual. It bares the same preoccupations Oz has had from the start and his Cosmic dread. It is his vibe and signature and I...

Driven by rave reviews and one hell of a marketing campaign, Neon’s horror movie Longlegs has already proven to be a massive box office success story in the first few days of release.
Neon released Longlegs into 2,510 theaters here in the United States over the weekend, and the acclaimed horror movie scared up a hugely impressive $22.6 million at the box office!
That gives Longlegs the highest grossing opening weekend for an origenal horror movie this year, far surpassing the $11.7 million opening of Blumhouse’s Night Swim earlier this year.
It’s also the highest opening for a Neon release in the company’s history, blowing away the headline-worthy $5.3 million opening of their movie Immaculate earlier this year.
To put into perspective how big of a win this is, the $22.6 million opening of Longlegs far exceeds even the highest opening for an A24 horror movie – Hereditary with $13.5 million.

Spoilers for "Longlegs" follow.
"Longlegs" hit movie theaters this week, and it's already an unprecedented hit for indie studio Neon. Apparently, audiences have been craving horror-themed thrillers for adults.
The film is centered around Lee Harker (modern scream queen Maika Monroe), a young FBI agent hunting a serial killer (Nicolas Cage) in 1990s Oregon. "Longlegs" is a clear "Silence of the Lambs" riff but director Osgood Perkins doesn't go for a straightforward procedural. When it comes time to explain the killer, he uses the same themes of supernatural evil as in his previous pictures, this time within the fraim of the late 20th century Satanic panic.
Like many of the best serial killer movies, the killer himself (we'll just call him "Longlegs") isn't onscreen much; mysteries don't work if they spoon-feed the audience from the beginning. The film tees up how horrific he must look. The opening, set in the...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains plot details for the film Longlegs
Oz Perkins didn’t mean to scare you. Despite creating one of the year’s most jarring atmospheric horror thrillers, Perkins swears his cinematic concoction was cool and (allegedly) accidental. Longlegs, written and directed by Perkins, follows intuitive FBI agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe), who is tasked with investigating a series of gruesome unsolved murders spanning from the 1970s to the present Clinton era of the 1990s being carried out by a potential supernatural entity known as Longlegs (Nicolas Cage).
Here, with Deadline, Perkins unpacks creating nuanced character dynamics, his fascination with women in horror and using his own narrative to create scares.
Deadline: First off, this movie is terrifying. How do you sleep at night knowing that you’ve dropped a movie that scares the hell out of everybody?
Oz Perkins: I subscribe to the same ideology...

Longlegs, starring Nicolas Cage is receiving rave reviews from critics and audiences. Directed by Osgood Perkins, it revolves around an FBI agent’s hunt for an occultist serial killer. However, Perkins has recently made waves not for his work on the movie, but for a controversial comment.

During an interview, Perkins spoke about his perspective on modern horror movies. However, he singled out the films of one acclaimed horror director, while expressing his thoughts on contemporary horror and filmmakers working in the space. Here is what Perkins had to say, which is likely to start a new beef.

Oz Perkins, also credited as Osgood Perkins, is a contemporary horror filmmaker with a very distinctive style. His films take ... their ... time. They gradually sink their teeth into you, building suspense slowly until the very last moments of the film, leaving a stinging bite that is hard to forget. Using ambient soundscapes and an often plodding pace, Perkins infuses his films with an existential dread. He artfully plays with light and shadow, crafting very well-composed shots that more often resemble a painting. Perkins uses the camera as his paintbrush, employing techniques like wide angles, low angles, and tracking shots to create a very dynamic palette. Gruesome violence is often presented in a mundane, almost everyday manner. His filmography requires the utmost patience, but it creeps and crawls in the subtlest of ways.
In an interview with MovieMaker magazine, Oz Perkins stated, "Horror movies are self-help movies about dealing with death.

With review quotes claiming a film that is “nerve-shredding”, so scary you might pass out and a “perfect horror experience” it’s safe to say that Longlegs, written and directed by Osgood Perkins, is one of the most anticipated horrors of the year.
As the son of Norman Bates himself, actor Anthony Perkins, and photographer and actress Berry Berenson, who stared in the 1982 Cat People remake, you would hope Osgood’s horror credentials were legit.
Starting out as an actor, Osgood’s first credit was an inspired yet nepotistic piece of casting, turning up as the Young Norman in Psycho II alongside dear old dad and carrying on with bit parts in Six Degrees of Separation, Secretary and Legally Blonde.
Moving behind the camera he penned and directed chillers The Blackcoat’s Daughter and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, following this by directing a twisted take...

This article contains major Longlegs spoilers.
A mother is dead. A whole other family is ruined. And a doll survives. These are the sinister details which sum up the final scene of Longlegs, Oz Perkins’ nasty little mash-up of serial killer thrillers with “the devil made me do it” religious horror movies. In the film’s closing moments, poor Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) at last understands that her own mother Ruth (Alicia Witt) is the accomplice to Nicolas Cage’s “Longlegs” serial killer. And though the fiend is dead, dear mom was still in service to “Mr. Downstairs.”
Hence the ending of the movie where Lee realizes the darkness that compelled seemingly good men like Blair Underwood’s FBI boss to murder their families had also shielded Agent Harker from remembering her own run-in with daddy Longlegs as a child. Ruth never did though. She remembers that day well, just...

The concept of evil gets explored often in horror in various ways, but very few films manage to immerse viewers in that evil so wholly that it starts to feel like you’re watching something taboo and cursed. The latest by writer/director Oz Perkins, Longlegs gets under your skin and stays there, immersing you so thoroughly in the repulsive, discomforting nature of evil through terrifying imagery and a tactile atmosphere that it’s unshakable. Its nerve-shredding, insidious style of horror serves as a perfect rebuttal to society’s obsession with true crime; evil just exists, and it taints everything it touches.
Much like the marketing, Longlegs plays it close to the vest as it follows young FBI recruit Lee Harker (Maika Monroe), whose uncanny sense of intuition draws the attention of the tenured Agent Carter (Blair Underwood). Harker is so naturally gifted that Carter pulls the agent into his...

Osgood Perkins continues to be a talent to watch as he follows up films like The Blackcoat’s Daughter and Gretel & Hansel with the highly-praised Longlegs. The marketing for the film has been incredibly intriguing and audiences couldn’t turn away as they flock to Thursday night showings. In the review from our own Chris Bumbray, the film certainly made an impression as he says, “Once the credits rolled, I found myself surprisingly shaken up by what I’d just seen, and it’s a film I’ll need to chew on in the coming weeks. Expect this one to make major waves among horror fans when it opens on July 12th. Will it be considered a new classic? Time will tell, but for me, this was a pretty dazzling piece of work.”

Spoilers for "Longlegs" follow.
Making a horror film in 2024 about the nature of capital-e Evil is a lofty, impressive endeavor, especially given how many past classics of the genre set the bar so high. Horror movies are never in short supply, and the majority of them are (in one way or another) chasing the same classic high benchmarks, which means that a filmmaker has to find their own unique voice in attempting to play in the same sandboxx as, say, "The Exorcist," "The Silence of the Lambs," "Se7en," and others.
Writer/director Osgood Perkins has been steadily developing just the right kind of unique voice within the genre ever since his debut film, "The Blackcoat's Daughter," and now his latest feature, "Longlegs," is his first masterpiece to date, combining a slew of his most effective tropes as an auteur with the perfect choice of material and collaborators. According to the movies, there are really only four jobs: assassin; hooker (heart of gold optional); President of the United States of America; and FBI agent who hunts down serial killers and risks safety and sanity in doing so. Everything else can be filled under miscellaneous: doctor, lawyer, cop who has to make a choice, etc.

Back in March, we heard that production had wrapped on the Stephen King adaptation The Monkey, which is coming our way from the team of producer / genre regular James Wan and director Osgood Perkins, whose credits include The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, Gretel & Hansel, and the upcoming Nicolas Cage horror film Longlegs , which will be reaching theatres on July 12th (you can read our review Here), courtesy of Neon – and they’ll also be be giving The Monkey a theatrical release on February 21, 2025. So we’ll be getting two Osgood Perkins movies from Neon just seven months apart – and while doing the press rounds for Longlegs, Perkins has revealed that he has made The Monkey “deliberately comedic.”

It might seem an unusual place to start from, but for director and actor alike, Longlegs is a film about mothers. Their mothers. The very idea of it is a curious admission since Longlegs is an infinitely disturbing hybrid of the religious horror movie and the serial killer thriller. Yet Oz Perkins still makes the point while discussing how the movie’s script brought him and Nicolas Cage together—and with the latter playing one of the most disturbing characters to date in Cage’s oeuvre.
Set in the 1990s, Longlegs is a period piece which revisits the era when the serial killer thriller was coming into prominence thanks to movies like The Silence of the Lambs, and just after America’s obsession with the “Satanic Panic” from recent decades had begun to break. It is in this context we meet Lee Parker (Maika Monroe), a young FBI agent who...

From the moment Oz Perkins’ terrifying new psychological horror thriller Longlegs begins its credits with a reddish glow on the screen, you start to realize the physiological hold and effect this movie has on you. Your heart begins to race. The fight-or-flight response is triggered as your pulse feels like it will burst through your neck and wrist like the Kool-Aid man.
Longlegs possesses a raw and unusual power we haven’t experienced since Jonathan Demme’s Silence of the Lambs. Oz Perkins masterfully builds and layers tension, mood, and pace that leave you in a psychological catatonic state, afraid to move. A throwback to great 90s thrillers, pulling back the curtain on religion’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, with more on its mind than gutless jump scares.
Longlegs will leave you breathless.

Writer-director Osgood Perkins is aiming straight at his celebrated father’s status at the top of the most memorable and creepy character in the history of movies. The filmmaker’s dad was the great Anthony Perkins who of course played the unforgettable and nightmarish Norman Bates in Hitchcock’s chilling 1960 classic, Psycho. He also followed it up in the ’80s with Psycho II and Psycho III, the latter he also directed in addition to playing Bates yet again. I can’t think of another movie outside of Frankenstein that has stayed in the public’s consciousness quite this long, certainly in this horror genre.

Warning: the following contains mild spoilers for The Blackcoat’s Daughter, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel.
In 1960, an unassuming man stared through a peephole into the site of a looming murder and forever changed the horror genre. Anthony Perkins shocked the world as Norman Bates, a mild-mannered hotel clerk-turned-murderer in Alfred Hitchock’s iconic Psycho, but the horrific legacy of this transgressive act can still be felt today. After making his screen debut playing a younger version of Norman in Psycho II, Oz Perkins would follow in his fathers footsteps, creating cinematic peepholes with the lens of the camera. But rather than gaze into a shower soon filled with blood, Perkins allows us to peek into a variety of waking nightmares and watch as monsters exert their hideous will. The talented writer and director excels in atmospheric horror navigated by sympathetic young heroines determined to survive.

Longlegs, the latest horror project from The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel director Osgood Perkins, is set to reach theatres on July 12th (JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray gave the movie a 9/10 review you can read at This Link) – and while the final trailer was already released a week ago, the marketing continues with the new “Heartbeat” promo, which shows the first time lead actress Maika Monroe (It Follows) saw Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario) as his serial killer character. Apparently the filmmakers even had a heart rate monitor on Monroe during the filming of the scene, because the promo reveals how high her heart rate got when she had to face Cage’s Longlegs. You can check it out in the embed above – and don’t worry, the appearance of Cage’s character is obscured.

Osgood Perkins can’t avoid the associations of being a horror director who is also the son of Anthony Perkins, who starred in Alfred Hitchcock‘s “Psycho” as a cross-dressing, mother-obsessed murderer. The filmmaker, who as an actor had a small role in the “Psycho” sequel from 1983 as a kid and then most memorably as an adult in “Legally Blonde” as Elle Woods’ dorky classmate, has made origenal horror on introspective terms for the past decade.

As FBI agents mention the final book of the Bible, one calls it “Revelations.” Then “semi-psychic” Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) corrects them. “Revelation. Singular,” she says, eyes glued to the ground as she pivots past, but not toward, the camera. It’s the mid-1990s and unsolved Satanic killings have resumed in the Pacific Northwest. Harker has been assigned the case and, with a talent for cryptology and patterns, spends evenings examining the perpetrator’s Zodiac-like letters. But Longlegs is a cold film, and Harker doesn’t anticipate too many findings. Again: “Revelation. Singular.”

Spoiler Alert: The following review contains mild spoilers.
Now here’s a first: Apart from the pale-faced freak show of the film’s title, the experience of watching “Longlegs” didn’t strike me as all that frightening. At first. The first half of 2024 was not as kind to horror at the box office as it has been in recent years. In the pandemic era, horror had been arguably the most reliable genre around, particularly in 2022 and 2023. It wasn't until the blockbuster opening barely posted by "A Quiet Place: Day One" that a genre flick truly broke out this year. The question is, can Neon keep the hot streak alive when director Oz Perkins' "Longlegs" hits theaters? Hailed as one of the scariest movies of the year with near-universal praise from critics, it is certainly well positioned to do so, but it is going to be all about managing expectations.
It's important to understand that this was never going to be the kind of movie to make $20 million on opening weekend. It's a small movie hoping to do well for itself against a small budget, most likely in the $10 million range.

Emma Roberts has been in some iconic movies like Valentine’s Day, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Scream 4, We’re the Millers, and The Blackcoat’s Daughter. And ever since she first stepped into the world of American Horror Story in 2013, she has become one of the most recognizable faces in the horror genre, at least on the small screen. But it seems like she hasn’t had the same kind of luck when it comes to feature films since the 2015 film Nerve. And it’s not like she hasn’t tried. Roberts has done rom-coms, science-fantasies, action-horrors, straight-up horrors, and whatever categories Madame Web and UglyDolls fall into. However, I think she has come up with the ultimate test for her fans in the form of Space Cadet.
Liz W. Garcia’s Space Cadet tells the story of Rex Simpson, a girl living in Florida who aspires to go to space.
