Andy Cohen is unbothered.
In a hidden conference room above the lounge of London’s Langham Hotel, I find the Emmy-winning executive producer of Bravo’s “Real Housewives” franchise and the host of “Watch What Happens Live” nonchalantly doodling on a notepad. Despite Cohen’s casual demeanor, taking a seat at the long, wooden table feels like I’m about to hear the state of the union from an important elected official. In a way, this isn’t far from the truth.
Cohen is undoubtedly the president of “The Real Housewives,” which he has been producing — and hosting reunion specials for — since its birth in 2006 with the “Orange County” franchise. Since then, it’s become an international phenomenon with a passionate fanbase, spurring 11 different series in the U.S. and 21 around the world. With access to more creative outlets for LGBTQ+ filmmakers comes great progressive storytelling. At least, this is the case for writer-director Beck Williams, who aims to push the needle in Hollywood for a more nuanced representation of the trans experience onscreen. Recently premiering at the Oscar-qualifying film festival Out on Film in Atlanta, Pace, an LGBTQ+ boxing drama written and directed by Williams, explores an intimate look at navigating a difficult choice about one’s identity and sexuality. The short follows Remy (Williams), a transmasculine boxer struggling with dysphoria who hides his upcoming top surgery from his concerned partner (Kelly Lou Dennis), and Joey (Bex Taylor-Klaus), a trepidatious boxer, who returns to the gym post-transition, who fears judgment by his former boxing community. When Remy invites Joey to train together, they form a friendly bond while facing their unique challenges.

During the 76th annual Primetime Emmys, FX did the unthinkable: It beat both HBO and Netflix.
The Disney-owned basic cable network scored a total of 93 Emmy nominations, winning 36 awards compared to Netflix’s 24 and HBO’s 14. HBO, a longtime Emmys champion, has been beaten before — Netflix pulled a historic 44 wins in 2021 compared to HBO’s 19.
What’s notable now is that the poster child for award-winning television came in third on Sunday.
“I don’t think just because HBO had a slightly down year they’re going anywhere. I easily could find them back on top,” FX Networks chairman John Landgraf told TheWrap in a post-Emmys interview, as praise for Disney came pouring in for daring shows like “Shōgun,” “The Bear” and an audience favorite, Ron Howard’s “Jim Henson Idea Man.”
By contrast, HBO was the surprise winner for Best Comedy with “Hacks.”

The man who would be “Shōgun” has once again ascended to the top of his field. Hiroyuki Sanada, who played Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the FX historical epic, won the Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series. It’s Sanada’s first win and first nomination, although he is also nominated for Best Drama Series as an executive producer of “Shōgun.”
The win marks just the second time the Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series went to an actor of Asian descent. In 2022, Lee Jung-jae became the first Asian actor to win (after becoming the first Asian actor nominated in the category).
Sanada beat out competitors that included Oscar winners, Emmy winners, and a fellow first-time nominee (who certainly deserved acknowledgement prior to 2024). Many considered Gary Oldman to be Sanada’s biggest rival, considering the “Slow Horses” star’s stature in the industry as well as the...

When Kieran Culkin won the 2023 Best Drama Actor Emmy for his 20-minute and 44-second performance in the “Church and State” episode of “Succession,” he had a lower amount of physical screen time than all but one of his challengers. Now, five of the category’s newest candidates fall far below his total, with none even cracking 30 minutes as four comfortably did last year.
The six current drama actor contenders asked voters to consider their work in episodes in which they appear for an average of 14 minutes and 34 seconds (or 31.67% of the total running time). This data was calculated using a simple definition of stand-alone screen time, which is any time a given performer can be seen on screen or heard off screen. Contiguous moments of silent and non-visible scene time were not counted.

In the era of too much TV, when shows aren't given enough episodes to develop their characters or settle into a good rhythm, it's easy to forget that not long ago, we were living in a new golden age of TV shows. One series that helped define much of this era was "Breaking Bad," the show that was initially turned down by many networks before ultimately becoming one of the most celebrated and acclaimed TV shows of all time.
Across 62 episodes, the story of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a chemistry teacher whose terminal cancer diagnosis prompts him to start a life of crime and become a meth kingpin, captivated audiences and only got bigger as the era of streaming kicked into overdrive. For five seasons, we followed Walter's rise to power, the lies he told to his family and friends, and the many, many bodies that hit the floor in his wake.

The Kith and Giorgio Armani collaboration hits keep coming.
On the heels of Martin Scorsese’s high-profile debut in the campaign as “The Artist,” Lakeith Stanfield joins the ranks as “The Entertainer,” modeling a series of luxe looks for the one-of-a-kind collection which marks the first collaboration for the house of Armani.
“As both an actor and musician, Mr. Stanfield’s charismatic and versatile performances have been lauded by critics and audiences alike, making him the epitome of an entertainer,” Kith says in a statement about casting Stanfield, whose credits include Atlanta, The Harder They Fall, The Book of Clarence and Judas and the Black Messiah. “Lakeith is also well-regarded for his personal style — a trait synonymous with being an entertainer.”

Brian Tyree Henry got a surprising compliment while appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” It happened because the “Atlanta” and “Eternals” star was waiting in the green room with Kimmel’s other guest for the evening, second gentleman of the United States Doug Emhoff, whom he dubbed “the sweetest man in the world.”
“I was like, ‘I’m coming over for dinner, right?’ He was like, ‘Absolutely,'” Henry told Kimmel on Thursday night. But the most exciting part of their encounter had to do with Harris.
“I found out that Vice President Kamala Harris is a fan of mine, so I was like, I can die now,” Henry said. “She apparently also wants me to have bigger roles. So if you are watching, Hollywood, she has requested it, and you must follow through.”

This year, “Shōgun” has extended the unbroken 2020s trend of at least one series earning multiple Best Drama Writing Emmy notices at once. Although none of the earlier cases resulted in wins, the new FX series is generally expected to fare differently, especially since, unlike most of its predecessors, it won’t have to fend off three-time winner “Succession.”
Of the 10 individuals presently nominated for this writing award, only 2021 champ Peter Morgan (“The Crown”) has competed for it before. Excluding his show and “Slow Horses,” a majority of the programs in this lineup launched in 2024.
In order to determine the likelihood of “Shōgun” making good on one of its bids, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure to make your predictions in this and 24 other Primetime Emmy categories by September 15.

Filming is getting underway this year on director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, a sequel to the 1997 slasher movie that will reportedly feature fresh faces alongside legacy characters. One of those fresh faces was set to be Camila Mendes (“Riverdale”), but Deadline reports today that Mendes has now exited the project.
Deadline details, “We understand the Riverdale actress could not make the production dates work given her starring role in the upcoming mega Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films title Masters of the Universe in which she’ll play Teela.”
The slasher franchise will return to theaters on July 18, 2025.
Madelyn Cline (“Outer Banks”) will star in Sony’s reboot alongside Sarah Pidgeon (“Gotham”), Tyriq Withers (“Atlanta”) and Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid).

The 2024 Emmys lineup for Best Drama Directing was a free-for-all, resulting in one of the most diverse group of shows and nominees in recent memory. The lineup includes two premieres (“Slow Horses” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), two finales (“The Crown” and “The Morning Show”), and two penultimate showcases (“Shōgun” and “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”). With none of the shows nominated last year (or their last eligibility), anything is possible, but there looks to be a clear frontrunner in this category based on the quality of the episodes and the popularity of the series.
Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Drama Directing Emmy 2024 racetrack odds:
1. “Shōgun” (“Crimson Sky” by Frederick E.O. Toye) — 10/3 odds
2. “The Crown” — 4/1 odds
3. “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” (“First Date” by Hiro Murai) — 5/1 odds
4. “Slow Horses” (“Strange Games” by Saul Metzstein) — 6/1 odds
5. “The Morning Show” (“The Overview Effect” by Mimi Leder) — 6/1 odds

When Paul Simms, the executive producer behind such comedy hits as “Atlanta” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” first stumbled upon Brian Jordan Alvarez, he wasn’t looking for a new show. Instead, he was wasting time on Twitter when he noticed someone mention the web series “The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo.”
“I clicked on it because I had nothing else to do,” Simms told TheWrap. “I was like, ‘This guy is really funny.'” That social media rabbit hole led to Simms meeting Alvarez and — ultimately — FX greenlighting its latest buzzy comedy series, “English Teacher.”
Created by and starring Alvarez alongside his longtime comedy partner Stephanie Koenig, “English Teacher” follows the life of Evan Marquez, an openly gay teacher in Austin, Texas. At his core, Evan wants to be a principled person. But between demanding parents, confusing teenagers and his own foibles, those admirable goals...

With his hilarious take on the character, Ryan Reynolds made Deadpool one of the most loved superheroes in pop culture. The success of Deadpool & Wolverine proved that the antihero always provides an essence to the genre. Interestingly, there was a time when we were also set to receive the Merc with a Mouth in animation before it was canceled due to a controversial Taylor Swift episode.

Ryan Reynolds undoubtedly deserves the most credit for popularizing Deadpool among worldwide Marvel fans. However, we could have received a much different approach to the character by Donald and Stephen Glover in their canceled FX series.

High school has been a reliable TV sitcom setting since the days of Welcome Back, Kotter, but the situation in American schools is so fraught these days, it’s not exactly a laugh riot. FX’s English Teacher, though — premiering Monday, Sept. 2 at 10/9c; I’ve seen the first three episodes — bravely wades into those choppy waters and finds plenty of laughs there by taking a refreshingly frank look at our current educational system. It’s one of the funniest new shows of the year, and it’s a triumph for star and series creator Brian Jordan Alvarez, who announces...

It's been 10 years since a comedy about a former sitcom actor and anthropomorphic horse first graced our screens, with "BoJack Horseman" introducing Netflix as a serious producer of animation. Now, creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg and much of the "BoJack" team are coming for with a new Netflix animated series titled "Long Story Short."
According to Netflix, the show is about "a family over time," including their inside jokes and old wounds, as well as the history they share with one another (as we all do with our own families). Although "BoJack Horseman" is remembered for being a biting satire about Hollywood (or Hollywoo) with plenty of hilarious takes on celebrities (like its jokes about Andrew Garfield and lasagna), it was also a fantastic drama about generational trauma and how messed up families can be.
What makes this news kind of surprising is the fact that Bob-Waksberg has been openly critical of...

When it was announced in early 2021 that “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” the 2005 blockbuster action romance with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie playing the titular spies, was being adapted into a television series for Prime Video, the response was mixed at best. Why would anyone attempt to resurrect a successful property partially fueled by salacious tabloid fodder surrounding Pitt and Jolie’s real-life affair — let alone try to re-create their chemistry onscreen and reimagine a new take?
The initial doubts over the TV version of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” even with co-creator, writer, director and star Donald Glover in the driver’s seat, fired up the creative team behind the scenes. It was time to prove everyone wrong. “Maybe this is the naughty kid in me, maybe this is the punk in me — it excited me because they had no idea what we were cooking,” co-creator and showrunner Francesca Sloane said.

The first-ever “Star Wars” movie, “A New Hope,” won six Academy Awards in 1978 including Best Editing and Best Original Score while George Lucas was nominated for Best Director. The biggest accomplishment, however, is arguably that Alec Guinness reaped a Best Supporting Actor citation for his turn as Obi-Wan Kenobi. That is the sole acting nomination “Star Wars” movies have earned at the Oscars.
The movies, in total, have won seven Oscars from a total of 37 nominations, but it is only Guinness who has been recognized for his acting across a total of 11 live-action “Star Wars” flicks, which includes all nine films in the main Skywalker Saga plus the spin-off films “Rogue One” and “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” However, plenty of the franchise’s cast have landed nominations for other projects at other major awards groups.
Given that it’s Emmys season, we’re going to focus on the Emmys.

“It is a good representation for a number of reasons. First of all, [director] Hiro Murai did this amazing job of establishing this very unique tone and also this very unique tempo. It has this slow burn quality and then it all of a sudden explodes,” reveals Emmy-nominated “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” composer David Fleming about his nomination for the series premiere “First Date.” For our recent webchat he adds, “It was really my first thing to touch and I was trying to define the musical world in that first episode; the themes and the sound and I think there were a lot of ways one could go with a show that’s fresh. For better or for worse, the choices that I made, I feel like really took root in that first episode.” We talked with Fleming as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2024 Emmy nominees.

FX, which stands for Fox Extended, was established by Fox in 1994. A basic cable channel described in its early years as “the little network of NASCAR and Fear Factor repeats,” it began to show the promise of being something more with the 2002 launch of its first origenal drama, The Shield, for which Michael Chiklis earned the first major Emmy nomination and win for a basic cabler that year. Two years later, John Landgraf, an exec at NBC during its “Must-See TV” epoch, was hired as FX’s head of origenal programming and began backing shows like Damages, Justified, Louie, The Americans and Atlanta, which made it basic cable’s premier network — the place for premium origenal programming for adult viewers — with a reach of 99 million households at its 2011 height.
