Sour Grapes (1998)
Highly Underrated!
I really don't know whats wrong with people. Movies that really suck and are devoid of any humor are considered funny and movies that are genuinely funny get a 5.2 rating? So this movie isn't exactly supposed to be intelligent or thought provoking or even too subtle for that matter but what it does is make you laugh. Not just slight chuckles but laugh till your stomach hurts.
The lead characters also do a pretty good job. The guy who wins the million dollars has a dialogue delivery style very similar to Norm McDonald (which is a good thing). It has this underlying sarcastic tone that makes almost anything he says funny. Like the Seinfeld series this movie too isn't about a real plot or anything but its amazing how creative people can be making you laugh with some of the silliest gags ever. After watching this film I felt light-headed. Almost anything seemed to amuse me after that. All day I had this annoying grin on my face with sudden outbursts of laughter just thinking about the movie. I know a good/funny movie when I see one. This one is genuinely funny. Try not to look for meaning or depth in it and you'll love it. Take my word for it. Its well worth your time.
The Others (2001)
Thrilling
This movie gets off to a slow start and builds up gradually which leads to a very thrilling and exciting climax.
Watching the movie reminded me of a Math problem who's solution I couldn't get and once the answer was revealed I couldn't believe I didn't see it all along :).
Nicely done, good acting and some pretty scary moments, enough to keep you on the edge of your seats all along. Definitely worth a look.
Barton Fink (1991)
The most overrated movie ever. (after maybe Titanic and Gladiator)
I had heard a bit about this movie (mostly good things). It had a farely high rating on here as well so I decided to watch it. Before I go on about the movie, I'll tell you a little about myself.
I'm a farely patient guy who loves watching movies (all types). Liked most of the other Cohen borthers' movies (Fargo, Big Lebowski and Raising Arizona) but I could barely watch this film. Its one of THE MOST OVERRATED MOVIES EVER. I don't believe it won the Golden Palm that year. (I don't have any respect for the Oscars so am not including the Oscar nominations it received). I mean HOW BAD were the rest of the movies that year anyway???
It makes me sick that movies like this are classified as comedies. How boring is you're life if you find humor in stuff like this. So maybe its this very deep movie and it reveals a dark side of Hollywood, with a whole bunch of hidden metaphors and insider jokes, blah, blah, blah. But who are we trying to fool over here??? I've seen my share of films and know a good movie when I see one. I don't need to have some pseudo-intellectuial wanabe tell me how good or deep they thought the film was. Watching it reminded me of "The Emperor's New Clothes" where if you couldn't see the clothes you were considered stupid. Is that why this movie has such a high rating?? Cause people are too scared to admit it was a bad movie for fear of looking stupid??? If this makes you think I'm probably too young (I'm 22) to understand and appretiate a movie like this, so be it. But I'll never admit (no matter how old I get) that there was an iota of humor in that film. A COMPLETE WASTE of time.
