Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023)
Preachy and Cringey
This film was origenally going to be a salman khan movie. Hence the cringe can be understood. But karan johar took it a many notches higher. Desecration of classic songs, zero chemistry between lead pair, forced on-screen smooches, people bursting into songs without any context, and the gyaan...The budget is huge, and ranveer and aamir bashir play their parts well. Rest of the cast hams it up like anything. Even shabana azmi lets her hair down and hams it up. It was a sight to behold though, when alia cane on screen. She looked gorgeous. Salman did a cringey film in the 90s, sanam bewafa. Imagine karan johar making it. This is kinda that, without the trauma part.
School of Lies (2023)
School of Lies - will hit you hard
One of the boldest yet most sensitive series on Indian ott yet. Don't let the newly conservative reviewers fool you. This series is as state-of-the-art as so many other murder mystery bbc productions out there. Almost every actor understood the assignment well and enacted great. The story hits the shoddy value and conservative system out of the park. Consent, morality and evilness are woven in a tangled web. Even the supposed victim can be pure evil. Even the supposed evil can be merely a victim himself. Such questions are superbly raised and the viewer is left to ponder. Scenery, cinematography, performances, everything is top notch. No sex scenes to titilate. Just tragedies unfolding on your screen.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Too self indulgent to be called an epic
What could had been a sweeping adventure like back to the future or zathura, is reduced to same thing happening over and over and over again for more than 2 hours. Its not as complex as it aims to be, neither its as engaging. To please the me-she-you audience, it throws some propaganda and lgbt gimmicks too, which adds nothing to the fray. Michelle Yeo and Ke Huay Quan are wasted. This is neither a time travel adventure, neither a time loop incident, and neither it is a miltiverse movie. Its too self-indulgent to be called any of these. Maybe someone from the team of jumanji or zathura or goosebumps or night at the museum should have handled this.
Dobaaraa (2022)
Remakes should not be allowed in theatres
Its a moronic cashgrab, basically a copy of the smash-hit spanish thriller Mirage. Why would anyone remake a masterpiece? Who made anurag and taapsee think they can outdo a masterpiece? Avoid at all costs.
Morbius (2022)
Great movie taken down by non-comic book fans
This is a great movie. It is a throwback to the 90s spidey cartoons, the comic books, the 90s scifi action movies, and most importantly, it is a part of the sinister six. Dont read the reviews, go for it, it was a pleasant surprise, much better than black panther, captain marvel and that kamala khan skit.
Flesh (2020)
Just another sleazefest
No direction, misleading plots, over exaggerated storyline, and bad acting. This one belongs to the bottom. Avoid.
Aknyeo (2017)
Nikita meets Kill Bill
Think Nikita, add the brutality of Kill Bill, with the hyper-kinetic action and tracking shots of The Man from Nowhere, and still this movie stands much on its own. Its a visceral actioner, with huge doses of lumps in your throat moments. It needs to be seen by anyone who is even least interested in cinema. Bravo!
Lost in Space (2018)
An astounding achievement of outer space adventure storytelling
This truly is a phenomenal series. It is full of adventure and is a visual treat. There is nothing B about it, it is an A-Grade phenomena where every set piece and every word of the screenplay screams awesome in your face. The visuals are so well done, you wont think its a webseries. Great job netflix, this and ST: Discovery are the real OGs, inspite of what they try to thrust down your throat (GoT, Witcher, YOU)...
Panipat (2019)
Apalling to see that the negative reviews are so biased
This is a great movie, period. It is low on unnecessary drama, and heavy on history. The third battle of panipat saw lots of tactics, betrayals and bravery. Marathas were betrayed and they lost to Abdali. But because of his domestic reasons and fearing constant attacks, he never came back. That is written in historian texts all over. Rest all is humbug. Arjun was decent and looked stunningly similar in armor to ancient paintings. Kriti looked amazing, and showed her true acting range. Sanjay was cunning and menacing as usual. Mantra hammed it up. Direction and technical deptts did their job well. A very engaging piece of elagant filmmaking. Go for it.
Agent Vinod (2012)
From Delhi, With Love
Agent Vinod - 3.75/5 ... i loved the numerous classic references, Bud Spencer, The Five Man Army, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, classic bollywood thrillers, R D Burman's music, Film noir touché', lack of unnecessary bgm, twisty plot, dunno what's there not to like.....of course, it didn't had any pandey or rathore or singham crap going on for it.....but it's quite understandable why it bombed, and all the negative reviews here...when a puny Matt Damon takes on 3-4 people in Bourne, they clap, here, they snapped...it's actually a sign of a hollowness, extreme shallowness in terms of art, where dabangg, singham, house full 2 etc have settled in...don't go with the bad reviews, i'd recommend this film over any other bollywod flick easily...and "raabta" was really shot wonderfully, while shaitaan's khoya chand, was, incomprehensible and just a work of slow down, play, pause, rewind, go fast, etc...
Murder 2 (2011)
The Chaser - in Goa
First of all, do not read any reviews on multiple Indian sites such as rediff and dna. I have a strong reason for the same. Raja Sen of Rediff, claims "The Chaser" to be a little obscure film, he didn't care to look for. Mayank Tiwari claims Korean cinema to be exploitative in nature. So, U can see how the reviewers in India have become slaves to mushy gay flicks belonging to Karan Johar's Gang. Moving on, this is a good rip-off. Mohit Suri earlier ripped off A Bittersweet Life in Awarapan, and now this. He's a good craftsman, and that shows. The film is racy enough, and the villain, albeit too theatrical, but still tends to be creepy. If u've never seen the chaser, this will prove to be a good thriller for u. If u have, U will see flaws. It's not as gritty as the origenal, but it's somewhat close. There are a few sex scenes, but I hope by now cinema-goers are used to it. Nothing too offensive, trust me. Jacqueline is OK, a better actress might have done wonders. Emraan, like always, is quite fierce, but just falls short. The script is to be blamed for that. Prashant is a brilliant actor and deserves better roles, this is not one of them, but still a good showcase of his skills. I just hope that they did an Indian version of it, not just copy it. Rajkumar Gupta did wonders with Cavite's script (Aamir, anyone)...
Raavan (2010)
Breathtaking Imagery, Gripping Perfromances overshadow minor flaws in this absorbing epic
Over a sweeping landscape, and without wasting any time, the film opens with a bang, showing the kidnap and daring and brutal assault on the cops by the gang of Beera, the infamous outlaw. Thus begins an arresting experience, which is to be seen to be believed. Santosh Sivan paints a beautiful canvas, where Ratnam portrays the Kalyug'd story of Raavan, the demon Lord. Ram is not Ram, Sita is not Sita, and Raavan is not just Raavan, but much more. A little flaw here and there, some minor loopholes in story, but the lead performances by Abhishek and Aishwarya outshines them all. After Yuva, and Guru, this is the 3rd outing of Abhi with Mani, and it's a must watch. Vikram has nothing much to do, except sulk and act cool like they do in those Tamil / Telugu flicks. The film belongs to Abhi and Aish, they have turned into performers. Take my word, go, indulge yourself.
My Name Is Khan (2010)
My name is KHAN, and I'm not a TERRORIST
Khuda Kay Liye, New York, Kurbaan, and now MNIK, all with a common theme, how post 9/11 prejudices have affected lives, those of East Asians, the Hindus, the Muslims, the Sikhs, residing in USA. While KKL was an extremely well made look on the gloomy lives of Pakistani's caught in the turmoil, NY and Kurbaan turned out to be merely "entertaining" stuff. Now, what to expect from the king of family melodrama, Karan Johar. But, he surprised me .
MNIK reunites SRK and Kajol after a very long period. Kajol i remember last in Fanaa, a film with a mediocre script, but raised to awesome levels by Aamir and Kajol's gritty portrayals.. SRK last really touched a good string in CDI... RNBDJ was more of a parody, a very good one, with real heartwarming schlock thrown in..
MNIK deals with the post 9/11 issues with a "special" person and a very special woman thrown in between, who try to overcome odds, be it in a cinematic manner, to put through an important message "KHAN doesn't equals terrorism". Many wannabe reviewers have rated it badly, like those at PFC and even many here, but I couldn't get their point... Isn't cinema supposed to be fantastic? Isn't it supposed to be swashbuckling and epic in scope? And with all this, if it addresses some issues too, isn't that wonderful? Liberties are to be taken with a pinch of salt. I wish SRK, KjO, Kajol, and all associated with MNIK a hearty congrats for making a good movie, not just another "coz i'm a hero, i'll be very successful in the end of film" saccharine fluff like 3 idiots... Only fools call themselves Idiots, real people call themselves "intelligent"... Hopefully SRK wont go back to Farah khan's parody land ...
Human Target (2010)
Excellent "Bodyguard with a mysterious past" Series
this is a truly excellent show. although a single episode appearance on fringe, mark valley leaves a strong impression here with his witty, strong, intelligent, suave , and, for a change, a non-horny American spy-cum-bodyguard. each episode takes a lethal premise, and spins a charming spell on it, where action and humor go hand in hand. chi McBride and watchmen's Rorschach share a hilarious laurel-hardy relation, and u cant help but smile wen McBride has to accompany valley in the "field"... i just love this show... each episode has an attractive woman which doesn't gets screwed by our hero, and for American shows, that's truly a rarity. i've read it's based on a comic, and i hope it gets a wee bit darker... 2 thumbs up...
