Topic: Implementation of GOES-R Ground System Processing Software Update PR.10.07.00 scheduled on or about April 11, 2022, Issued: April 05, 2022 2117 UTC
Date/Time Issued: April 05, 2022 2117 UTC
Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES-16 and GOES-17 Land Surface Albedo (LSA) and Bidirectional Reflectance Factor (BRF) Products
Date/Time of Initial Impact: On or about April 11, 2022 TBD UTC
Length of Impact: ~ 10 days
Details/Specifics of Change: PR.10.07.00 is being deployed to fix a defect known to cause a significant reduction in coverage of the LSA products across the transition from one calendar year to the next. Following the deployment of the PR.10.07.00 software update, the GOES-16 and GOES-17 ABI LSA and BRF products will likely be degraded for a period of up to 10 days while the database needed to construct the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) model is rebuilt. The BRDF is essential in the production of good quality LSA retrievals. In terms of BRF product, the lack of a mature BRDF dataset during this time will not impact the retrieval of clear-sky BRF, but it will prohibit the algorithm from producing cloudy-sky BRF initially.
After 10 days, the Offline LSA algorithm should have access to a sufficient time series to produce a BRDF of similar quality and coverage as the version used prior to the planned software upgrade.
Please note: This upgrade will not be performed during Critical Weather Day (CWD).
