English: Maiolica (with an I) is a tin-glazed pottery, created in the arabian world in the 12th century B.C. that comes over with the Moors to Spain and from there to Italy. Dating from the Renaissance, the Italian maiolica reaches a high level of quality. Italian maiolica is often decorated in bright colours on a white background, much of it depicting historical and legendary scenes. During the 17th century, the English added the letter j to their alphabet[1] and maiolica was commonly anglicized to majolica.
English: Majolica (with a J) is a lead-glazed pottery that was launched to the public at the Great Exhibition, London, of 1851. New glazes had been developed by Leon Arnoux working for Minton, England, that were more durable, required fewer firings, and had exciting new colors. Classical style soon gave way to naturalistic sometimes whimsical design.
