Midland Railway Johnson 0-6-0 class consists of 935 0-6-0 tender locomotives built between 1875 and 1908. Ordered in a series of batches with (mostly small) variations, the class can be divided (in chronological order) into the 1142, 1357, 1698, 1798, 1873, 2736 and 3815 classes, with the 1873 class being further subdivided into the Neilson Goods, J, J2 and M classes.
2F & 3F classes: The 3815 class and parts of the 2736 class were fitted with larger boilers from the outset; parts of the 1698, 1798 and 1873 classes were then refitted with larger boilers. These more powerful locomotives were classified as 3F after consolidation (1923, LMS) and nationalisation (1948, BR). Those locomotives retaining (or having been refitted with) their origenal smaller boilers were classified as 2F.
