Qualifications to Run for Councillor:

  • you must be 18 years of age at the time of nomination
  • you must be a Canadian citizen
  • you must have been ordinarily resident in the Municipality of Digby for six months before nomination day (by March 9th), and continue to do so
  • you must have obtained a certificate that, as of nomination day (September 10th), the charges that are liens on your property and the taxes due to the Municipality have been fully paid or all instalments or interim payments that are due as of nomination day have been paid
  • you are not disqualified under the Municipal Elections Act

Decide which office you wish to be nominated for

Which District would you like to represent? You can live in a different district than where you are running. The boundaries for each district are outlined in the Electorical Maps section at www.digbymun.ca under the 2024 Elections tab.

Contact the Returning Officer before you start campaigning

To ensure you are following proper procedures. You can start campaigning as soon as you decide to run for office. You do not need to wait until you file your nomination papers. However, you need to appoint an official agent before you accept campaign donations, either financial or for goods and services.

Request a Nomination Package

Nomination packages will be available July 29, 2024.

Completing the Nomination Package:

  1. You will need at least 5 qualified electors (people eligible to vote) who are willing to sign your nomination paper and who are on the list of electors in the district where you are running. It is advisable to have more than 5 nominations in case one of the nominators is not qualified.
  1. The name of your official agent. The official agent prepares your campaign finance disclosure forms after the election and can act on your behalf at certain times. You can act as your own official agent
  1. Request a certificate from the Municipality showing that your property taxes due as of nomination day are paid.
  1. Schedule your nomination appointment
  1. A $200.00 nomination deposit is needed. The nomination deposit is refundable after the election if certain criteria are met.
