Old Armenian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

A Southwestern Iranian borrowing. Compare Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (mʾtgdʾn' /mādayān/, book), Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫖𐫀𐫅𐫏𐫀𐫗 (mʾdyʾn /mādayān/, book, writing). Old Georgian მატიანე (maṭiane), მატიანი (maṭiani) are from the same source, according to Ačaṙean borrowed via Armenian.
