- found: NUCMC data from Arkansas Hist. Comm. for His Papers, 1928-1931(Harvey Parnell; Arkansas governor, 1928-1933; Harvey Parnell (1880-1936) served as Governor of Arkansas from 1928-1933. He was born near Orlando, Cleveland County, Ark. Parnell was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives from Chicot County in 1919, and to the State Senate representing Chicot and Ashley counties in 1923. In Nov. 1926, he was the first elected Lieutenant Governor in Arkansas. Parnell became governor in 1928 following Governor John E. Martineau's acceptance of a federal judgeship, and the next year was elected to the first of his two terms. In 1931 Parnell appointed Hattie Caraway to fill the U.S. Senate seat of her late husband, Thaddeus Caraway. Parnell's term covered the first critical years of the Great Depression, and his administration worked with the federal government and other relief agencies to help the people of the state in agricultural, educational, and other matters relating to the economic depression)
