Niger est color obscurissimus, cum lux desit vel omnino absorpta sit; albo opponitur. Niger est color caeli nocturni; etiam cum morte, luctu, maloque saepe coniungitur. Vocabulum fere idem significans est ater. Stearn, scriptor botanicus, dicit "ater is pure black, without a trace of brown or blue" (ater/niger purus, sine vestigio fusci aut caerulei) et "niger, glistening black, perhaps a trifle rusty" (ater/niger nitidus, leviter fortasse rubiginosus).[1] Alia vocabula propinqua sunt atratus, piceus, pullus, fuligineus, furvus, ac fuscus.
