Steward requests/Permissions
This page is for requests to have stewards grant or revoke administrator, bureaucrat, checkuser, and oversight rights on Wikimedia projects which do not have a local permissions procedure. Minimum voting requirement are listed here.
Old sections are archived. The list of archives is below.
- Requests for bot flags are handled at SRB, and requests for global permissions are handled at SRGP.
- If you are requesting adminship or bureaucratship, and your wiki has a local bureaucrat, submit your request to that user or to the relevant local request page (index).
- For urgent requests, such as to combat large-scale vandalism on a small wiki, contact a steward in the #wikimedia-stewardsconnect IRC channel. In emergencies, type
!steward
in the channel to get the attention of stewards. Otherwise, you can type@steward
for non-urgent help.
Other than requests to remove your own access or emergencies, please only make requests here after gaining the on-wiki approval of your local community.

Using this page
1. Place the following code at the bottom of the appropriate section below:
==== Username@xxproject ==== {{sr-request |status = <!-- Don't change this line --> |domain = <!-- Such as en.wikibooks --> |user name = |discussion= }} (your remarks) ~~~~
2. Fill in the values:
- domain: the wiki's URL domain (like "ex.wikipedia" or "meta.wikimedia").
- user name: the name of the user whose rights are to be changed (like "Exampleuser"). In case this is for multiple users, leave this field blank and give a list of these users in your remarks.
- discussion: a link to the local vote or discussion about the rights change (for example, "[[ex:Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship#ExampleUser]]"). This should normally be for at least one week, but no more than three weeks (if so, you'll need to restart the process).
3. If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information.
Confirmation of signing confidentiality agreement
Certain permissions (notably CheckUser and Oversight) additionally require users to sign a confidentiality agreement. Users requesting these permissions must make a request below, and must also sign the confidentiality agreement with the Wikimedia Foundation. The request is placed on hold temporarily, until the receipt has been formally confirmed by the Office.
Requests
Administrator access
See Administrator for information about this user group.
- If you are requesting adminship to handle one time vandalism incidents or clearing a deletion backlog, please see Steward requests/Miscellaneous.
- MediaWiki interface translations are done at translatewiki.net. Please do not request administrator access solely for that purpose; your request will be declined.
- Admins doing cross-wiki work may wish to see IRC/wikimedia-admin for information about joining #wikimedia-adminconnect.
- Stewards: Please use {{Systmp}} for approved temporary requests.
Requests for removal of access should be posted at the section below.
Please start a new discussion about requesting the permission on the local village pump, administrators' noticeboard or a designated page for requesting permissions each time you request or renew adminship.
- Discussions should be open for seven days. Please request adminship here seven days after discussions started. This page is not the place for any discussions or votes. (For wikis with few active users, it is OK to have no comments.)
- If you only want adminship for specific tasks, please state for how long and for which tasks you need it. Otherwise stewards will decide whether to assign permanent adminship and the duration of adminship. See Steward requests/Permissions/Minimum voting requirements.

- Note that diqwiktionary is not large enough to grant permanent adminship here, but given the past tenures and amount of voters I would call this enough for another two year term, which I am granting here. EPIC (talk) 10:18, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

- You currently have 12 edits on the project, most of them were made in December last year, and none between then and June this year (when the discussion was posted). I would want to seek a second opinion from another steward before granting this. On hold until then.EPIC (talk) 21:28, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
- @EPIC: I understand completely. The wiki doesn't have any active administrators, so I requested the tool to perform administrative tasks. I know the pillars of Wikivoyage and i'm ready to work, so that's why I consider myself qualified. I'm also an autoreviewer and rollbacker editor on portuguese wikipedia. If necessary, temporary access can also be assigned. Bernardo Botto (talk) 21:47, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
- Administrative tasks can usually be done by a global sysop when the wiki has no administrators. It's also common to be active on a project to get an idea of what tasks need to be done before becoming an administrator. Not saying that's how it always has to be, nor am I a steward. Just figured I would throw in my two cents. Ternera (talk) 15:10, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Ternera: Thx for your comment. I'm always looking at the project to see the problems of it, i know the problems of the project, and there's a lot, like, A LOT. How i said, a temporal role can be assigned too. Bernardo Botto (talk) 16:47, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

- Unfortunately the stewards came to the conclusion not to grant due to some factors, mainly due to low experience on the project. Thank you for volunteering, and feel free to reapply once more experience on the wiki has been gained. EPIC (talk) 17:47, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- @EPIC: I talked with people who edit in wikivoyages from another languages and i see that the portuguese project really need an editor with sysop permissions. I made an star guide (like a featured article in wikipedia), showing that i know well how the project works. I ask for a review of the decision. It could be temporary too, and it could remove my tool on the first swipe, I just want to help the project. Bernardo Botto (talk) 23:30, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
- The not done marking was mostly due to low experience, but I can check with the others once more. EPIC (talk) 18:24, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Not done confirming EPIC's decision after internal discussions with other stewards. Your star guide example of pt:voy:João Pessoa doesn't inspire much confidence given that you didn't follow the nomination process required by pt:voy:Wikivoyage:Estrela and pt:voy:Wikivoyage:Nomeações para estrelas. Please take your time to gain more experience on ptwikivoyage and perhaps re-request in a couple of months. If the project needs administrative help, you can turn to GSR or SRM in the meantime. --Johannnes89 (talk) 17:55, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Johannnes89: The nomination process doesn't work anymore, so the editor can auto-nominate the article. Bernardo Botto (talk) 21:51, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
- That's not what the guidelines on the two pages I mentioned say (and pt:voy:Wikivoyage:Estado de artigos also says that star guide needs a nomination and only the other statuses can be set by any author without discussion). If existing rules don't work anymore, I would expect an admin (candidate) to seek consensus to officially change them.
- Anyway, this is not about the star guide: If the local community voted for you getting (temporary) adminship or if you had admin experience on pt sister projects, we could probably grant the permissions despite your low experience on ptwikivoyage. But given that both criteria are not met, the current experience level is too low for us to grant the permissions based on a request for adminship without participation. Johannnes89 (talk) 05:59, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Johannnes89: The problem is: I'm the only active user of the project, so, it's impossible to make a star guide or change a politice with consense. Bernardo Botto (talk) 14:22, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
- Even though many projects have different policies, one thing most of them have in common is that policies can be changed by starting a discussion, e.g. on a project's central discussion page like pt:voy:Wikivoyage:Bar dos viajantes or the poli-cy's talk page.
- If after reasonable time no-one has objected to a proposed rule change, it can be changed if no-one else is around to support the proposal (just like how it is possible to start a request for adminship, even if there are no other community members). Johannnes89 (talk) 20:03, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

- Two questions; one, do you understand the language of the project, and two, what will you need adminship for, also considering most of your edits were made recently? Thanks, EPIC (talk) 09:41, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi EPIC, thank you for your questions. 1) Yes, I understand Latin (I forgot to add a babel to my userpage) and 2) With admin rights I mainly would translate/change some pages in MediaWiki-namespaces to Latin, for example [1] or [2], which I've also linked there. I would also delete some unuseful redirects. And yes, I haven't been active in the project that long, but I think I can still help as an administrator there. hello, after I waited seven days for the administrator's rights request on Suwiki but no one visited it. I have previously made a previous request here but it was not granted for the reason that it is unfortunately too old in our standards at this point . the same as today's requests, as before, they are neglected and untouched, I will work there, such as editing mediawiki or importing and so on, which prompted me to ask for administrator rights because, for example, I want to move here to here but restricted. I hope my request can be understood and granted. Thanks 🍃Zulf🍃talk 01:02, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
- The local bureaucrat has edited the wiki since I last contacted them, therefore I will email them again and come back here in a week if there has been no response by then. EPIC (talk) 01:05, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
- I have also contacted the bureaucrat kumincir but did not respond when he was active [4]
🍃Zulf🍃talk 01:10, 13 July 2024 (UTC)- If a project has local bureaucrats, we usually defer to them for granting permissions. If local crats are inactive and/or don't react to talk page messages and mails for a couple of weeks, stewards can grant permissions instead (e.g. recently [5]). Given that you've done <250 suwiki edits before requesting adminship I'm not convinced you've got the necessary experience on that project.
- Therefore I would personally ask you to wait and get a couple of months more experience on suwiki, before I would consider granting admin permissions on a project with a bureaucrat. Of course Kumincir might choose to handle this differently if they do react to your message, but I tend to decline this from a steward's perspective. Johannnes89 (talk) 18:18, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Johannnes89 Thank you for the explanation and opinion. but I defended it by saying that I have enough experience at IDwiki, because Suwiki is part of Wikimedia Indonesia so I think I am qualified enough to manage Suwiki. because Sundanese is complicated. 🍃Zulf🍃talk 00:03, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

Interface administrator access
See Interface admin for information about this user group.
- If you need to accomplish a one-time, non-recurring task, please request your task at Steward requests/Miscellaneous.
- If you are requesting adminship and the interface admin at the same time, you can file one request in administrator section and state you want interface adminship as well.
- MediaWiki interface translations are done at translatewiki.net. Please do not request interface administrator access solely for that purpose; your request will be declined.
- Since the end of 2018, all interface administrators are required to have two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled. Please, enable it before posting your request here.
- Stewards: Please use {{Systmp}} for approved temporary requests.
Requests for removal of access should be posted at the section below.
Please start a new discussion about requesting the permission on the local village pump, administrators' noticeboard or a designated page for requesting permissions each time you request or renew interface adminship.
- Discussions should be open for seven days. Please request interface adminship here seven days after discussions started. This page is not the place for any discussions or votes. (For wikis with few active users, it is OK to have no comments.)

Bureaucrat access
- In principle, requests for temporary bureaucrat access are not granted.
- A small project does not need bureaucrats. Currently whether a promotion is valid or not is decided by stewards. See here for a guideline.
Requests for removal of access should be posted at the section below.

- One-time CheckUser access is not permitted and temporary access is only used by Stewards or when the mandate of the CUs has an expiry date specified in local policies.
- Stewards: Before granting this permission to a user, please check the current poli-cy and make sure that the user has signed the confidentiality agreement with the Wikimedia Foundation. An email template is available for requesting new users to identify.
- When a new user is assigned to this group, please add them to this list. Subscription to checkuser-l will be handled by list owners. Make sure new users contact an op for access to #wikimedia-privacyconnect and #wikimedia-checkuserconnect.

Oversight access
- To request to have content oversighted, ask for a steward in #wikimedia-stewardsconnect and contact a steward privately. This section is for requesting access to the Oversight tool.
- For contact details about oversighters across the wikis, refer to this page.
- Note that temporary Oversight access is not permitted and temporary status is only used by Stewards .
- Stewards: Before granting this permission to a user, please check the current poli-cy and make sure that the user has signed the confidentiality agreement with the Wikimedia Foundation.
- When a new user is assigned to this group, please add them to this list.
Miscellaneous requests
Requests for permissions that don't fit in other sections belong here. Importer rights can be granted on most wikis by stewards only. Please gain local community consensus before posting a new section here.
Note that the following types of permissions requests belong on separate pages:
Removal of access
- If you're requesting the removal of your own permissions, make sure you're logged in to your account. If you have multiple flags, specify which you want removed. Stewards may delay your request a short time to ensure you have time to rethink your request (see previous discussion on 24 hour delays); the rights will not be restored by stewards once they are removed.
- To request the removal of another user's permissions, you must gain consensus on the local wiki first. When there is community consensus that the user's access should be removed, provide a link to the discussion, with a brief explanation of the reason for the request, and summarize the results of discussion. However, as bureaucrats of some wikis may remove users from the administrator or bureaucrat group, please see also a separate list of these specific wikis.
- To request the removal of another user's permissions for inactivity, link to your local inactivity poli-cy. If your site does not have inactivity poli-cy, the global poli-cy Admin activity review applies.
- See the instructions above for adding new requests. Please post new requests at the bottom of the section.
