First, there was “Cops,” now it’s “Live PD.”

It's a new hit television series on the A&E Network that follows officers in real-time as they patrol their cities.

For three seasons, deputies with the Nye County Sheriff’s Office have been regulars on the show.

The show has no script and no re-enactments. Sheriff Sharon Wehrly says the opportunity came about at just the right time.

“Actually at the time we were having a very hard time getting recruits,” she says.

Since then, the problem has vanished. Publicity from the show has lead to at least two new hires -- recruits who liked what they saw on “Live PD.”

Kristopher Bagley is Supervising Producer on the series who says there’s a lot of great characters in Pahrump.

“The department is phenomenal,” Bagley said.

Nye County is one of eight departments the series is currently following. A camera crew videotapes some segments during the week and goes live on Friday and Saturday nights.

“Lots of adrenaline rushes,” says Bagley. “You go and go, then sit in the car, don't do anything for a little while, then it's lights and sirens and you're heart is racing as you're heading to the scene."

One example: a call from Nov. 25 of last year. A high-speed chase that began in Pahrump and ended 70 miles away in Henderson.

The car was reported stolen. “Live PD” was there as the driver and two passengers were eventually taken into custody.

“I think they do want to see the process,” says Wehrly. “I think they want to feel comfortable with that process, that we're not hiding anything.”

Wehrly says her department is under contract but is not paid for being on the show. She also has a ten-minute window to say “no” to certain events being broadcast, including calls deemed too traumatic for the victims involved.

Meanwhile, the show has even made celebrities of the deputies featured, with calls and letters coming in from around the country. The show humanizes the often-challenging work of law enforcement.

“We love the show,” says Sharlee Horvath, whose family owns the local diner “Mom’s.”

Horvath doesn’t believe the interactions broadcast have ever cast Nye County in a bad light or has been bad for business.

“It shows they're there to help and they really do care,” says Horvath.

It’s reality TV on the side of the road.

In Nye County, it's a look behind the badge for millions of viewers every week.
